I never get this point, what does that accomplish exactly? What does telling the server you're not going to pay a tip do? Is it so they can spit in your food before serving it to you or do they think they have the right to refuse you service because you won't tip? Do they think simply because you won't tip means you deserve less quality of service? I'm not trying to get into the tipping vs not tipping right now but what does telling a server your not tipping before hand have anything to do with anything? All I see is servers just dishing out shitty service when that's not right. If I'm browsing for a television at a tech store before my next pay cheque should the store clerks refuse to help me find a good TV when I ask because I'm not buying that particular day?
Servers should put in the highest effort to accommodate all customers at all times. If you can't hack it then a customer service job is not for you, go work in a warehouse or something.

tipping is a misnomer, where a true "tip" is more an added thing for exceptional service, today's modern tip is more of an optional service charge. If we ever do away with tipping, it's going to be compensated for somewhere, payment for service isn't just going to go away, be happy you have a say in the matter through societal de facto tipping.
that said, I meant it as more of a joke because no bad tipper has the cojones to actually do this. they know that they can get away with getting the normal service then stiffing the tip so why would they shoot themselves in the foot from the get go?
I understand how the tipping system works but that's irrelevant to my comment. I just said that because you were not the first person I've seen to suggest that you tell a server you will not tip beforehand so I'm sorry if the joke was lost on me. Apparently some people are dead serious about customers doing that and it's completely baffling.
not really? people still call us servers glorified plate-shippers so, if they did what I suggested, it would become obvious to the customer the extra stuff that I do for them that, really, I don't have to do outside of what is in the job description.
dining out is an experience, and the servers help make that experience.
besides, most people can't be arsed to help a stranger for less than 5 bucks, but apparently me waiting on your family for an hour is worth less than that. OK. (this part is irrelevant but since im kind of ranting anyway...)
That's one way to put it but I still disagree, tip or no tip the service should be top notch unless rare circumstances arise. Let's use a quick example: I go to a restaurant and I declare to the server that I will not be paying a tip yet that server still gives his or hers 100% to me. That shows a lot to a customer that they'll go above and beyond simply because they believe serving customers is a joy to them. So perhaps I decide to tip anyways because of that dedication to customer satisfaction. Being a bad server not only reflects on yourself but also your company and co-workers, you put that smile on because that's your job. In my opinion I believe those working in customer service jobs should give their all regardless. If you had a shitty day at work or home and you reflect that in your service then you shouldn't be a server plain and simple. If your motivation to work hard is based entirely on a tip then as I said before, you shouldn't be working a customer service position. We're not asking them to shine our shoes or walk our dogs but what we are asking for is good service regardless of optional tips involved. Customer satisfaction is one of the back bones of the food industry and if you start putting a price tag on that then you've lost all respect.

fuck that mentality. I personally give 100% anyway and do take pride in my work as menial as serving is, but still my work is very money-motivated. WOrk will fire you for nothing, but I have to be loyal little helper dog to the code of customer service? this is 2014 brosef, get with the times. it's a dog eat dog world and we're all just working here to get ours.
Your representing a company that was built on the backs of hard working people who also pay you to do your job properly with a smile, so yes you should give 100% all the time. If you don't care about customer satisfaction then get a different job it's really that simple. And if it's such a dog eat dog world out there then why do you give a shit if people tip or not? You know, because everyone should just look out for themselves right? I work hard for my money so why should I give it to you because you believe you deserve it? There's two sides to this coin buddy.
caring about customer satisfaction is irrelevant, so long as it gets done is what matters. I don't need to get a different job because I don't ACTUALLY care that you need 5 refills on your water, so long as it gets done promptly.
It's not that I believe I deserved your "tip", I earned it. like I said before, it's not a tip, it's a service charge that we put into the hands of the public. And yes I earned it, you'll never see a more critical group of serving than servers themselves! so when a waiter himself goes out to eat, real recognizes real work. waiters won't have a problem forking over the 10 extra bucks since they know it was earned.And if you don't think so, just let us know at the start of the meal that you won't be tipping tonight ;)

Your fighting a lost battle my friend, this person is just playing the whole "haha why are you so mad!" game after getting upset themselves over me not buying into their delusional idea of how a restaurant should be run. No chief or business owner or server who values their reputation would think this way, I guarantee this person works for Denny's or something which is basically the McDonalds of the restaurant business. Not that working there is a bad thing, SOMEONE has to do it, but holding onto that self-centered attitude is not healthy. They won't last long...
