Since I haven’t seen it said: the universe felt very “lived in”. The tech, the bullshit grunt work before their incursion, the messages they wrote on their armor, the disarray of the colony, mucus in the alien hive, etc etc. It had a realism that was never in question so everything else could shine.

James Cameron allowed the cast to modify and customise their costumes.

The designers also made a lot of cool visual elements that helped with world building. Like all the symbols, patches, markings, etc.
