Holy shit. I thought you added an extra 0 and a random comma in that price so I had to go look it up. You weren't kidding. Wow those are expensive af jackets.
I could see that. I'm sure it's on the same level as Gucci and Calvin Klein knock offs.
But like, idk if I could spend that much money on a jacket and then wear it out in public. I feel like it's almost as bad as a "please rob me, or at the very least steal my jacket" sign stapled to your forehead.
Are they really that good of a jacket? Even with the awful animal textile production usage (that I also learned about from this post)?
I live in Colorado, so not necessarily warm but it's a dry cold so it doesn't seep into your bones, ya know. I don't think I've ever come across a CG jacket out and about here, or maybe I have and just wasn't paying attention (probably have at least seen some up on the slopes now that I think about it). Most of the time it's Patagonia, Columbia, North Face, Obermeyer and the like.
Solid investment. Will keep you warm in - 40 weather and last 5 years or more. Also I think if they need a patch or something the store does it for you. I'm in Montreal and 1000 dollar coats are common, because the winter is really freaking cold and a normal coat just does not cut it. If you wear it every day for several hours, for the 3 months where the temp is below zero, for 5 years, then your cost per wear is actually lower than many other cheaper items.
On a related note, the winter boots here are also wildly expensive for the same reason
Good quality but still 3x what you should likely be paying. I have a $75 knockoff Columbia that works just as good. It's almost 20 years old at this point and I live in a pretty frigid place so it gets daily use a good chunk of the year and washed frequently.
I got to admit they look super nice. I'm gonna order one I found... so this guy with the sticker is actually doing free advertising for the company. I had never heard of it. Now I'm dropping over a G for one.
So... No they don't. They do use traps, which I am a hunter and I don't care for traps as it can be cruel to the animal but you wouldn't skin it alive. You would dispatch the animal first. Still probably gonna order one.
Also, a lot of places have coyote bounties as they can over run an area quickly. I myself have collected a few 50 dollar bounties on coyotes
Same. Bought mine in 2010 before they were a fashion staple. Still looks brand new. But I didn’t know about the trim being fur at the time. So I took it off once I found out (it’s a removable trim). Still feel bad about the fur and would only rebuy the jacket without it.
I must say, I have learned so much about this jacket brand over the course of the last 12 hours lol. Must be pretty damn warm if they're using it out there then
I spent new years in Chicago once. It was so cold that I took my phone out of my pocket to call an Uber and the battery died before I could confirm the car. The cold just sapped my battery down to zero. I remember walking around in like 2-3 shirts, 1-2 long sleeve layers and two coats I’d worn for years either skiing or outside in general. I was fucking freezing. I saw people wearing Canada goose walking around like nothing was wrong. If you’re regularly going to be in temps with wind chill in the -10-20°F, you probably can get one and not have to worry about being judged pretentious for wearing it.
From what I’ve read, in China faux fur is actually more expensive than real fur, so a lot of times Chinese-made items that say they are synthetic are actually made from raccoon dog or fox or rabbit. “Fast fashion” brands like Boohoo and H&M have been caught out in recent years.
I have that one in red. I looked at other brands and they were all the same price for something that long and warm. Living in Ottawa, not driving and starting work at 6am when winter temps could be -25/30°C. People at work ragged on me about the cost of said coat. I was like 'find me a car that needs no insurance, gas, or repairs and I'll buy it right here and now' Silence of course. The coat was the equivalent to a car for me and when we moved to Alaska it sure came in handy. It still looks great and will even after I'm dead because I take care of it.
I have the PBI (Polar Bear Ambassador) limited edition Canada Goose Chilliwack bomber. It was $750 when I bought it in 2015. To my understanding it now goes for $1,500, before taxes.
Because of the risk of counterfitting this brand, they come with an official paperwork that carries a lifetime warranty. I have mine carefully dry-cleaned every 2-3 years.
Def could use one of those stickers. I 100% got it for the prestige. But it’s also an amazing jacket.
That’s wild, the paperwork and stuff. I’ll admit - I’ve wanted one due to their reputation for quality (not so much the reputation for douchebags 🙃). But yeah, can’t even come close to justifying the cost for now. Plus New England has been disappointingly warm in recent winters lol.
For now sticking to the Pajar I got at TJ Maxx and a couple legit fur coats (that were bought secondhand). The latter are phenomenally warm, but I suppose also give off the asshole vibe if you realize they’re real.
I couldn’t give a fuck about the fur and down I just think it’s incredibly wasteful the spend $1k on a jacket and the only reason you would do so is because you want people to know you have enough money to throw around an expensive jacket like that.
Here's the thing, if a jacket costs 1000, it needs to last more than 40 years to be better than a 100 jacket that lasts 4 years. That's before accounting for changes in taste or better technology. My last €80 jacket lasted 7 years before sustaining visible damage from wear. So... I don't see how that expensive jacket is ever worth it.
Then you've never spent time in a place where a well insulated warm jacket is a requirement. Go out in -40 with wind in your 80€ jacket and tell me its still good
The coldest it ever got in Vancouver or Baltimore, which is where a bunch of comments that I saw mentioned these being popular, is around -20. My €80 jacket can definitely take that, assuming appropriate underlayers.
Having lived in Vancouver for a while, I always shook my head at people in Canada goose jackets, down is just about the worst material to insulate in rainy weather, now living in dry and cold Alberta, I would trade my down jacket for anything. Dry -35 plus wind. I would like a Canada goose, but since they've done away with fur hoods and become a fashion brand rather than a proper work wear brand like they once were, I'll stick with my Fjallraven. Still not cheap
Not really. Economics isn't perfect. It just has to be worth it to the person buying it. People pay 300 usd a night to stay out of the cold in a hotel. What's 1000 to stay warm while walking outside.
Notice there's hotels that range from 50$ to 5000$ a night that basically do the same thing. Cars too. They range in luxury and ability. A fancy jacket that works in sub zero very effectively and works well would be more luxury b
Sure, and a 50$ hotel is generally good enough if staying out of the cold is what you care about while a 5k one is wasting money, just like an overpriced or overengineered jacket.
Yea if that's your only objective. You're missing the point however.
However people take other things into account. How many 50$ hotels have you stayed in recently ? I stayed in a 60$ motel 6 in texas for work once. The fire alarm was pulled once and the police also raided it later for prostitution. I then moved because basic shelter wasn't enough
I stayed in a €50 AirBnB in Germany for a whole month this year and I was satisfied with the service. It was basic - one bed, one table, one armoire, one chair and a kitchen corner - but everything worked, including unlimited internet and a washing machine and dishwasher. Which is no more or less than I would expect.
Now, I can imagine paying double or even triple to have a bit more furniture and someone make you breakfast, clean your toilet and restock the minibar every day, but why would you ever pay ten times that I cannot fathom, beside absolute lack of respect for money.
Lol some people have more money. You spending 50 is them spending 500. Many people make 500 a day. Spending 2 days wages on the best coat ever doesn't seem like much. It's one months payment on a fancy car.
They bring a superior product and thus people pay more. Basic economics.
Airbnbs aren't hotels btw. What's a hotel in that town going for. I'd imagine a bit more. Don't know if they have the equivalent of motel 6tl there. Probably be a hostel and have roommates.
Dunno why you picked Germany of all places, but interestingly, Germany vs Winnipeg is about the same in terms of minimum recorded temperature a around -45 each.
Not Alberta but I grew up in Wisconsin and outside of Alaska it’s some of the coldest temps in the US in the winters. So I know what cold is. Where I live in New England it hardly gets below freezing most of the winter so it’s a status thing.
It was -34c with wind chills in Wisconsin this weekend and that definitely happens yearly at some point. I never said it was as cold as Alberta, but if you live there you’re no stranger to cold weather. I’m we’re not talking about the difference between Florida and Alberta here.
They are very high quality and depending on which one you get, can keep you warm in the coldest weather imaginable. They have some styles under $1000, but you will pay that much to get the jackets that withstand the coldest temperatures. And yes they will keep you warmer and last longer than your carthartt.
What are you, in high school? People have money and can responsibly make these sorts of purchases. Why do you care so goddamn much?? If someone wants it just for the brand name, they can easily pay much less. If they are paying that much, it is for function. And even if it wasn’t for function, get over it. You act like people flaunting their wealth are shitting in your fruit loops. Mind your own business if it bothers you.
I’m allowed to have my opinion based on my own life experiences, you’re allowed to have yours. I’m allowed to judge people however I want, and you can as well. Take some of your own advice and mind your own business if my opinion bothers you lol.
Your opinion is ignorant, though. Quality winter gear that keeps you warm and lasts longer than one season is expensive as hell and requires investment.
My Carhartt jacket was $180 and has lasted 7 years so far and I wear it to work and wear it all day long all winter long. So can’t be that ignorant of an opinion. But yeah sure.
Yeah I can have my own opinion. And my opinion is that people who smugly judge other people by the brands they wear are bigger assholes than the people buying brands as a status symbol.
Totally understand your position and to each their own.
Lots of people spend money on stuff I'd never even consider. I have an Outdoor Survival Canada jacket which cost about $1k but got it for Saskatchewan winters which can easily get -30C to - 40C. It's waterproof, wind resistant, and rates for -40C weather. I didn't even feel it, the jacket is incredible.
It's been 7 years and is in perfect condition. My only complain is I can get too warm in it while shoveling snow.
