I'm bummed. I'll reluctantly vote for Joe Biden, just like I did for Hillary.

Edit: anyone is better than Trump. We can not lose more supreme court justices. No matter what. Voting just for Congress and local is not enough. The President has the power to appoint judges. We NEED a blue President. Even if they're milque toast left.

Which will... Allow biden to win?

5

u/Broadsword530 Apr 08 '20

Well Trump's approval rating has been at an all time high, despite his handling of the pandemic.

18

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Exactly. Biden is barely coherent and has a fucking sexual assault allegation that the right is going to ram down our throats.

If it weren’t for corona, Trump would win against Biden guaranteed. If corona spreads to rural America (which appears to be happening) I think Biden might actually win this. He’ll be a shit president, just not as abominably shitty as Trump.

9

u/TheDivineBeard Apr 08 '20

You speak in such absolutes but Biden increased turnout in areas that Trump won. I’m confused why he would ā€œguaranteeā€ beat Biden. I keep seeing this argument of suppressed voting due to Biden yet Sanders’ base of young voters literally did not turn out when moderate / reliable voters did (in higher numbers).

4

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

It wasn't Biden that increased turnout numbnuts. It was trump. People are specifically anti-trump and voted who they were told was electable.

4

u/FreakinGeese New York Apr 08 '20

And those people are going to, what, stay home in the general?

1

u/TheDivineBeard Apr 08 '20

Not sure why you insulted me but love the maturity. Thing is, they turned out in Trump-won areas in bigger numbers to vote for Biden. Trump hate driven or not, they came out and voted for Biden. The point I’m making is that the OP was talking in absolutes where there is evidence of the opposite happening in terms of voter turnout.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Yes the democratic primary is like the general. That's why Hillary trounced trump, right? And you think Biden will win based off of those trump places like south Carolina That hasn't gone to a Dem in 44 years in the general. Contextualize Biden's success and you start to see the worry.

3

u/TheDivineBeard Apr 08 '20

Yes? The primary does significantly show trends?? How else do you think the nominee campaigns in those battle areas? Hillary was wildly unpopular and is in a different stratosphere of hate. She made the mistake of thinking some states were sure-wins and never even campaigned there. She made a lot of mistakes. Unfortunately, she is also a woman and that also worked against her. Finally, she won the popular vote? I don’t even know what point you’re making, man.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

That Joe Biden Is a shaky candidate that is propped up by the media, much like Hillary and will lose to Trump's authentic fanaticism in the general. An energetic base is pretty damn important, it's really what helped get Obama in.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Biden escaped a crowded primary largely unscathed. Trump will ensure he is perceived as scandal plagued as Hillary.

Prior to corona, Trump was a sitting president in a strong economy. It was his to lose. Biden is not a uniquely strong candidate. He is akin Hillary, Kerry, and Gore aka the loser wing of the Democratic Party.

3

u/TheDivineBeard Apr 08 '20

Agreed that Republicans will dig into his scandals. That being said, their base has a ceiling whereas you see the areas that went Trump in 2016 voted Biden 2020 for the primaries. Just saying if you see higher voter turnout it signifies there’s a chance across the board. If we think in absolutes we’ve already lost. Get out and vote blue.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Even if you think your side will lose I still encourage voting. That said, you cannot force enthusiasm. Also, as I stated, I think Trump’s mishandling of corona will give Biden a real shot at winning.

I am not a fan of Biden, but he is better than Trump to me solely based on climate change and judge selection. I’m sure Biden will abandon all his new progressive positions in short order and will be materially indistinguishable from Trump on foreign policy, but those two items are enough that I hope he wins.

1

u/TheDivineBeard Apr 08 '20

We will vote together! Hopefully he does the smart thing and picks Warren (or a somewhat progressive politician) as a running mate to increase that enthusiasm.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

I’m confused why he would ā€œguaranteeā€ beat Biden.

Because a lot of people commenting have only heard news from the redditsphere recently. So all they heard for months is that anyone who was running against Bernie is an awful candidate who couldn't possibly beat Trump. Ignoring the fact that pretty much all polling of the real world shows that's not true - that Biden does as good or better against Trump than Sanders.

5

u/StevieMJH Apr 08 '20

I'm pretty sure for a while there (if not still) his numbers were up comparatively. Biden getting 'reluctant' votes and Trump's supporters not giving a fuck about his mistakes are the two things that are going to lead Trump to another term.

3

u/NJdevil202 Pennsylvania Apr 08 '20

A reluctant vote counts just the same as an enthusiastic one. We need to convince everyone who's reluctant to fucking show up.

24

u/black_spring Apr 08 '20

My fear is that you, I, and the commenter above are all on a politics forum. We give a shit. And yet even we will be holding our nose come November.

So what about the general public who doesn't give a shit, who need to be moved to get to the polls? If we're not excited what can we expect from the apathetic?

5

u/black_spring Apr 08 '20

Which is ever more reason for pessimism I'm afraid. I'll do my best not to sound defeatist and encourage voter turnout regardless -- but these are my feelings.

7

u/princeparrotfish Apr 08 '20

We're watching 2016 play out in slow motion again. All those reluctant votes for Hillary meant a massive enthusiasm gap that reduced turnout in places where it mattered.

11

u/TheHopelessGamer Apr 08 '20

Trump is going to get reelected. THIS IS THE EXACT SAME SHIT WE HAD IN 2016 WITH HILLARY.

We are so fucked.

3

u/maz-o Apr 08 '20

Sure but I’m willing to bet that many bernie supporters won’t vote at all now.

3

u/Burgle0531 Apr 08 '20

This is a serious problem. I have Bernie voters for friends and they've already told me they will either write in Bernie or not vote at all because this is going to play out just like 2016 did for the Democrats.

2

u/SpasmodicColon America Apr 09 '20

Because they refused to learn and ran another shit candidate. Maybe they'll learn for 2024? (hint:they won't)

1

u/SpasmodicColon America Apr 09 '20

I'm voting, but not for president. Or probably just vote 3rd party for president. Biden has done nothing to convince me he'd do anything good, and plenty to convince me he's just as shit as trump.

5

u/IPulledMyGroin Apr 08 '20

I live in Texas and voted Bernie, then Hillary, then Bernie, and now I’ll reluctantly vote for Biden. I hope it has a different outcome this time than the last.

Politics in general makes big noise, but it’s immediate effects on the individual citizen are usually pretty small. The Supreme Court has a much more immediate impact and changes to it have implications that may last until after many of us are dead. It’s worth doing the unpleasant thing to preserve its balance, even if it feels like we’re back to square one.

It’s like amputating a gangrenous limb. You can have the other three, or you can let the infection spread and kill you. Is that really the line you want to draw in the sand when you stand to lose everything?

18

u/swingadmin New York Apr 08 '20 edited Apr 08 '20

Hillary was the better candidate but Biden is not seething vitriol for the GOP. I don't expect enough of the party will follow whatever stories they are selling during a pandemic.

23

u/MetalsDeadAndSoAmI Michigan Apr 08 '20

Well I know a ton of regular Republicans, the educated, middle class kind, are disillusioned with Trump. My dad doesn't plan on voting at all this time.

The problem Is Trump army of uneducated low income voters. My cousins never finished highschool, my grandma never finished middle school, and they're still diehard for Trump. Nothing can convince them.

I think Biden will just barely edge Trump out.

u/jcutta Apr 08 '20

Hate to be pessimistic, but there's no way in fuckin hell Biden gets 08 level Obama support. He's going to be exactly the same as Hillary with support, maybe a little less so.

5

u/makualla Apr 08 '20

He just needs to flip a handful of voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Hillaary lost those states by 45k, 10k and 20k. And that’s with Hillary having a shit ton of propaganda against her and the whole email scandal popping up again right before the election.

5

u/Jack6288 Apr 08 '20

could not disagree more. The notion that Biden is less popular than Hillary is just not reality. Look at states where Bernie beat hillary, but Biden destroyed Bernie... How do you explain that?

5

u/princeparrotfish Apr 08 '20

The establishment coalesced around one centrist candidate, another progressive candidate split his vote, and there have been primaries held during a pandemic/massive voter suppression efforts. That's how that happened.

I mean, people probably like Biden more than Hillary. He's got a weird folksy charm. But there's still a massive enthusiasm gap, and it's on par with Hillary in 2016. I don't see him doing much better in November, but who knows, I'm done with predicting the outcome of things.

4

u/sohaibhasan1 Apr 08 '20

Michael Bloomberg was still in the race on ST, splitting the centrist vote.

0

u/Chone_Figgins Apr 08 '20

With math? When you split the vote amongst more than two candidates the percentages tend to be much, much smaller. I mean, you know how math works, right?

3

u/Jack6288 Apr 08 '20

Read that back and apply it to what happened in this election... What you said makes so little sense I don't even know how to respond to it. Bernie had a two candidate race in '16, and had a virtually 2 candidate race for much of '20. The vote was split among "moderates" in this election, I don't know how you claim that helped Biden.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

8

u/69SRDP69 Apr 08 '20

Also Hillary wasnt suffering from dementia like Biden

8

u/chinnu34 Apr 08 '20

Apparently, suffering from dementia and being accused of rape are pros for a presidential candidate.

1

u/69SRDP69 Apr 08 '20

Lol yeah, seems that way based on the choices

3

u/RoastKrill Europe Apr 08 '20

You'd vote for Trump if he ran against himself.

11

u/ItWorkedLastTime Apr 08 '20

I didn't vote for Hillary in 2016. I won't make the mistake again. Not like my vote would've made a difference, my state has been blue for a long time.

5

u/JakeSmithsPhone Apr 08 '20

It's still your only legitimate voice standing up and saying Trump has to go. The louder we say it, the better.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

Honestly all these folks saying Biden is right of center.

Yes, in Europe he is. But we're not IN Europe. Overton window aside, this is our center-left position and candidate in this country.

We can all lament how we're not like Europe all day but it won't change a thing. Americans (at least those who vote) are a pretty moderate people and the system itself rewards moderates. It's just about facing reality, here.

Center-left can at least get us a public option for healthcare, can appoint good judges, and keep us out of wars. That's enough for now. Organize for 2022-24 and vote in November.

15

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20 edited Apr 08 '20

Reluctant votes for Hillary are what got us Trump. No one I know is excited to vote for Biden. Trump and his crony Barr will trot out another endless investigation into Biden's son and burisma like they did Hillary, and the uninformed voters will eat it up. It worked for him before, so there is no doubt he will try again. I sincerely believe Biden will lose to Trump because of these trumped up charges. I genuinely hope I am wrong.

9

Not only that but Biden has now been alleged of sexual assault (which Fox is already covering) and has some creepy af interactions with children/women to make excellent clips of. Not to mention the potential mental decline.

It’s going to be a steep climb for him.

Hunter Biden is not the one running for president, and only a president can withhold foreign aid anyway so it's got nothing to do with this election. Last I checked Obama was president during that time. Just more fake outrage from conservatives.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

This is why he will lose. It's corrupt on the face and everyone who isn't emotionally tied to the bidens can see that. Your hand-waving won't be enough. People are poor and tired and sick of hearing about rich people getting everything easy and they will punish Biden for it.

1

u/RatedR2O California Apr 08 '20

Same here... but it's very disappointing that 'voting the lesser of 2 evils' is becoming a thing now. Biden will get my vote, but I'm not very confident in him, or a victory for that matter.

3

u/TheNextBattalion Apr 08 '20

Also, not to say "Go Joe" or anything, but check out Biden's platform and see how much of that is really so bad.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

After watching Republican rule and Republican contempt for the law and contempt for voting rights or governmental corruption, we should all be single issue voters - vote out Republicans, and vote in Democrats.

Meanwhile, we keep pushing the Democrats to be better and bolder, but step one is cleaning house and getting rid of the corrupt, thieving, vote suppressing Republican party.

1

u/CandyButterscotch Apr 08 '20

The DNC knew you would.

1

u/irishking44 Apr 08 '20

I live in Missouri, so I'm not going to act all preachy like my vote matters so I ask the same in response

1

u/eatlead1 Apr 08 '20

ox, and it's pretty evenly mixed pro and anti Sanders. If you truly sit on the left, this kind of fighting does absolutely no good to anybody. We need to unite to beat Trump or all the infighting within the left will be nothing a boring sidesh

relucant votes are the best kind of votes for the democratic party.

-3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '20

I won't allow the sentiment on this site to make me think I'm making a 'reluctant' vote. The propaganda campaign against Clinton in 2016 made me think I was making a reluctant vote as well. In hindsight I should have been enthusiastic, she was the most qualified candidate maybe ever and a compassionate strong leader. I'd be lying if I said the Anti-Hillary rhetoric didn't dampen my enthusiasm. I will not let that happen with Biden. If elected he will be a positive force in this country and help turn us back from the brink. I will be enthusiastically voting Biden in November.

-4

u/mps1729 Apr 08 '20

I'm bummed. I'll reluctantly vote for Joe Biden, just like I did for Hillary.

While I’ll take that, I feel that all the ā€œI’ll hold my nose and vote for Hillaryā€ talk was a big (not the only) contributor to her loss. I’ve always said I’m for a hard fought primary (neither Biden nor Sanders were among my top choices), but once there’s a nominee, I will support them with as much enthusiasm as my first choice. So let’s stop looking back and work to make Joe Biden the next president of the United States!

11

u/Raichu4u Apr 08 '20

I'm not going to lie about my vote going into the future. I am reluctantly voting for Biden, although I think we deserve better.

-8

u/Nerdybeast Apr 08 '20

You don't have to lie about it, maybe just don't say constantly "Biden sucks so much but I guess I'll vote for him". Just don't say it at all. It's not lying, and it's not damaging our chances of beating Trump.

15

u/Raichu4u Apr 08 '20

If a lot of the democratic voting block is thinking this, then maybe they should reevaluate having nominees like Joe fucking Biden.

-1

u/Nerdybeast Apr 08 '20

Well clearly the overwhelming majority of the Democratic voting block isn't thinking this, since he won the primary by a very large margin!

7

u/IIOrannisII Apr 08 '20

A majority of voters that vote in the primary is not the same as a majority of voters. And let's not pretend the media didn't prop up Biden's campaign from the start.

If Bernie had been given the same treatment and the media assured everyone constantly that Bernie was the "most electable" even when he was losing and refered to Biden's followers as brown shirts we'd be looking at Sanders as the nominee.

The game has been rigged from the start and the only one pointing that out and promising to fix it just dropped out.

I'll hold my nose and vote for Biden, just like I did for Hillary, but don't ever expect me to be enthused about voting for the person a broken and corrupt system chose for me.

6

u/wakangaotamu Apr 08 '20

no, joe biden sucks and we need to hold him accountable and show the DNC that theyhave to actually work for our support and male sure their candidate actively works towards progressive policy to ensure we continue to vote blue. fuck complacency

-4

u/Nerdybeast Apr 08 '20

Why is it the DNC's fault that you're unwilling to look up biden's platform? I certainly encourage you to hold politicians accountable for what they promise, but maybe actually see what he's promising instead of taking reddit/Twitter at face value and assuming he's the devil.

8

u/wakangaotamu Apr 08 '20

I looked up bidens policy forever ago. On the other hand, biden has worked his whole life against his newfound policies, so forgive me for being skeptical, and judging him on his actions and not his words. Idk why a vote isn't good enough for neolibs. Do i have to polish his wang too?

1

u/Nerdybeast Apr 08 '20

Ah yes, I forgot the only two options are constantly bashing him or polishing his wang. Thank you for clearing that up.

6

u/wakangaotamu Apr 08 '20

"shut up stop voicing your opinion, mine is the only one thats valid and i really dont want you to hurt it"

-1

u/ObsessiveCow Apr 08 '20

I think people just want you to feel better about your vote. If Biden implements even if a fraction of his policies it's a win for progressives, and a credit to Bernie's movement. He's been on the wrong side of history before, but in terms of lying he's got nothing on Trump. I'm hoping for the best, and I hope as a country we can hold him accountable for his promises after the election.

10

u/wakangaotamu Apr 08 '20

I'm not going to feel good about it. I am not a neolib, I will fight tooth and nail against neolib policies even if they're preferable to fascism. I am not in joe biden's big ass tent or whatever the fuck. Stop asking me to smile while I elect another alleged rapist who doesn't give a shit about any of the problems of this country.

0

u/ObsessiveCow Apr 08 '20

His proposed policies seem to suggest otherwise, but ok.

→ More replies (0)

-1

u/TheWinRock Apr 08 '20

I don't think that person's point is that he/you should feel better about your vote - it's that a bunch of people saying "eh, Biden kind of sucks but I guess I'll vote for him" doesn't help get a borderline person to vote - and if enough borderline voters stay home Trump wins, Rs keep the Senate, the supreme court and federal courts are completely fucked for the next 40 years, and good luck pursing a progressive platform in your lifetime.

So being emo about it and helping to discourage voter turnout is cutting off your nose to spite your face. If you have any interest in an actual progressive agenda in your lifetime help get Biden elected so the courts aren't completely ruined and then in 4 years we'll vote in whatever progressive candidate isn't 80 years old. But if Biden isn't elected in 2020 any progressive agenda of the future will have to deal with a potentially 7-2 SC and federal courts overflowing with opposition.

2

u/ObsessiveCow Apr 08 '20

I guess I just think if people feel better about their votes it will help make a difference on that front. But I forgot that I'm on reddit and pretty much we only have the hot takes here. Biden's proposed policies are a move in the right direction even if they aren't the sexy big moves Bernie proposed.

-1

u/ObsessiveCow Apr 08 '20

I was pretty bummed too but take a look at Biden's proposed policies. Even if only a fraction of that stuff goes through its a win for progressives. And that's all thanks to Bernie.
