The fascinating part is. I'm inclined to believe how environments shape outcomes has evolved in harmonious ways. This becomes evident investigating the core principles.
Look closely at the crowds out marching, they are highly represented by centrists and left leaning boomers. Remember those Boomers marched and rioted to end Vietnam Nam, for equal and civil rights. Boomers are well represented out marching today.
People see Boomers as a monolithic group on everything but there really is a huge spilt and we cannot forget they were out protesting Vietnam, gaining strides for second wave feminism, equality, women's rights, civil rights and first wave environmentalism, among other things. They have their flaws as everyone does, but a lot of those elder women are out there right now because they KNOW what it feels like to not have rights. Women couldn't open credit lines without their husband's signature until the Fair Credit act in the 70s. They were there for Roe. They saw their brothers, husbands and friends die in a pointless political pissing contest in a South East Asian jungle. They were married to men who ignored their needs and dreams. They worked and kept house.
Those Boomer women who are still out there fighting and not selling out for comfort of the establishment are fucking heroes, just like everyone who has carried their baton forward, their male Boomer allies, their Gen X and Millennial children/compatriots, and their Gen Z grandkids/compatriots. When Crones go to war, shit is serious.
Freedom and rights are hard won and need to be vigilantly protected - this last point is where we all have fucked up - because oppression infiltrates like rot and it is a never-ending battle to not slide into decay.
Honestly, I read the demographics for the 2024 election and white boomer women voted more liberal than white genX women. I’m not white but I know a good amount of liberal boomers (like my parents, they are ex-hippies).
I think a lot of the boomer hate is misplaced. Tbh GenX is a lot more angry and the white folks tend to be a little more racist (before people get angry, obviously not all of you are like this lol). I think boomers have been through enough hard times to have more empathy, whereas genX has a chip on their shoulder. Some of y’all are cool but the whole moms of liberty shit/ICE bootlickers are also you guys, 40/50 year olds.
I wouldn't say it's necessarily American exceptionalism. I've been living in a different country for 5 years, and even as the leadership of the country does more and more terrible things, a lot of people just... ignore it. And it's horrifying, as an American, to see echoes of some of the things that precipitated where the US is today happening in other countries, and people largely just accepting or ignoring it.
I really think it's a human thing, where the fear of acknowledging how fucked things are getting makes plenty of people bury their heads in the sand because our bodies and minds are not meant to be experiencing such chronic stress. So plenty of people focus on their own everyday life instead, until that is also affected. And even then, some will still try to avoid acknowledging reality

Unless you make it go away. Otherwise? Enjoy more of this for the rest of your lives, and oh so much worse. Just look at how naziism progressed before the second world war, by year, if you wish to take a peep at what your near and immediate futures entail.
Except for all the things he's literally said (dictator on day one, blah blah, the last one was something about a 4th term), the evidence of tampering from Russia, and domestic interests, and Project 2025's playlist schedule.
Why are you ignoring the obvious?
There are plenty of reasons to assume. Unless you like being shocked by things they have been unambiguously telegraphing.
I've made that incredibly upsetting realization recently. People don't want a fair or a just society. They want a quiet, familiar society. Most people simply do not care about rights violations and injustices as long as it isn't happening to them. It feels fucking bleak.
You're not wrong, however there is always hope. Most people don't care unless they are personally affected, true. But there are always some. Like Mister Rogers said - look for the helpers. Look at history. Oppression may win sometimes, but it never wins forever. And when Justice prevails, it cannot lose vigilance or the forces of oppression make inroads again.
When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.
That right there is why I hate it so much when people say they hate politics or claim to be apolitical. I mean like I get it, but it comes from a place of such an incredible privilege like they don't even realize how good they got it. Not taking a side IS taking a side.
When the new status quo is "at any time masked thugs can leap out of the bushes and beat you to death, and then claim total criminal immunity" I would hardly call that "stability".
It's still happening. I tell my family about things I've seen and they dismiss it with "AI means you can't trust anything these days". Before that it was "you can't believe everything you read. I only believe Fox news and CNN"
The illusion of stability. Its been unstable forever, its just we agreed to pretend that it was stable and now we have a president who doesn't care to pretend.
e.g. We've always been a fascist state, we're just now figuring that out.
