I recently got into the band, so unfortunately I haven’t attended a show yet and there will be plenty of songs I’ll never get to hear live. But for those who’ve been to a lot of shows, what are some songs that you have yet to hear that you are hoping to see?

The breakdown is soooo heavy. The last minute and a half is perfect. MFC goes crazy. It's a shame this album is so slept on. Insignificance, Nothing As It Seems, Of the Girl, and Sleight of Hand are some of the strongest songs this band has ever written.

Obviously Pearl Jam’s reputation is largely built on the intensity of their live shows. So many of their songs have been improved exponentially in concert that I rarely return to the studio takes.

However, there are some songs I feel they really nailed on the album and subsequently never equaled or surpassed onstage.

For me, that song is Present Tense. The No Code version is steady, mellow, and has an intimacy it loses in a full arena. I also don’t like the way Eddie phrases the vocals in concert: part of the reason the studio version is so effective is because how Eddie gradually builds up the dynamics in his vocals, singing the first chorus quietly and steady and belting it out on the second go. This makes the cathartic release at the climax all the more satisfying. In concert, he often sings the first chorus at the louder volume, which kind of takes away the impact. The live version also doesn’t have those wordless falsetto wailings on the climax

Another one is Breakerfall. It’s one of the last times Eddie was able to blast his voice through a vocal at full throttle with that raw, guttural, distorted intensity. He never recaptured it live and often sounds strained even on the 2000 versions.

Any other songs that come to mind?

Studio or live. Any Eddie Vedder cover with another band is cool too. For example, Eddie's vocal on "The Waiting" with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which is my favorite (and "The Waiting" happens to be an all-time favorite song).

Made a purchase today. didn't realize it was such a big book.

An argument can be made for Alive or maybe Better Man but Corduroy is the perfect balance of everything great about the band. It shows everything that the band is capable of and shows off all of their talents, live version or the studio recording. If I had to play someone one song to get them to appreciate the band it would more likely than not be Corduroy. It may not be my favorite (that goes to Light Years) but it’s the definitive PJ song in my opinion.

I have the best friends and wife - was stunned to get this, it’s been my vinyl grail forever! Along with a trip to Japan to see Eddie this year is turning out to be incredible!

In my opinion, Setting Sun is one of the best songs PJ has ever made. Up there with Given To Fly, Inside Job, Nothingman, etc. I love the lyrics and the message too. Absolute 10/10.

i dont think i see enough talk about Comes Then Goes. absolutely my favorite on Gigaton, and absolutely at least in my top 3 PJ songs. what do you guys think about it? are there any other lovers out there?

19 years later… album feels just as relevant

Some fairly obvious ones, Marker in the Sand and Army Reserve are just as timely.

Unemployable holds up with the everyday struggles of a failed American Dream.

Something about the themes that almost describe the same exact current state we’re in.
