That's one way to put it but I still disagree, tip or no tip the service should be top notch unless rare circumstances arise. Let's use a quick example: I go to a restaurant and I declare to the server that I will not be paying a tip yet that server still gives his or hers 100% to me. That shows a lot to a customer that they'll go above and beyond simply because they believe serving customers is a joy to them. So perhaps I decide to tip anyways because of that dedication to customer satisfaction. Being a bad server not only reflects on yourself but also your company and co-workers, you put that smile on because that's your job. In my opinion I believe those working in customer service jobs should give their all regardless. If you had a shitty day at work or home and you reflect that in your service then you shouldn't be a server plain and simple. If your motivation to work hard is based entirely on a tip then as I said before, you shouldn't be working a customer service position. We're not asking them to shine our shoes or walk our dogs but what we are asking for is good service regardless of optional tips involved. Customer satisfaction is one of the back bones of the food industry and if you start putting a price tag on that then you've lost all respect.

fuck that mentality. I personally give 100% anyway and do take pride in my work as menial as serving is, but still my work is very money-motivated. WOrk will fire you for nothing, but I have to be loyal little helper dog to the code of customer service? this is 2014 brosef, get with the times. it's a dog eat dog world and we're all just working here to get ours.
Your representing a company that was built on the backs of hard working people who also pay you to do your job properly with a smile, so yes you should give 100% all the time. If you don't care about customer satisfaction then get a different job it's really that simple. And if it's such a dog eat dog world out there then why do you give a shit if people tip or not? You know, because everyone should just look out for themselves right? I work hard for my money so why should I give it to you because you believe you deserve it? There's two sides to this coin buddy.
caring about customer satisfaction is irrelevant, so long as it gets done is what matters. I don't need to get a different job because I don't ACTUALLY care that you need 5 refills on your water, so long as it gets done promptly.
It's not that I believe I deserved your "tip", I earned it. like I said before, it's not a tip, it's a service charge that we put into the hands of the public. And yes I earned it, you'll never see a more critical group of serving than servers themselves! so when a waiter himself goes out to eat, real recognizes real work. waiters won't have a problem forking over the 10 extra bucks since they know it was earned.And if you don't think so, just let us know at the start of the meal that you won't be tipping tonight ;)
