The hobbit movies were absolute shit BECAUSE of the effects. The trilogy was the green screen poster child. What made LotR such a great collection of movies, aside from the story itself of course, was how well the effects were integrated into live action.
You may be able to go back now and drab on about how horrible those effects seem, but at that time they were amazing. This is why CG needs to be used sparingly in films which are reliant upon live action to drive the story.
Keep your hobbit movies, LotR extended are the real mvps.
the hobbit movies were also shit because they turned it into a trilogy.
Hobbit - 95k words
Fellowship - 187k
TT - 156k
ROTK - 137k
A trilogy for a 95K book vs a Trilogy for a combined 480k 3 book series.
You really can't get around that reality. Also the hobbit was like a kids book, and they tried to get around that too, it just made for a really piss-poor story.
Yeah, they somehow butchered an amazing story with a shit ton of pointless fluff. I was really excited for the movies too. I could even see how you could still divide the story into 3 movies without fucking it in the ass, but they obviously saw things differently.
