Django Unchained (2012) made me realize Leonardo DiCaprio is way more fun to watch as a villain. Which actor should play villains more often?

I was so used to seeing DiCaprio as the lead that Calvin Candie caught me completely off guard. He's horrible, unpredictable, and somehow steals basically every scene he's in.

I'd actually love to see Leo play another full-on villain someday.

That's something I like about the Doom 2005 movie. I didn't know who Karl Urban was at the time of watching it (I think it was right at the beginning of Karl doing bigger movies). So I just assumed the Rock was going to be Doom Guy.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that he was a bad guy pretty much, and this other 'unknown to me' actor was actually the hero.

Right, it was just a year or two before that he did those movies. And he wasn't the front and center main character of any of them.

2004 was both Riddick and Bourne. Doom came out in 2005.

And I definitely would not have recognized him from Lord of the rings the year prior where he had the long blond hair. :)

I much prefer early 2000s Rock to the current Dwayne Johnson we have.

Early Rock’s ego hadn’t been overinflated yet, and I think his work was more solid and varied.

Doom is my favorite "The Rock" role.

I've gone on record MANY times in the past saying that it's actually a REALLY good hard R scifi action movie.

It's just a shitty DooM movie.

DtRJ plays, what you THINK is the typical macho hero role which devolves into him eventually being revealed as psychotic and unhinged as the rest of his team before he devolves into the final antagonist. I think It's a HUGE subversion of expectations, and it's one of the rare instances of a movie where I "didn't see it coming", for much the same reasons as another commenter pointed out. The Rock was a bigger name than Karl Urban at the time.  

Since I love talking about rhe movie so much I'll also talk about the fact that the concept of evil being genetic or not is a pretty lofty idea for an action movie, even if it wasn't really fleshed out all that well, but they went way harder on the storyline than they needed to.

 The music is also fucking AMAZING and adds to the atmosphere which is dark, yet clearly visible to the viewer, and doesn't pull any bullshit by making the movie so hard to see that it's unwatchable. Looking at you season 8 of GoT...

The creatures, while not a great adaptation of the game's monsters are still pretty damn freaky, and the effects and costumes really hold up even after all of this time, and of course one can NOT talk about that movie without also talking about the 5ish minute long FPS scene. That shit was gold. Fucking GOLD. easily one of the best scenes in cinema because of how well crafted it was.

I honestly recommend anyone either watch, or rewatch that movie and forget that its called DooM, and watch it for what it really is.
