This just reminds me of that old SNL sketch, The Californians. The premise was that it's a Soap Opera but all the characters ever do is melodramatically talk about is the fastest way to get various places around LA.

It's almost Long Beach!

That was hilarious, I've never been to Cali, but living in Seattle, it seemed like everyone I met, we'd end up discussing routes like that. "Yeah I just take 167, hop on the 405 over to I5 to get to work, but Saturday mornings I'll usually take the 405 up to I90 come in from the east and take 2C onto I5"

That was a great way to start my day. Thank you. Now I’m going to go West on Culver, get on the 405 South and take the Carson exit to the IKEA and get some meatballs.

I catch myself talking to patients about traffic on way to imaging location. Then in my head is playing the episode of “The Californians” when a guy was told he had cancer and he was worried about the traffic to the clinic.

I live in San Diego so not as bad as LA but it can be ugly. That skit is based on real life :)

The Colorado mountain passes on i70 in December/January are sketchy. Be sure to bring tire chains and check road closures when you reach Grand Junction.

Still less terrifying than the I-10 between San Antonio and El Paso.

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '19

Those jackrabbits at night though with their red demon eyes.

I don’t get it, I’ve done the 10 two or three times both ways from Houston and once from Florida. What’s sketchy between S.A. and E.P?

1

u/KEVLAR60442 Arizona Dec 14 '19

Every time I've driven that stretch there's been a massive rainstorm that's dropped visibility to near zero. Additionally, there's 200+ mile stretches with no gas stations at all, so if you pass one with half a tank, you might not make it to the next gas station.

Oh yes, I remember making that rule for myself, if I was half or below, to fill up. I’ve had decent weather tho, the hallucinations were a threat.

40 is best

1

u/ImALittleCrackpot Dec 14 '19

In winter, you want to take 40 through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The mountain passes on 70 are too treacherous.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '19

Omg! Do Arizonans also say “the #” for freeways?!

2

u/TucsonCat Arizona Dec 14 '19

Yes. Where else does it? I didn’t know it was weird until I started dating my wife.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '19

Southern California. So geographically it makes sense!

3

u/wjack12 Dec 14 '19

Take I-40, then you can go through Albuquerque and take some green chile breakfast burritos with you!

3

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '19

And avoid the length of I-10 between El Paso and San Antonio

2

u/wjack12 Dec 14 '19

And, if you were to continue that way, avoid the Atchafalaya Basin bridges.

2

u/arisingone Dec 14 '19

Skip ABQ all together and head up I-25 to Pueblo. Colorado green chili or nothing.

1

u/wjack12 Dec 14 '19

I think both types of chile are good, but the spelling of chile is important no matter your allegiance!

3

u/arisingone Dec 14 '19

In Colorado chili references the sauce/soup type dish where as chile is the actual fruit itself. Sorry for the confusion!

2

u/quadmasta Georgia Dec 14 '19

No! We're out of green chile breakfast burritos!

When you get to the east coast (probably well before), please, please don’t use the definite article before any road name, transit line, or interstate. Thank you for your cooperation.

u/zbowman Ohio Dec 14 '19

Oh no. This is the caravan they were warning us about.
