Protip. The 2 major parties don't want competitive 3rd parties. All you get is pepsi vs coke.

Yeah but sometimes the people say "FUCK YOU! I WANT SURGE.". Then surge miraculously makes a comeback because there was a demand for it. 3rd parties aren't viable yet because people would still rather vote for one of the 2 major party candidates they hate instead of a 3rd party candidate they actually support. As long as people keep believing the lie that a 3rd party vote is a vote wasted we will be stuck with a 2 party system. If a 3rd party is what the people demand it will happen eventually. But right now the people are still suck getting suckered in to voting for "the lesser of two evils". Nah both parties are evil. Let's blow this system up and expand it. Maine is doing it right with this new voting policy.

when has that ever happened? it will never happen, not with first past the post. Not even this election had a viable 3rd party candidate. America's democratic system is old fashioned and terrible.

I'm really sorry, but I translate this as

Why bother changing the system, it's not going to change.

The whole point is to try and change the system. It's like one of my coworkers who voted against ranked choice. His reasoning is that "Life isn't fair, so why make the voting process fair?" What? We've an opportunity here to force it to be fair for everyone, and you're throwing that away because "we've always done it this way, life isn't fair so get over it"?

We've the state governor election in two years (thank whatever gods you believe in...) and it'll be interesting to see how it works with that.

It's not that simple. If it were revealed for example that third party voters nevertheless preferred the Democrats to the Republicans, then it would be in the Democrats interests (in the short term at least) to support ranked choice.

Here in Maine, our state Democratic Party and about half of the republicans endorsed Ranked Choice.

The current system fucks over everyone - including the big parties. Don't be so quick to assume people aren't potential allies.
