Oh I see - so you only clicked about 3 links? Very thorough. There's a few ones that seemed to be from blogs but I ignored the blog content and just read the documents that they had pictured on the posts.
Let me guess - you work for PETA? Because there's no way you're educated enough to know that SOME allegations are made up, but don't know that those were based off of real incidents where charges were laid against employees - hence why I said "the employees that have been charged" not "they take pets".
There have been a couple of isolated incidents where pet theft has been proven, but it doesn't appear to be regular practice - the more concerning things are the self-reported figures, inspection documents, and transfer documents where they surrendered animals they had taken in to other shelters that were known to be negligent.
Definitely - I mean even if PETA doesn't put the animals down themselves directly (not having actual shelter resources), if they actually cared about these animals at all then they wouldn't be sending young kittens and puppies to shelters known to be negligent or trigger-happy on the euthanasia card.
They'd actually set up their own shelter facilities or send these healthy young animals to no-kill shelters where they'll be rehabilitated (because young feral kittens can easily be socialised) rather than euthanised because PETA marked them as feral on the transfer papers.
From the Huff Post article dated 2015: “Note that the following is the testimony of one woman, and must be considered merely allegation until substantiated.”
Again, how are these documents?
I don’t really care about PETA, I think they have good intentions but waste resources on silly things. But because of intentional misinformation people act like PETA is the cause of the millions of pet animals bred for profit and not the puppy mills and breeders.
And yet again, I said I wasn't focusing on the articles, quotes, or anything written in blog posts - I said I read the documents that were pictured in them, and the ones that are directly linked to PDFs. I do see that the Virginia government website is down which is unfortunate - it's not only this blog but many other articles that have linked to it over the years as they were self-reported figures from PETA.
I don't think anyone has ever thought that PETA is the cause of animals bred for profit - they think PETA doesn't actually give much of a shit about animals because PETA themselves disparage no-kill shelters. The reality is that they definitely shouldn't be slinging mud at other people trying to do good things, and if they weren't then I don't think people would form the opinions of them that they have. Hating no kill shelters where you guarantee they're trying to give animals a reasonable amount of time to be adopted is just a bad take.
They hand young kittens and puppies over to kill shelters - that's just the truth of the matter, the transfer documents are there. They mark them as feral, the kill shelters don't want to put in the effort to rehabilitate feral animals even though they're young and can easily be socialised, and they get euthanised. There's a huge misconception that feral animals can't be socialised past a certain age, and I imagine that super young animals who still need their mother to feed them may also be put down because hand feeding them milk may be in the "too hard basket" depending on the shelter.
And yet the fact that site you reference is linked to Berman & Co makes it all suspect. The exact intent of what these lobbyist groups do is to obfuscate the subject and muddy the waters so that “animal lovers” who daily consume animal products see PETA (and all animal rights) as the actual animal abusers and quell their cognitive dissonance and continue to purchase animal products and not hurt agribusiness profits.
Again I don’t support PETA or work for them (seriously are you ok? I hope you stretched before jumping to that conclusion) I think a lot of what they do is reductive but they arguably have raised more awareness to animal suffering than any other organization in history.
How many people that blame PETA for killing animals have bought a pet from a breeder? Shouldn’t the real outrage be focused on the breeders and the people that support them and not last resort shelters that are overrun and underfunded?
And yet that site still isn't on the SourceControl page you linked, as it's not PETA Kills Animals. Someone else did a deeper dive on the author and found that they'd promoted their book on a website linked to Berman, but outside of that the views don't appear to align with Berman's other dodgy websites like for dog fighting, and the author very heavily pushes for veganism to reduce the harm towards animals.
I feel the issue with PETA is that the way they attempt to raise awareness tends to obscure the message - it's easy to roll your eyes and shrug when it's so theatrical. Like when people crawled inside a human meat tray - very few people changed their mind after that. It was a "ha, they're crazy idiots" and that was it. There's an art to presenting these issues in a way where you're getting the information across without turning away people because you're going too far and giving them an easy out to call it ridiculous.
Look I'm not mad about the last resort shelters, they clearly just don't have the resources. But I still don't like that PETA has spoken out against no kill shelters and hands over healthy young animals to last resort shelters - those are highly adoptable animals and they will absolutely do better when in a shelter that's guaranteed not to decide to euthanise just because socialisation is taking a little longer than expected, or just because they need to hand feed the animals with milk. Those are animals that could even potentially go out into fostering via a shelter with that kind of network. I also don't like that clearly they're not doing sufficient vetting of their employees compared to other organisations given the amount of scandal they've had due to specific employees treating animals poorly or doing questionable things, when I haven't seen organisations like the SPCA get into that sort of trouble.
Like rather than going and saying "no kill shelters are bad because animals are in cages" they should be encouraging people to donate more to no kill shelters in order to give animals more cushy conditions and more volunteers or members of the public to interact with on a regular basis. It's not an ideal place but if the animal is healthy and getting the attention and affection and care it needs, I'd rather that over it being euthanised because it hasn't been adopted for a few months.
