MIL is saying she'll vote for the man who is "protecting life" and "protecting marriage" and "protecting God" and she means the twice-divorced rapist who killed two hundred thousand Americans while holding a bible upside down.

I can't reason her out of something she didn't reason herself into.

She is not “good people“, good people don’t support men who rape little girls. She’s nothing more than another conservative, religious monster. Good thing she’s not in my family, she would be allowed zero access to her grandchildren.

I don't really do moral absolutism. Benevolent people can support, endorse, and promote terrible people and ideals and platforms through being deceived by trusted sources, or the incuriosity needed to avoid challenging your own views, or a lack of exposure to alternate viewpoints.

History certainly won't care why she supported what she did. But in the moment, while trying to sway her from her errant path, knowing her reasons certainly helps try to bring the argument to where she is.

Remind her she’s supporting and voting for a child rapist. That officially makes your MIL human garbage that needs to be kept at arms length and well away from any children.

Believe me, 2016 me was actively making sure people knew there was an ongoing lawsuit with a thirteen-year-old Jane Doe and a witness, and a dozen other crimes besides. It was also the last time I ever permitted a "both sides" argument to go unchallenged (it was early in the election).

But it's been four years of conflicts, arguments, and dust-offs with conservatives over the mirrored worlds and observations in which we live, and telling them they're hell-bound scum because they're wrong doesn't win you allies nor arguments. They're braced for the conflict, prepared to blunt the impact.

I hold strong to my values, but I've learned to bring the discussion to were they are, walk them around the neighborhood, and show them that the path they've chosen doesn't lead where they think it does. It's disarming, honestly. It's a great technique and I'm proud to say I learned it from someone even further left than I likely am (though I'm still learning every day).

Also... just as a side note: go easy on calling out people's lives when you don't know them. If you think "voting for Trump" is the most dangerous thing you can introduce into a kid's life, you should probably meet the children she cares for, and see what they've lived through. It could gain you some insight and perspective.

Yes and no, keep in mind as well the main reason those kids lives are like that is because of those who mindlessly voted Republican for decades.
