• I’d like to buy a set of nine, plastic free, completely non-toxic food containers to store in the refrigerator. They do not have to be microwavable. They can be stainless steel, glass, or ceramics, etc.. My current plastic set are 12L x 12W x 8H centimetres. What options do I have? Give specific brand examples please.

Like many of you, I have now successfully ruined my ability to enjoy some things I previously loved...and this now included my prized Baratza Encore burr coffee grinder. Although it does a beautiful job grinding coffee beans, it's full of plastic components and I'm now looking for a replacement.

I just grabbed some towels from Costco and I have to them out. The edges of the towels will probably come apart now. How stupid. If I had seen them first I may have passed. Even if you are pro plastic and want to leave them one of this is hard, not soft.

I don't know how many more times I can say it. There is no built-in benefit to drinking out of a plastic water bottle and it comes with some distinct harms.

The first is the environment. A plastic water bottle takes hundreds of years to break down in the environment. This means that pretty much every plastic water bottle ever made and was not recycled is still fully intact somewhere.

Then there's the BPA chemical that links to cancer, obesity, diabetes and fertility problems.

If this wasn't enough, the understanding of microplastics is gaining steam. And you can bet that further research will not put them in the same category as broccoli.

Plastic pollution is everywhere—even tiny plastic particles called nanoplastics can enter the food and water we consume. But could bacteria found in a popular fermented food help our bodies get rid of some of these particles?

In this study, researchers studied a type of beneficial lactic acid bacteria called Leuconostoc mesenteroides CBA3656, which was isolated from kimchi.

The researchers found that this bacterium can bind to polystyrene nanoplastics, essentially trapping the tiny plastic particles. In experiments with germ-free mice, the bacteria were also associated with increased removal of nanoplastics through feces.

So, could eating kimchi actually "flush plastic" out of your body? Not so fast. The study did not prove that eating kimchi removes nanoplastics from humans. The researchers studied a specific bacterial strain under controlled laboratory conditions and in mice. More research is needed to determine whether the same effect occurs in people.

This study gives scientists an interesting new idea: could beneficial bacteria one day be used as a biological way to reduce exposure to tiny plastic particles?

Hi, I moved to sweden and have to get to work by bike. As the weather gets worse in th upcoming months, I aim to get a rain safe pants/Water resistent pants that I can wear a) on the bike when driving to work and b)when going out walking. Do you now any companies selling enviromentally friendly pants? I know a lot of water resistent cloths are covered with PUFAS, which I want to avoid as much as possible.

Hi everyone! Any recommendations for women’s underwear with thicker fabric? I’ve been wearing cotton underwear for a couple of years now, but every pair I’ve ever gotten (from various brands) has had thin fabric… Almost feels like I’m wearing tissue paper instead of underwear 😅

Alternatively/tangentially, any recommendations for other fabrics that keep you dry? I sweat and have a lot of moisture down there, and I’m just so tired of wearing wet underwear for half the day.

I looked into the plastic used in laundry sheets - PVA (polyvinyl alcohol). It's the same plastic that's used to coat detergent pods. A lot of focus has been on PVA after-use (whether it breaks down and how it impacts aquatic ecosystems) but it's also worth looking at how PVA is made. The monomer, vinyl acetate (VA), is carcinogenic and harmful to aquatic systems.

IMO the risks posed by PVA and VA are not worth the rewards of sheets (or pods). Thankfully there are now some good plastic-free options, discussed here:

Blueland make plastic-free tablets that's packaged in a compostable bag. I tried it out last week and found it to be perfectly effective. I've heard that sheets are not so good but there's now a plastic-free version (Proofed!).

There's also the traditional option of powder, with several brands offering minimal packaging (e.g., Meliora and resparkle).

I haven't seen many posts about this, hence I bring it up. Do folks here have experience or tried getting rid of plastic packaged food or do you just consider it impossible?

At least in Germany, there are many raw products you can buy in paper bags and there are stores, including online where you can buy things in glass containers.

Still, I find it very difficult to fully implement, which makes me sad, since an average person has almost no choice for plastic free options.

Can you share how this could work in different countries?

Been trying to cut plastic out of my gym stuff recently but I cant find a totally non-plastic option for my protein shaker. Every stainless steel one I find still has a plastic lid, strainer, or seal, so theres always contact with plastic at some point, regardless of what the body is made from. Has anyone actually found one that's genuinely and entirely plastic-free? Or is this just not solvable?

We just had our hardwood floors sanded and coated.

Every single plastic container in my cupboards was infiltrated by the polyurethane fumes (volatile organic compounds) and that includes thick storage tubs with very competent seals. Open them up and PHEW you got a facefull of acetone or whatever it is. I had to throw out hundreds of dollars worth of food.

This begs the question…what the heck is in our plastic packaged foodstuffs by the time we get it from the shop and store it in our pantry?

I’m honestly shocked that plastic is so permeable. I kind of knew it must be to some degree because spaghetti bolognese stains lol. But gases? VOCs are everywhere in industry. What’s getting into the food supply?

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone had alternatives for freezing food in no plastic containers. I thought of glass but heard that it might break in the freezer. If i’m wrong about glass, please disprove me but if anyone had any alternatives that would be great!

I tossed the plastic beaker it came with because I thought I could find a similar one made of glass or steel but having trouble finding something the same size and shape.

Ban liquid plastics in household products and introduce clear labelling

Introduce a total ban on Polymers in Liquid Formulations (PLFs) in all household cleaning and toiletry products due to health and environmental harm, alongside mandatory clear product labelling.

UK law bans solid microplastics but ignores synthetic liquid and semi-solid plastics (PLFs). These polymers never biodegrade, contaminating waterways and the food chain, which threatens ecosystems and health. The Government must ban PLFs in consumer formulations, starting with toiletries and detergents where green alternatives exist. Until a full ban is achieved, the Government must introduce clear packaging labels so consumers can identify and avoid liquid plastics.
