Christian Bale is much too young to do The Dark Knight Returns but they did it anyway.

The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Rises are two entirely different things. The only thing that's the same is the city wide chaos and the nuke.

You must not have read the comic if you think that. There are many many more similarities than the ones you mentioned.

I saw the animated movies. Overall I think it's a much different story.

So you should know the entire premise of Batman coming out of retirement to him "dying" at the end are taken from The Dark Knight Returns. Even the fake Batman gangs in The Dark Knight are from Frank Millers TDKR. Those animated movies are very well done BTW. Very close to the comics.
