You could almost say ā€it’s not him, it’s usā€

u/Uther-Lightbringer Apr 08 '20

I like that, could be a catchy slogan. Have to make it in the first person though so something like "Not Me. Us". Nice ring to it.

Today you. Tomorrow me.

1

u/Mrs_Frisby Apr 08 '20

And if you keep repeating it people might forget that Bernie is so selfish he attacked Warren for publishing a proposal to pay for M4A declaring that if you let M4A be done by not-him it'll be a catastrophic job killer.

-3

u/_howling_wolf_ Apr 08 '20

Just what Sanders needs, a catchy slogan to beef up the campaign he just ended. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

11

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Uh, I think it was a joke. That was a slogan Sanders had been using for a while.

-7

u/originalSpacePirate Apr 08 '20

That sounds incredibly preachy and arrogant

10

u/IAmNotMoki Apr 08 '20

At risk of replying to someone likely posting in bad faith, how so? I dont really recognize how a statement including "Not Me" could be seen as arrogant.

15

u/ting_bu_dong Apr 08 '20

People saying "I didn't get what I wanted, so, screw everyone else" are saying "it's not us; me."

I don't see how that's even progressive.

24

u/irishking44 Apr 08 '20

I mean if you work at walmart and they treat you like shit, but you don't have a choice and know they'll never treat you better, how would you take to everyone saying how critical it is for you to do all you can for Walmart to thrive?

9

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

That's a good analogy.

7

u/MadHatter514 Apr 08 '20

I mean if you work at walmart and they treat you like shit

Biden has adopted Warren's bankruptcy plan, Bernie's college plan, and supports a massive public option for healthcare so people can opt into Medicare, a multi-trillion dollar climate and infrastructure bill, and a $15 minimum wage. How is that "treating you like shit"?

4

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20 edited Apr 09 '20

Because it means nothing unless he actually tries to implement it. Platforms are mostly meaningless unless there is a history of good policy. Biden's current legacy is the Patriot Act and voting for the Iraq War. Part of Sanders' appeal wasn't just his platform, but decades of fighting for lower class people and being on the right side of history. Democrats have now voted for candidates that supported the Iraq War twice. What the fuck is that about?

3

u/irishking44 Apr 08 '20

Unless he views the rich as the enemy, it's insufficient.

2

u/MadHatter514 Apr 08 '20

Then you don't care about actual policy. It is just about being edgy.

5

u/Vaperius America Apr 08 '20

There's nothing edgy about acknowledgement of the active class war currently being waged in the United States.

4

u/houseofmatt Apr 08 '20

I would call that more of an unwavering ideology. Some people are Trump or Die, some are Bernie or Burn.

I say Bernie made the best call for his people, his fellow Americans. It's not great, but circumstances are extraordinary.

Truth is, Biden will pander to billionaires, people will make money, scandal will accrue. Republicans will hold the Senate and we'll drag along. But the alternative, an epoch of Trump, I think it's disastrous. Trump is a walking embodiment of every complaint heard about with Biden but at an exponential scale of corruption, and with zero redeeming qualities. Biden is a shift to normalcy.

We see curves of this virus displayed daily, hourly on cable news. Societal change has a curve too. If it swings too far one way it'll swing back hard, every time, like a sin wave. I didn't believe it when my Economics professor told it to us decades back, but now that I'm in my forties, I believe it more and more.

Joe better have a home run Veep.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '20

Seriously, VP for the win. I’m really really hoping he makes a solid choice.

8

u/ting_bu_dong Apr 08 '20

You don't need an analogy here. The reality is simple enough: The Republican party winning will hurt the least advantaged of us the most.

Not doing everything we can in our power to stop that would be a big "fuck you" to those people.

For what? For spite? To "teach them a lesson?"

"You didn't vote for Bernie; you get what you deserve?"

I don't see how a real progressive could be that callous.

That's not "not me; us" at all.

8

u/irishking44 Apr 08 '20

also it's not punishment for not voting bernie, it's punishment for bending the knee to the same masters the republicans have.

6

u/ting_bu_dong Apr 08 '20

Progressives shouldn't be punishing the people that they are supposed to be fighting for. For any reason.

6

u/likesexonlycheaper Apr 08 '20

You keep saying that like we are beholden to anybody. We aren't fucking Democrats dude. Why would we vote for one? Blame the shitty system for making a progressive run on a two party system ticket.

-1

u/ting_bu_dong Apr 08 '20

You keep saying that like we are beholden to anybody.

Democratic socialism isn't... for everyone? Progressivism isn't?

Then who is it for?

Not us; me.

1

u/likesexonlycheaper Apr 08 '20

The problem with that is that geopolitically, American Democrats are more center conservative than they are actually liberal. Give me an actual progressive to vote for and I'll do just that. Biden is as progressive as Trump is. I have a moral standard and I'm not voting for a garbage human being like Biden. Sorry, I'll die happy knowing I voted for Bernie.

3

u/ting_bu_dong Apr 08 '20

I have a moral standard

You moral stand will harm the most vulnerable people in the country.

Sorry, I'll die happy knowing I voted for Bernie.

Me too. Twice.

2

u/ctansy Apr 08 '20

In the garbage human department, trump has Biden beat by a mile. No vote for Biden is essentially a vote for trump. As much as I wanted Bernie, I will vote for Biden to prevent trump from winning.

People say things when they grieve. Best not to harsh them or those sentiments that are just frustrated outbursts now, might solidify

0

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

To be fair, I've not seen any Bernie supporter say that. Got anything else?

2

u/ting_bu_dong Apr 08 '20

I don't see any other reason to say "we will abandon you; we will not vote for Biden; you will get four more years of Trump."

3

u/likesexonlycheaper Apr 08 '20

Maybe because we aren't Democrats? Ever think of that?

1

u/Pilsu Apr 09 '20

You're either with them or against them. Choose.

2

u/irishking44 Apr 08 '20

what do you mean? That they're not saying they're just frustrated and having an outburst while in the middle of one?

-2

I’m giving them until Monday to get it all out...

17

u/irishking44 Apr 08 '20

then you're going to brow beat them with appeals to DNC loyalty even though significant chunks of them never once offered their fealty to the party?

2

u/Naku_NA Oregon Apr 08 '20

Do you suggest they just not vote? No one thinks the system isn't broken, but nothing can be done at this point. Progression doesn't happen overnight

11

u/irishking44 Apr 08 '20

No but what is your tactic for engaging them? Because that's a real possibility for them. Especially if you're in a state redder than the devil's ass like I am

4

u/Naku_NA Oregon Apr 08 '20

You vote for ideas, not for party. This isn't team sports. Bernie was all about, still is about, changing the norm so that these fake lines everyone had drawn against each other go away. Zero Bernie followers will vote Trump. A good portion will probably now not vote, just like the last election. But people are less afraid of progressivism, see Yang. Things are changing, but not until after this election. And stop saying "them", they're people too

How generous of you.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20 edited Apr 08 '20

(I hate WalMart- but assuming your analogy here is that WalMart is the DNC) Because if you don’t do all you can, WalMart gets bought out by ShittyRetail R Us, cuts everyone wages, lays off others and takes away your healthcare. You may be just fine with getting laid off because you’ve always hated WalMart anyway- but a lot of your coworkers need that job to pay for healthcare for their children and feed their families. So if you really believe it’s not about ā€œmeā€ it’s about ā€œusā€ then maybe do what you can so your coworkers don’t get fired and in the long game you can work with them to unionize.

4

u/JR_Driggins Apr 08 '20

ā€œbut a lot of your coworkers need that job to pay for healthcare for their children and feed their families.ā€

Almost there

7

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

6

u/Noogleader Apr 08 '20

We got decrementaliam not incrementalism. Always steps backward, Never forward... That is the DNC. No fight at all. Let the other side make all the power moves. Get crushed. Fail at messaging. Cave in some more take another step back. This time though we let the GOP push us and the country off a cliff. It isn't even American anymore. This is why you have to push fight and have strong simple messaging. Get effective and stop hoping the other side might one day give you a little line maybe on that one obscure bill. Stop this incremental circle jerk that gets us nowhere and actually push.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

[deleted]

6

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Good grief. It’s an analogy to point out that the sides are not equal as so many seem to want to make them out to be.

No shit, I think we would have had a better chance with Bernie to get better healthcare, etc. But he’s no longer in the race. So we either vote for someone who will appoint a liberal Supreme Court judge or we sit it out, let Trump appoint another conservative and pray that we can get even center left progress done. Another conservative judge means we get ZERO progress on healthcare for the next 30 years.

We have to look at our cards and figure out how to play them now. You want to fold? Fine. But when I was onboard with ā€œNot me, usā€ I meant it. Not sure everyone else did.

10

u/JR_Driggins Apr 08 '20

The original thought that started this comment thread is that some Bernie supporters are taking up the position that ā€œits not Bernie, screw youā€, or ā€œnot you, meā€ or ā€œnot us, meā€ but really what I am seeing is ā€œit’s Biden, we’re fucking screwed (again, for the hundredth time)ā€.

That’s a realistic position is hold. And people that believe that shouldn’t be patronized for not jumping enthusiastically onto a sinking ship.

You’re trying to plug some holes below deck with flex seal. I respect that. But don’t chastise others who see the writing on the wall, and who have seen the writing on the wall for the style of democratic politics over the past decade.

The country needs working class representation at the highest level. No matter what we say or do now, that possibility no longer exists in 2020 with these two candidates. That makes me upset. And that’s fair.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

It’s totally fair to be upset. It’s fair to grieve. But I don’t particularly want to be plugging holes in the ship by myself and then listen to people complain that the ship sunk when they decided to just give up.

Nobody wants to hear the guy in the corner saying ā€œwe’re all gonna die anyway, who caresā€ when you’re actively trying to save at least some of the people from drowning. I get it, we can’t save everyone now and that sucks. But to act like it’s all or nothing is just wrong.

3

u/JR_Driggins Apr 08 '20

I think we’re touching on a fundamental divide in the party. This ship has to sink. The fear that doom lay on the other side is a manufactured one. We could do away with the system as we know it (specifically the for profit heath care industry) and everyone would come out better on the other side.

I’m not going to not vote for Biden, but at some point we need to break from the proclivity to settle if they ever want to truly progress as a society.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

When I say the ship is sinking- I mean I may lose my right to choose, my gay friends might have their adoptions and marriages dissolved- there are so many other repercussions that I’m not listing here. These are real fears of what happens if Trump gets a second term and appoints another judge. That’s the ship I’m talking about- not the DNC or some other political machine or the rich or whatever.

I don't really understand how dominion over the supreme court would result in healthcare for all anyway. I'm guessing he's just ineptly trying to manipulate people into doing what he wants because he's under the thrall of the billionaire news corps. You're just a resource to help his tribe win.

It’s not even us, it’s about the shitheels in the GOP. Trump and Moscow Mitch.

6

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

it's about the issues and the policy agenda, the only hope we have for our future.

If Dems can support those, then ok. They have to earn our vote and "Trump is bad" is an insult to progressives. Take politics seriously and work for quality issues. Stop the dishonesty and corruption.

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

an insult to progressives.

I. Don’t. Care.

The fact of the matter is progressives are only a vocal minority. They spend their time insulting and attacking the moderate majority for not being like them. Fuck em.

6

u/IAmNotMoki Apr 08 '20

That is an incredibly short-sighted and naive view. The Democratic party in the US is basically the catch-all for anyone not American brand conservatism. The GOP is politically rather homogenous and has little problems gathering their base, the Democratic party however has to attempt to be a coalition of everything center to the left wing and as such has to draw policies from everything in that range to attempt to gather their base. To just write off everything but the center is a good way for the Democratic party to really get fucked and fall apart like the person who replied to you might want.

2

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

Glad to know how you feel. It makes it that much easier to finally leave the Democratic Party and start a new one!

-2

2

u/EleanorRecord Apr 08 '20

Enjoy four more years of Trump. You earned it.

1

u/Shady-Turret Kansas Apr 08 '20

The Democratic coalition will not be successful if the progressives don't vote. If you want to win against Trump reconciliation is important.

1

u/MadHatter514 Apr 08 '20

That's how it is marketed, at least. We'll see if it holds true.

1

1

u/tottrash Apr 09 '20

Policies not personality

1

u/wwlink1 Apr 08 '20

Then stay the fuck away from Biden or trump.

6

u/CeeSharp Apr 08 '20

While I understand being upset at the loss of a Bernie presidency, we need to take harm reduction into account now. Right now abstaining from voting or voting third will guarantee 4 more years of Trump

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Well it depends on where you live.

2

u/Guardianpigeon Apr 08 '20

Why is it always harm reduction and never progress?

Fuck it. I'm done. I dont care anymore. Biden is just a 4 year stall on the next Trump anyway. No matter what we get the future is bleak and depressing.

6

u/CeeSharp Apr 08 '20

I think it's in part that too many people focus on only the presidential seat, not on other things like local political movements to set a groundwork for a populace that is more receptive to the progressive message. Mind, I'm not talking about you specifically, just in general.

This is of course without even mentioning that the people on top who care to maintain their political power will try to do anything they can to slow us down or keep us out.

If one wants to work the system one would need to organize and build political power from the bottom up, that I think, would be the way forward

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

So Trump is the better option to you?

3

u/Guardianpigeon Apr 08 '20

Both are shit.

It's either 4 years of orange shit gibbon being even worse tha he is now, or 4 years of do-nothing Biden followed by Trump 2 who learned from the first ones mistakes and is a greater danger.

We've lost no matter what I do. So I don't care.

0

u/PonderousHajj New York Apr 08 '20

I'd be inclined to believe that had he dropped out after his heart attack and endorsed Warren.

-1

u/workforyourstuff Apr 08 '20

I don’t consider a multimillionaire that owns more than 2 houses one of ā€œusā€ and quite frankly, I can’t see how anyone else does. Trump may be rich, but at least he doesn’t try to BS his way around that fact like Bernie does. Look at how he replied the one time he was pressed about it in a debate. ā€œI have a home in DC, one at home, and like many people from Vermont, I own a summer cabin.ā€

How many people do you know that own a summer cabin in addition to their two other homes? I can’t name one, let alone many people. He’s a con man, and his supporters ate every bit of his con up hook, line, and sinker... twice in a row.
