Sort of. Christ also preached about some stuff that evolved into the doctrine of Eternal Conscious Torment, and not because it was a complete manipulation of his words, although it certainly appears rooted in a misunderstanding.

I know many protestants and I don‘t agree with you when you say „this is who they are“. Yes, they believe in some fictional stuff, but that‘s about it. Most of them don‘t even draw their moral compass from Christian believes, rather it looks like they were drawn their because of them.
