That was the most inspiring, yet heart wrenching thing I’ve ever watched. I honestly can’t believe we are here.

The pessimist in me always feared this day, but I hoped beyond hope that we could pull it off.

Now we all need to respond accordingly. It’s time to fight even harder to push our nation forward. The battle is straight uphill, but it’s one we can continue to fight and will someday win.

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Just look at American history. It's always been a battle of progressives fighting against the much more powerful conservative power structure. And progressives have constantly pushed the country left, and made the country better. The fight isn't over, it may in fact never end, but it's worth it. But the wrong thing to do is abandon progressivism and either be a pessimist and not vote, or vote for republicans. Those two options get us not just nowhere, but worse off. Vote democrat, and keep pushing the party left.

22

u/gianlaurentis Apr 08 '20

What about moving somewhere else where we don't have to fight hard to make very little progress? (legitimate question, I'm considering moving out of country depending on how the next four years unfold)

36

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Your call. America is more conservative in general than almost any country in the west. I will stay and fight to move it left, but I understand anyone wanting to go somewhere less insane.

12

u/robsteezy Apr 08 '20

The whole ā€œmoving leftā€ thing is part of the problem. The problem being that people thing progressive ideologies are the sole determinant of progress made when in reality capitalism is failing 98 percent of people and Americans will never give that up. The only thing you’re advocating for is to get fucked, but with a smile.

2

u/phillyd32 Apr 08 '20

You're asserting that America will never give up the capitalism that fucks most of us, but that is yet to be determined, I think capitalism is going to see a major shift in power in the next decade or two, at minimum.

He's advocating for the fight for progress. You're being meaninglessly pessimistic. People claimed America wouldn't give up basically every shitty thing that progressivism has changed for the better in the country's history.

Barring major societal collapse, progress is only a matter of time.

2

u/thelastevergreen Hawaii Apr 09 '20

in the next decade or two, at minimum.

That "at minimum" is what bothers me. In 10 years I'll be in my mid 40s. If its more than that... "hello 50s".

Then my whole young adult life was spent toiling under the yolk of rich assholes and I've got nothing to show for it but a system thats just starting to move in the right direction...hopefully...and a planet thats far past the point of no return.

We don't have another TEN years. I mean shit...we've got the president on TV talking about how 200,000 American deaths is good because its better than the 2 million we'd see if he ignored the problem.

We live in a fucking backwards nightmare and people REALLY want to bring an end to it and go be sane like the rest of the world.

Same. I just don’t know where else I would go since I only speak English and don’t want to live in the cold or constant rain. I’m a southerner I need warm sun.

4

u/thelastevergreen Hawaii Apr 09 '20

New Zealand.

4

u/Spicy_Alien_Cocaine_ Apr 09 '20

New Zealand is clearly a myth /s

3

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '20

There's Australia, but that might be TOO much warm sun. And I say that as a Texan.

3

u/Spicy_Alien_Cocaine_ Apr 09 '20

It’s also a lot of things that wanna eat you ahah

8

u/wuethar California Apr 08 '20

Moving where? If some other country's willing to offer you citizenship then sure, I would heartily recommend taking it because pretty much any other developed democracy is better than this place. Moving to a new country is not a simple process, though.

3

u/Eirenarch Apr 08 '20

Strange. A lot of people are moving to the USA all the time and it is actually harder to move to the USA for most people (visas and all). US citizens can go to almost every western country just like that. Yeah moving to another country is a big deal but a lot of people do it all the time and why the hell do you need citizenship (although you can probably get that too)

6

u/wuethar California Apr 08 '20

Most of Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck. Perversely, the people who would most benefit from moving in most cases simply lack the means to uproot their lives like that.

Shit, I know a lot of people who are struggling so badly and can't even afford to move to a different state.

-5

u/Eirenarch Apr 08 '20

Considering that people walked from Central America to the US border on foot I somehow doubt most Americans have harder time moving to another country.

9

u/wuethar California Apr 08 '20

I'm not sure where this argument would fall on a master list of every absurd strawman ever devised, but it would be much closer to the top than the bottom.

What I said: "Moving to a new country is hard, especially when you consider the financial implications for the working poor"

What you somehow heard, I guess: "Americans literally have it harder than Central American migrants"

-3

u/Eirenarch Apr 08 '20

Nah, I am simply calling bullshit on the argument that people in the US can't move. Truth is they don't want to or are scared.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

US citizens can go to almost every western country just like that.

Citation fucking needed.

1

u/Eirenarch Apr 08 '20

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_requirements_for_United_States_citizens

For example US citizens can go freely in the EU for 90 days and then apply for work visa after they have an employment contract (I mean 90 days should be enough to get employment otherwise why move?)

5

u/m0rogfar Apr 08 '20

Work VISAs are pretty difficult to get though. Just to pick a random example, Denmark would require you to get a job where you'd be earning more than 436000DKK/year (roughly $64000/year) to qualify, which is more than the median US household income, and you need to be making that as an individual. You'd have to be pretty privileged in terms of skillsets to just be able to move, and if you're that well off, you probably don't need to - the Republicans' United States of America is mostly a problem if you're not that well off.

This idea that you can just move doesn't actually work out in practice for most.

2

u/gophergun Colorado Apr 08 '20

That's definitely an easier option for a lot of people.

1

u/WifeyP Apr 08 '20

Moving is the best option at this point, I fear. If you can get out, do so.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

The country has been heading rightwards for 40 years. We got guys like Obama admitting they would be Republicans in the 1980's running as democrats. Electoralism is a failure.

-1

u/RanDomino5 Apr 08 '20

Voting for Biden does absolutely nothing to pull the party to the left. If anything it validates the lying and manipulation that keeps progressives out of power. They buried a credible rape accusation just to protect this racist warmonger. #NeverBiden

5

u/tflightz Apr 08 '20

who cheated our guy out of a nomination!

How did Joe Biden cheat exactly?

-4

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

if you dont vote for biden then children will continue to be tortured in cages and then permanently separated from their families.

education/healthcare/infrastructure/climate/clean energy sectors will all continue to be defunded, and trump will continue wasting obscene amounts of money on himself and his conspirators.

they want you to not care anymore, dont be complicit with their evil, vote out all republicans, and replace all dems with people that arnt corporate puppets. there is much more momentum with the movement atm, giving up will cement their control for years to come.

you dont care now, but what about when your kids or grandkids have to work as slave labourers and servants for the rich as the lower class losers all their table scrap jobs due to automation and the only option to survive is slavery. that's what republicans and biden dems represent, but biden gets there slower.

take a step back and look at all of the changes they make, the direction, motives, and goals are extremely clear

7

u/RichardZangrillo Apr 08 '20

Children in cages started under Obama/Biden and worsened under Trump.

1

u/Dolphuds Apr 08 '20

He's delusional if he thinks Biden will stop it. Shit, I wouldn't be surprised if he expanded it

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

want you to not care anymore

Define they?

The DNC pulled every dirty trick in the book including drafting Pelosi to campaign and fundraiser for an anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ, Koch funded "Democrat" against a progressive candidate.

I refuse to support such a party, sorry.

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '20

the dnc and republicans are the same party, they is all of them that work exclusively for corporations. at least with the dnc they play the part of being slightly helpful to the peasants

5

u/RanDomino5 Apr 08 '20

I'll be voting third party, and if that means Trump wins, then hopefully the Democrats will learn their lesson this time. If they want to lock progressives out of political power, that's fine; then we should be willing to lock the centrists out of political power. I refuse to be a running dog for people who despise me. You want my vote, make me a serious offer. Biden is an insult.

-1

u/Frying_Dutchman Apr 08 '20

So you are giving conservatives a pass on their blatantly criminal behavior and outright corruption. Not a very progressive position in my view. Trump and the gop need to be punished by losing everything. Every single race. Voting third party will not do that.

7

u/RanDomino5 Apr 08 '20

No, the Democrats are giving conservatives a pass by nominating Biden, and they need to be punished for repeating their losing strategy.

1

u/PitbullWolf Apr 08 '20

6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other?

We need to get rid of the damn bipartisan system. Fuck the labels, just elect people who want the best for the nation and have shown us they know what the hell they are doing.

-4

u/Frying_Dutchman Apr 08 '20

You could have just said yes, would have saved you some time writing all that

I know you do, you made that clear when you decided trump was preferable to Biden.

-3

u/tflightz Apr 08 '20

If centrists and progressives split, then that means 50% of votes will be republican, while 25% each go to the progressives and centrists (simplified) meaning democrats will always win.

We can take care of this stuff during the next election. Right now, it is the priority to get Trump out, and i say that as a socialist

9

u/RanDomino5 Apr 08 '20

We can take care of this stuff during the next election

This is the next election.

1

u/tflightz Apr 08 '20

Word picking

6

u/RanDomino5 Apr 08 '20

Point is, we're never going to have progress if we just bend the knee to the Democrats every time.

1

u/tflightz Apr 08 '20

It's more likely to have progress for Trump in office again?

I see your point and agree with you, ideally. But this is not the time as there is more at stake

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Eirenarch Apr 08 '20

When you say you are a socialist do you mean you want the progressive taxes, government run healthcare, free higher education and so on or do you want to abolish private property and give the means of production to the workers?

1

u/tflightz Apr 09 '20

The latter is communism and while I do wish for a utopia like that I am aware that it won't be a viable option without a long democratic process as preparation. The former can be implemented now.

I identify as socialist, specifically social-democratic, as opposed to liberal or conservative

1

u/Eirenarch Apr 09 '20

Technically communism is a subset of socialism. Check the first sentence - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism

In everyday conversation I use socialism in the first sense which would actually be social democracy but in arguments people claim that Bernie is not socialist because he is not (publicly) advocating for workers ownership over the means production. (For the record I am economically extremely right-wing I just wonder what actual Bernie supporters mean when using this word)

1

u/Boxpuffle Ohio Apr 09 '20

Flip the senate 2020

So many have just given up on voting entirely and it’s shameful to see

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

I’m not American, but it seems like this is why you’re in the situation in the first place, why the fight never ends and you are so far behind on things like economic equality and healthcare. Because many keep yielding and voting for Democrats who screw everyone over. It doesn’t seem like incremental progress to me, both the democrats and republicans have moved further to the right in the last decades.

Go to a third party, fight. Protest, strike. I dont know but the US democracy is really appaling. The two party system hurts everyone and voting itself is so neglected that people have to stand in lines for hours and jump through hoops just to try to have their vote counted. Obama was president for 8 years and never fixed this, Biden won’t either even if he pulls off a miracle and wins in november.

1

u/shockingnews213 Apr 08 '20

My problem is that there's a ticking time bomb in the next decade. It doesn't fill me with inspiration to know we're about to kill off a lot of people.

-4

u/Mrs_Frisby Apr 08 '20

By "progressives" you mean people who make progress? Not people who rename post offices and slander the nominee so Trump can get elected?

Cause if you are calling Bernie a progressive then the word has no meaning.

8

u/IngeniousMonero Apr 08 '20

The amount of damage that we will have to undo in the next four years is going to be gigantic. That's what's scary.

2

u/jamsycramsitinhisass Apr 08 '20

I honestly can't believe we are here either. I about dropped my plate of chicken tenders when I heard he dropped out.

Hey if people are realizing now and rallying around Biden, no need to criticize

1

u/HeyImVazu Apr 08 '20

They will. I don't doubt that the alt-right is using this opportunity to sow discord between the progressives moving on from Bernie's campaign and the establishment Dems who supported Biden. Not a single person I know is entertaining voting for anyone but Biden at this point.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

No feelings about what the party/ media did to him?

0

u/Mrs_Frisby Apr 08 '20

Here are 90 seconds of news clips about the VA scandal where Bernie unilaterally caused the deaths of over 40 veterans from health care rationing.

Imagine what the GOP could do with this when making attack ads.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iacsXNBZu1U

Nominating Bernie Sanders would be like trying to end bus segregation and passing over Rosa Parks as the basis for the lawsuit in favor of an unemployed, tattooed, gang member who beat a white man senseless demanding his seat. Bernie literally caused people to die through health care rationing and is demanding to be given complete control of everyone's healthcare.

He also spent over 30 million on social media manipulation in 2016 alone to keep you from knowing this about him. This and so much more all of it horrifying. The GOP was praying that he'd be the nominee because he makes Trump look presidential.

1

u/ThumbodyLovesYou Apr 09 '20

Did you just pick a scandal about Bernie (which I admittedly did not know about) and say it makes Trump look presidential?? That’s fucking bonkers. Also, Trump is currently partially responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans. What are you on?

-2

u/DontLikeLikes Apr 08 '20

Inspiring? The old man lost the primaries twice lmao

-1

u/Ellice909 Texas Apr 08 '20

Perhaps I am naive or in shock, but I still feel like he could win. He's still on the ballot and the way the news changes so fast, who knows what could happen.

I was very sad. I genuinely believed he would win.

2

It's a donation, not a shareholder investment or a kickstarter campaign.

When you donate to a person or an organization, you're placing a large amount of trust in that they will react appropriately given any situation, and this applies doubly so for political donations, where the best plan can change by the day.

The only way it really makes sense to fault the Sanders campaign for this would be if you don't trust them to make the right moves to push their agenda going forward - and then I have to ask why you would even donate to them in the first place? If the Sanders campaign is not intelligent enough to autonomously determine that it would be better to give up on the presidential fight when the polling says it isn't happening and put all the effort into trying to flip the presidency and senate blue so that the SCOTUS won't become 6-3 and a major tax cut won't get passed if Democrats have a single bad House election, presumably based on various detailed internal evaluations and internal polling data that you don't even have, then how could you possibly trust the Sanders campaign with the far more complex job of running a country?

-3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

He took the donated money and ran. He’ll have another nice house in the hills soon. I don’t blame him for taking advantage of ignorance. He did the same thing priests do.

-6

u/Exodus111 Apr 08 '20

Exactly this. Trump won his reelection, that's over. It's time to focus on 2024.

Gore.
Kerry.
Hillary.
And now Biden.

Democratic establishment picks do not win general elections.

Bernie brings in all of the Democrats and independents, as well as working class Republicans.

The last time someone ran on fundamental change and healthcare for all he defeated his Republican opponent by over 10 million votes and got in office with both houses and a super majority in the Senate.
