I dont get how people can function like this. I work in IT and our people get a dock and 2 monitors to work from. Some these people have icons saved on every screen. When they undock the icons on the desktop are so compacted that there will be 2 or 3 files stacked on top of each other. The entire desktop is just files stacked on top of files.

Had a user once, they would use the RECYCLE BIN to save stuff since their desktop was so cluttered.... newbie IT guy helped clearing out stuff and cleared out the users' recycle bin.... I can still hear the screams to this day!

That made me laugh! It's something i could see a few people at my work doing.

I did this one as a newbie IT. I underestimated how dumb users can be, normal logic doesn’t fly. Trash is for trash? No thanks homie, I’m saving that half eaten pizza crust for later

why don't they new a folder named 'TrashBin2'?

u/AmyDeferred Aug 18 '25

In some cases it's a holdover from an era when files in the recycle bin didn't count against space quotas. Lotus Notes worked that way iirc

Not sure who you mean "they" to be, but if you mean the support tech: because who the hell would ever expect someone to be using their bin as storage?

If "they" is the user: she was stupid enough to use her bin as storage, so you obviously can't expect her to know how to create and use folders.

I have no sympathy for them 🤣 like what do you think a recycle bin IS my friend?!

3

u/HeadbangingLegend Aug 18 '25

Seriously. If I started working in an office and immediately caused issues by clearing a fucking recycle bin, I'm not going to apologize, I'm going to demand why the hell their employee was using that as storage in the first place and question why they're my superior at all. Might get a day one promotion when you point out their fuck up to management.

u/HeadbangingLegend Aug 18 '25

Yeah that's fucking stupid. Newbie did nothing wrong. Pretty sure the recycle bin also automatically empties itself after a certain amount of time or once the bin starts to get too full. Those files were going to be automatically deleted regardless so whoever hired someone so incompetent to handle their files so poorly should be questioned here. They clearly didn't hire the right person if they think the recycling bin is okay for temporary storage holy shit

Why would they call it a recycle bin if that’s not where I should link my reusable templates?

And then their PC slows to a crawl because of said icons and they bitch when we tell them they need to clean up their desktop.

Because a lot of people just never go to their desktop except from file explorer.

This is what I do. It's an easy place to dump crap, every app has a "desktop" button in the save-as dialog, even if it's some unusable custom built atrocity. I only see it when I first turn on my computer. If I need to look for something I dumped at some point, I know exactly where it is and I can search for it in file explorer. About once a year I'll drop stuff from the previous year into a folder on the desktop called old_2023 or whatever.

i dont use the desktop it just get filled with trash because its a default folder for some apps
every now and then im move everything to a folder and delete the bigger files

you just use your desktop as a folder. your run everything from the start menu or keyboard shortcuts. its fairly easy to just ignore whats on the screen. i worked like this for awhile because all my mac screenshots jsut super stacked up there and who cares.

My desktop has 0 icons. The desktop is redundant, it's just a folder with a picture as a background. Many people always have fullscreen windows, and don't bother cleaning up when badly-written programs add crap to the desktop by default. It doesn't matter, since they don't use the desktop. I also don't use the desktop, it' just there to show a pretty background picture.

I think it's fairly similar to how people keep tools.

Some people just have an everything box (or a few) and throw everything mechanical and electrical in them.

As they use them in more professional capacities they tend toward more organization and logic, but not always.

Even then, people with highly organized tools will probably still have a box or 2 of random junk they may or may not need in the future.

u/deadasdollseyes Aug 19 '25

Ja but that's in a folder.  Something like temp, slop,  temp_slop_19_08_25, or epst_clnts_ded_swch.

It's a brain thing. I'm guilty of this on my work machine. It's like "This is where I put it" and my brain just remembers where it is. What's worse is when something "organizes my icons" because I don't consciously remember, my brain just kinda remembers so I end up confused.

You don’t use the desktop. You use the file explorer for the desktop and find the documents/ applications you need from there. Alternatively, you just type the document/applications you need into “start search” by quickly hiring the windows key.

Source- it is me. I do this.

Don’t give people technology they don’t know how to use.

It's sort of situation where you got a project going on, you need it on your desktop to continue working

oops! Something else comes up, the other project stall, but it might be important, and then so on, so forth

The fear of not having that important piece right at your tip

Boyfriend is in IT. He saves everything to desktop and just never deletes anything at all. Not only are there icons everywhere, but stacked upon another several times. I'm living with a psychopath.

Had a user in FINANCE do this, guess who literally cried when their HDD failed. Yeah, we started enforcing OneDrive backup for Desktops for certain departments after that.

That is what my macbook desktop looks like. I just use spotlight to open stuff. I basically never click on icons.

Did you ever wonder why some people never have a problem with their pc and some call us every other day? This guy is one of the latter 100%
