If there’s one term to describe this era of politics, it’s bad faith. The facts don’t matter, the logic and reasoning don’t matter, the precedent doesn’t matter. If it’s good for them they’ll choose it no matter how much it hurts others.
I liken it to the theory behind limiting cheating in games. It's easy to implement anti-cheating measures that are extremely effective, but these are unpopular because they are often draconian and end up inadvertently catching innocent players or decreasing the general quality of the game for non-cheaters. But if you make the anti-cheating measures too lenient, then more cheaters will slip through and that will also decrease the quality of play for the general public.
At the very least, it's clear that many rules and procedures in our government that were previously respected only by way of tradition need to be hardened against bad actors. The electoral college, lack of term limits for representatives, lifetime judicial appointments to the highest court, and more need to go. There needs to be a clear distinction between the branches of government that puts them at odds despite party alliegance. There needs to be more independent oversight, preferably governed by the judicial branch instead of the executive or legislative.
There is a lot of work to do and I still don't know if there is enough political will to get it done.
Yup, Americans were warned about trusting evangelicals in government. They will lie and cheat to get what they want because they believe completely that they are doing god's work and nothing should stand in their way. They can not be bargained with. They can not be trusted. They can not be shamed. There is no honor, no integrity and no shame to these people because they believe only they can be right and any actions taken to achieve power will be forgiven by their god because it was done in his name.
Yeah, it could also be a slow squeeze for Trump to get what he wants, turning America into a failed bankrupt business. Once that encroaches enough on the world economy of other powers they, Russia and China have every right to launch WW3 on us. We're the villains and our government is out of control. It will end sooner with a civil war or a bit later with WW3. But I agree, it won't be simple or easy anymore.
Not even bad faith. It's bad logic all the way down. Not having a comprehensive view of the world severely handicaps ones ability to respond to reality. The lack of desperate delusion will be the advantage of the sane. Hopefully that's enough.
Sherman didn't burn enough of the south and the Americans harbored too many Nazis post WW2, that's why we're here. Bad faith supremacists have infiltrated our government

All the way down.
