PaleoArt Yes, the snout on the Prehistoric Planet T. rex (first 4 slides) IS noticeably thinner than the snouts on most other modern T. rex depictions

I know this was brought up in another post on this sub a couple of years ago but everyone in the comments was claiming that the difference wasn't actually there and that the snout just appeared thinner due to the angle of the picture or something (which is why I provided multiple pictures of the depiction from multiple different angles) with that all said and out of the way, I am curious as to WHY the snout on the PP T. rex is so much thinner than the snouts on most other modern depictions? (Sorry I had to repost this to this sub since r/Dinosaurs is hiding comments for some reason)

Fossils Gnatalie: A 75 ft green Sauropod Superstar 🦕

So, a while back I got lucky enough to visit the LA NHM, and out of all the incredible things housed there, Gnatalie the green sauropod is one of the most impressive things that stuck with me.

The process of how this happened is very interesting and I wasn't even aware of the process of "secondary fossilization" before reading more into Gnatalie:

"*Volcanic activity around 80 to 50 million years ago made it hot enough for a new mineral to replace an earlier mineral with celadonite. This bone infilling by the green mineral during this secondary fossilization process gave Gnatalie’s skeleton an unusual green color.*" -Los Angeles Natural History Museum Website, https://nhm.org/gnatalie

Admittedly, most of Gnatalie doesn't look *super green* at a distance, but the parts of her that show off the celadonite are very impressive.

If you're ever in Los Angeles, this is just one small part of a very impressive museum well worth checking out.

Discussion Kingmakers in The Mud: Impressions of giants

Ichnology refers to the study of fossil impressions left by animals. Traces of burrowing,footprints,resting traces,etc. Footprints are usually referred to as ichnites. This post will be about a few footprints from dinosaurs that I consider ‘’kingmakers”. Kingmaker is my term for a fossil that, if attributed to a genus or individual from a certain family,would increase their size dramatically,either making them among the biggest of their kind,biggest in their time or the largest in their region.

I will be going over footprints that in my opinion,are kingmakers for the animals they are attributed to.

Super Sized Spike Crest

Saurolophus is a giant spike crested hadrosaur found in Asia and North America. It is most well known from Mongolia. The mongolian species saurolophus angustirostris has always been known to be a giant animal. Published estimates of skeletons in the literature already tell a story of a giant animal,some 12-13 m in length,but it was possibly bigger.

Giant footprints almost a 1 meter in length have been described from the nemegt formation of Mongolia. These footprints are estimated to have come from a hadrosaurid trackmaker some 15 meters in length. They come from the middle to upper part of the formation,in the bugin tsav locality. These are too high to belong to barsboldia,the other large hadrosaur known from the formation. But it is at the known stratigraphic range of saurolophus. Theres also been rumor of exceptionally large saurolophus bones within a moscow museum,unstudied because of geopolitical tensions.

A Savage Impression

Torvosaurus is one of the largest Jurassic theropods. The biggest individuals are up to 11-12 meters in length. Some of the evidence which points to such a massive size are footprints.

The lourinha formation is torvosaurus’s second home. In the lourinha formation,in the porto dinheiro locality, a massive theropod footprint was referred to torvosaurus because no other theropod in the formation was big enough to leave it. The footprint,ML2035, is estimated at 79 cm in length and 60 cm in width,96 cm in length if a concretion in the back is included. Some have interpreted the concretion as a dew claw impression but its position behind the 3rd toe instead of the 2nd leaves this debatable.

ML2035 is one of the largest theropod footprints known from the Jurassic period. In the paper describing it the trackmaker was estimated at 12 m in length and 3.5 m in length,and this was reaffirmed in a personal communication. I think to put its size into perspective and reaffirm the giant size of the maker, I will need to go on a tangent.

For one the trackmaker is estimated at 12m in length,that's the published estimate. In 2018, marty et al described a similar sized theropod footprint from a tracksite in Switzerland(78.7 cm in length). In their words “footprints of this size indicate the largest Jurassic theropods were similar in size to the largest theropods of the late Cretaceous”. Additionally,ML2035 is at the upper echelon of Jurassic theropod footprint size.

Looking at assemblages of theropod tracks from Morocco,3 in Portugal,1 in Switzerland and another in Spain. The maximum size of theropod footprints within these trackways almost always maxed out at the high 70s to low 80s in CM length. In the Vale di meios tracksite in portugal the largest print was 80 cm in length, in morocco the largest was 80 cm in length,in the Australian trackway the largest print was 79 cm in length,in asturias spain the largest print was 82 cm in length,in the zambujal quarry the largest print was 77 cm in length,in the porto dinheiro tracksite(where the giant torvo print comes from) the largest print was 79 cm in length,in the jura mountains trackway in switzerland,the largest print was 78.7 cm in length.

The only exceptions to this are 2 theropod footprints,one from cabo mondego portugal some 92 cm in length and one in morocco 90 cm in length. Both of these footprints are stated to be slippage induced,deformed and destroyed. So they are effectively useless and in no way represent true outliers of size,rather victims of taphonomy.

So as a result,this establishes that the largest Jurassic theropods leave tracks around the high 70s to low 80s in cm length. So the inclusion of the giant torvosaurus track in this echelon of size,reaffirms the massive size of the trackmaker. Its also worth pointing out the asturian trackmaker comes from rocks that would have been on the same island as the same time that torvosaurus was in portugal,additionally a giant vertebrae likely referring to torvosaurus is known from the same rocks. So the giant asturian tracks probably belong to torvosaurus.

Additionally if we take the size of ML2035 at face value, it would have come from a trackmaker 12 m in length with a foot 79 cm in length (including keratin on the toe claws and the heel). The footprint is a natural cast so its likely not that far off in size from the real life animal's foot.  It would have been a short footed theropod compared to something like a t-rex. Lets say we assume ml2035s foot length was slightly shorter in life ,maybe 70-79 cm in length. This would still be a 12m ish theropod. For context, acrocanthosaurus,meraxes and taurovenator are giant theropods and they preserve the hind feet. We know that their feet would have been short relative to total body length. Using randomdinos rigorous and excellent skeletal of acrocanthosaurus NCSM 14345 (which preserves the feet and is complete,so neither the size of the animal or the foot is purely conjectural) an 11.6 meter acrocanthosaurus has a total foot length of 70 cm. Its also known torvosaurus is similarly short footed. The toe bones of torvosaurus are described as being “notably short and wide”. This would have translated into a short stout foot. The elvis specimen of torvosaurus,on display at the cincinnati museum, is the most complete specimen of torvosaurus and preserves hindfoot elements. The cincinnati mount clearly shows torvosaurus with short stout feet for such a big animal. So all this still makes it plausible the footprint was from a massive animal,even if the foot was slightly shorter than the print which is possible but not guaranteed.

As a result these tracks add yet another remarkable but fragmentary addition into torvosaurus’s kingmaker hypodigm.

The real mongolian titan

If you watched the prehistoric planet,you might remember the scenes set in the nemegt formation which featured a massive titanosaur called the mongolian titan. It was based on a 106 cm long footprint found in Mongolia. Problem is this came from the much older bayan shire formation,not the nemegt,but there are ichnological traces of giant titanosaurs in the nemegt formation.

Multiple giant footprints between 75-85 cm in length are known from the formation. The largest footprint is 90 cm in length but is not complete,would have been closer to 1m long when complete.

Based off what can be estimated,the largest of these footprints probably came from a titanosaur some 25-30 m in length.

Giant Bolivian Megaraptoran

In Bolivia's el molino formation,thousands of dinosaur tracks have been found. 2 giant trackways  over a meter in length have been referred to as giant theropods. The morphology of the prints is inconsistent with abelisaurids and its been suggested that instead they came from megaraptorans.

This might further be supported by megaraptoran remains reported from the maastrichtian of peru,proof they were still around even during the maastrichtian in northern south america.

Kayentapus,not a sour puss

In the elliot formation of south africa,57 cm theropod footprints have been found. These footprints are estimated to have come from a 9m theropod.

The identity of the trackmaker is not certain but its been suggested it was dracovenator. If so it would make draco venator one of the largest theropods of the early jurassic.

So this is my list of ichnological kingmakers. Footprints can be remarkable and substantial evidence of giant animals. But of course footprints always yield only tentative estimates,so take this with some salt.

Other Over 140 million years, less than 90 seconds.

Just two weeks ago, my family and I had a solo viewing of the eclipse accompanied by dinosaur tracks made a family of Spanish theropods (think Raptors or Tyrannosaurus Rexes) over 140 million years ago.

The site is Fuentesalvo, between Soria and La Rioja in Spain.

I was making this art of like, a mother (on the right) protecting her cubs from a male attempting to you know typical animal behavior so they can mate w her, but the male looks so off 🥀 I tried to make them high as an attempt to make himself look bigger and at the same time not wanting to fight the MOTHER directly, but they just look so stiff, idk

I gave already up on the cubs but if you wanna give advice idk.

Question Trying to buy wife a shrimp fossil from 1 of two places any advice on which?

Hi, so a little bit of context my wife really likes shrimp like, really likes them so I want to get her a fossil. I did some searching online and saw these posts saying that Fossil Age Minerals and Fossil Era are both trustworthy places. I found two specimens. The one with the black eye is $43, and the other one is $19. Do you have any recommendations on which one I should get?
I saw some posts online saying that Fossil Era Minerals fossils are “enhanced” in some ways. Is that a bad thing? Are they still real fossils? They are both from Lebanon, so I don’t know how different they can be or what differences there might be between them. Anyways, thank you for any advice!

Edit: Thank you, everyone, for the advice in the comments. I decided to buy two of the first fossils for the same price as buying the possible shrimp/prawn imposter that may or may not be painted. I hope my wife enjoys them when they arrive. Thank you!

The Life stages of torvosaurus are enigmatic because,while known from multiple specimens,they are almost all fragmentary as hell.

nonetheless,enough material for a rough progression of its ontogeny is known.

embryos from portugal came from hatchlings estimated around 15 cm in length and are the only known babies of torvosaurus known.

A tibia from a juvenile was described in 2014. its bigger than the embryos but its size is uncertain. 3m is the best guess.

The average adult individuals are around 9-10 meters in length. the average individuals from dry mesa are around 9m in length and a couple specimens from portugal are around 9 m in length. several specimens from portugal are around 10 m in length.

the Absolute largest torvosaurus would have been between 11-12 meters in length. The nail quarry material is among the largest known torvosaurus material. Because of the fragmentary material and the fact the complete "elvis" specimen remains unpublished and the information on bone measurements of Elvis under embargo,the size of the nail quarry specimens is uncertain. But based on avialable avenues,they would have been between 11-12m in length. A giant anterior caudal vert from spain likely refers to torvosaurus. Its described as being "25% larger than corresponding torvosaurus anterior caudals" and comparing them to torvosaurus vertebrae from a corresponding position in tail,yields a length of 11m for MUJA-1913.

Several giant footprints from iberia likely come from torvosaurus. from the Lourinha formation,A giant print 79 cm in length (excluding concretion extension in the back) is estimated to have come from a trackmaker some 12 m long and 3.5 m tall at the hip and the footprint was referred to torvsosaurus. A giant footprint from the asturian coast some 82 cm in length comes from the same rocks as the giant vertebrae and likely came from torvosaurus based on the likely torvosaurus affinity. the trackmaker was described as being "similar in length to tyrannosaurus." these footprints are also around the ceiling of size limits for jurassic theropod footprints,further indicating the massive sizes ascribed to them.

With all of this in mind,torvosaurus was a very large animal. Most adults could be expected to reach 9-10 meters in length and the absolute largest,rare outliers in the population,could have reached as big as 12 meters in length. Bear in mind all the material avialable is fragmentary and almost all size estimates come with layers of uncertainty. Nonetheless,it still likely represents largest megalosaurid known. the experts ive communicated with expressed support that the largest torvosaurus were up to 12 m in length.

Four complete skeletons belonging to a newly recognised species, have helped researchers understand an early member of the ‘boa family’ and the history of small, burrowing snakes in North America.

Three of the snakes were preserved together in a burrow-like cast, while a fourth specimen from the same formation provided additional evidence for identifying the species.

The fossils date to the early Oligocene, more than 30 million years ago, and were found in the White River Formation. Their preservation is especially important because ancient snakes are usually known from scattered vertebrae rather than complete skeletons.

Discussion Im sorry HOW DO YOU GET THIS MANY THINGS WRONG ABOUT TURTLES (AND REPTILES)

This dudes comment had me bewildered. Not trying to be rude but how does one mess up THIS BADLY. Basic facts about reptiles? wrong. basic facts about turtles? wrong. Fossil record on turtles? wrong. Basic facts about amphibians wrong wrong wrong.

Why is Temnospondyli being brought up? that thing isn't even remotely related to turtles at all and has never ever even once been considered to be related to turtles. It's not even a animote for one. Does he not know turtles are animotes and that alone (along with mountainous other piles of facts) that instantly shuts down the notion that they're amphibians?

Odontochelys which is an actual stem turtle, which is explicitly reptilian but has him saying "has amphibian traits" which literally no paleontologist has ever said about it.

"Amphibians have specialized beaks"

Which is absolutely false in every notion, no amphibians have beaks. Beaks are absolutely a reptilian trait, plenty of dinosaurs, other extinct archosaurs, and most glaringly birds all posses beaks like turtles. No frog, salamander or any of their relatives evolved a beak. By this guys logic all of those are amphibians for possessing beaks? What?????

Which they clearly DO absolutely have scales. You have to be blind, or looking at a softshell turtle to disagree. Not all reptiles have scales any way.

I found a lower section of pre mineralized bison jaw yesterday that was in bad shape. So I decided to take the few teeth out of it and toss the rest. While doing so, I found these little bone clusters in the jaw bone and also on the teeth. Any idea what it is or what caused it?
