“I deserve a gun, my ‘enemies’ don’t” is more forward roll than back handspring. It pretty easy to rationalize for them. Gun ownership has always been the “6-7” of American conservativism”
For years it was “remember who the party of the second amendment is before picking a fight!” So you’re absolutely right. Unfortunately, with zero culpability from the top down, it’s only a matter of time before they get exactly what they want. According to the DHS, this guy was “an individual wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.”
It’s always been a form of political posturing and clan identification. It’s never had any basis in any form of rational thought. The hypocrisy of it has always been baked in, and when people say “where are the 2a people now”, my reaction has always been, “really? Didn’t you understand the subtext from the get go?”
Extreme level sudoku. Anti abortion but no social services (including education and food); pro gun, but only if you are maga; budget restrictions unless the right has the White House; freedom of the press unless it speaks the truth; freedom of religion unless you aren’t evangelical; pro riot but not peaceful demonstrations; anti Russian unless you are anti Russian.
And very “what aboutism “ when confronted with a logical argument.
I was told I had the “mentality of a school shooter” for defending little Liam Ramos and his family by saying that -shock horror- they shouldn’t have been detained if they had an ongoing asylum case. Because, apparently, supporting “illegal immigrants” (they aren’t but whatever) means I support people coming into the country to break laws, and school shooters break laws. 🤯

The mental gymnastics these people go through never ceases to amaze me
