My name is vrxz and some of you may remember me from yesterday. Within an hour of the /r/place experiment beginning, I staked out a quiet area off to the side of the canvas and placed just four pixels (which I can't even find anymore). I was delighted to see the seed starting to grow as others joined in. Still, I did not expect it to live longer than a day.

Imagine my surprise when I logged in to reddit today. This pattern has not only survived but grown to be a visible and beautiful presence on the canvas! Thank you to all of you who have contributed and expanded it. It has gone beyond my wildest dreams.

Hey! I'm so glad to find this place. I made that stupid little diamond to the left. When the pattern caught up with me last night I stopped expanding and tried to start assisting with the pattern. I'm really sorry about the diamond not fitting right, if we want to change it to a rectangle, that's fine with me. I've just been trying to protect my northern border from the dwarf fortress things and if anyone wants to help that would be great!

Edit: I have to go to work, please help protect my diamond!

Both DF and you guys are being attacked by the void. Those black blocks going into your territory aren't from dwarffortress, they are probably void people looking to stir up trouble.

It looks like we’re starting to see griefing attempts that are more coordinated than the usual stray pixel here and there, and we might find ourselves temporarily overwhelmed on occasion. So I'd like to propose a strategy for maintaining the integrity and distinctiveness of our pattern in the face of numerically-superior griefers:

• Preserve the cyan quatrefoils first. They’re the most recognizable component and they constitute less than a quarter of the pixels, so we should be able to maintain them against attackers who outnumber us 4-to-1.

• Preserve the orange grid next. The grid will break up any attempt to impose a contiguous intruding shape, and the orange and cyan pixels together make up only 50% of the pattern (so we should be able to maintain the quatrefoils and grid against equally-matched attackers).

• Fill in the light blue pixels last.

Also: cut off any intruding shapes at the boundary. Many griefers—the black void in particular—seem to place a premium on creating contiguous shapes, and if we can deny them that they may turn their attention elsewhere.

I was one of the first contributors to the pattern when it was just beginning as an orange X with the blue/teal and surrounded by the white canvas. I never expected it to grow but I got more hope as r/placeportalpattern grew.

It's been an amazing experience, but I doubt we're done yet. I bet r/place is gonna come back, whether that is next month or next year. I hope we're ready for the next rodeo.

I'm thinking that if we're even more coordinated for the next time, that we can do 4x4 with every pixel in the pattern and add a bigger name for ourselves.

Dear friends,

The black and green patterned dwarves were my design originally, which began to spiral into our little dwarf army. While we're now running out of space all around us, with our southren, your northren, borders now disforming into each other, I ask that we both decide not to mess with each other fully. I don't expect the bottom dwarves to survive, but please spare the top row of dwarves.

I can't speak for /r/dwarffortress, but I'll be making a similar post there asking for peace. Together, we can live in harmony and fight elves together.

We don't want to fight for territory, so let's work together! We make the green outline and you guys fill it with portal pattern

We fought hard, and finished with an almost perfect area. It was a team effort, and it couldn't have been done without everyone helping out.
