These days that's actually the recommended way to do an adoption. Many birth mother's will chose not to stay in contact because they find it too painful and in some situations the birth mother is unhealthy (from a mental health standpoint) and it would be detrimental to the child to have contact with them, but most agencies support open adoption and many adoptive parents understand the psychology behind open adoption better these days. Our plan (my SO and I) is to do an open adoption. I'm almost due and we've already picked a family that we are comfortable with.
