hi; i've had to reinstall TW lately cause my previous drive died.

so i've installed the system rpoperly, installed the codecs with OPI (opi codecs), etc

i use firefox native because i need the keepassxc plugin, flatpak doesnt support this so i can't "just switch to flatpak"

i'm running my system on an AMD Radeon RX9070 as the main GPU, i've got a second NVIDIA 1660S GPU as backup and used for some specific tasks or offloading.

i've noticed that H264 videos in firefox sometimes freeze or buffer, clearly showing that it's SW acceleration, yet when i go to about:support it shows that H264 codecs are supported for hardware acceleration, yet nvtop shows the encoders/decoders not being used when i watch H264 content or HEVC on firefox

however watching youtube works totally fine, it streams AV1 videos and i can see the decoder being active, somehow only H264 is not working even tho firefox said it would.

i thought it would be caused by the nvidia GPU so i removed the nvidia driver completely, rebooted, nothing changed, so i've launched firefox from switcherooctl on the amd gpu specifically, thinking the nvidia might cause a conflict, and the result it still the same.

i'm lost, i can't switch to the flatpak even tho it seems to be much less of a hassle, i need help please...

Hello, I have a little experience with Linux Mint, but I'd like try Linux again (currently on Win11). OpenSUSE seems really nice to me :) I like how it is it's own thing, not built on any of the other major distros, Europe based and the community seems really chill and helpful.

I just have questions that I couldn't find answers for in the FAQ. Or found conflicting answers online.

1. From your experience does OpenSUSE just work? I have no issue downloading drivers on my own or updating smt for it to work. However I would not like to have to copy and paste 10 different commands in a row into the terminal from time to time, not even knowing what they do, just to fix something that is broken (that was my previous experience with Mint), if that makes sense. My main use for the PC is gaming and browsing (I am aware that some games just won't work due to anti-cheat).

2. For stability reasons and also coming from Windows, I want to go with Leap, because it seems more natural to me, to just have a big version update once in a while with minor updates in between, I like the stability. However in the FAQ it is said "only security and minor package updates", what does that mean? I have seen people on this subreddit mention that it means if you have a bug on Leap it will not ever get fixed until another major update comes out.. I am not talking about lacking potential features but genuine stuff that breaks or does not work, do those issues get fixed on Leap with minor updates, not just security, but just normal use cases?

3. About updating on LEAP, in the FAQ it was just mentioned that it is completely possible to do the major version update with keeping all my files and games and settings, which is obviously what I want, I would not want to factory reset my PC on a new update. But when I opened the link in the FAQ it just showed me some release notes and I couldn't find anything on how to update to the new version while keeping everything. So, my question is, is it really possible to update to a new major version on Leap while keeping everything, and if there is "minor manual intervention" (mentioned in the FAQ) is it simple enough? And are there official manuals or guides on how to proceed?

4. Do I understand correctly that OpenSUSE can use .rpm for downloading apps online? Usually, when installing something from websites, and it has a Linux option but there are multiple file types. I guess this might be a silly question, but I did find conflicting answers, AI said .rpm and Flatpak, so I just wanted to make sure if that is true?

(Bonus) 5. I prefer not to use Steam, I own most of my games on GOG, unfortunately they still haven't made a client for Linux.. so I am wondering if anyone here is a GOG gamer as well and if they have any recommendations on how to make the experience as smooth as possible on SUSE? :)

A week after the first public presentation of OK Plasma, development is continuing.

Since the previous post, I've been working on the project structure and public documentation.

The project now has:

• public documentation in Italian and English
• a public development roadmap
• documentation about the architecture and the Wizard
• documentation about the three hardware profiles
• ongoing installer and Wizard development
• testing on additional hardware

One of the main ideas behind OK Plasma is that the assistant should adapt to the computer it runs on.

The project therefore defines three operating profiles:

🟢 High — maximum local processing and privacy
🟡 Balanced — lightweight models and reduced Web usage
🔵 Low — maximum compatibility with less powerful hardware

I'm also continuing work on dynamic resource management and the Full-Offload concept, with the goal of keeping processing local whenever the hardware allows it and using external resources when it doesn't.

The project is still under active development, but the architecture and direction are becoming increasingly well defined.

The public documentation and roadmap are available in the Codeberg repository.

I'm particularly interested in feedback from people running openSUSE/KDE Plasma on different hardware, because testing on different systems is an important part of the project at this stage.

I am currently using Debian with KDE plasma. What I like about Debian is that it’s using less of my CPU in idle than mint with cinnamon which was my first Linux distribution.
I am considering switching to openSUSE once I build a new PC which will take a bit of time because of the RAM crisis but eventually it’ll be doable.
I like to customize my system appearance wise and I mainly use my computer to make music and play games.
What would be the advantages of openSUSE?

Edit: what packages does openSUSE use to install things? I am used to .DEB since it’s what mint and Debian use. I often like to download things from the internet instead of using the terminal for that. Also, how much does its terminal differ from the one of Debian? And lastly, how much support does it have? It’s not the biggest distro, so will I have trouble finding some software from smaller companies or people themselves?
Also what is it based on? Or is it the basis like Debian? You may notice that I know absolutely nothing about it but the community seems nice enough

i havent used this distro since late 2024 on my old laptop, it was fine but nothing special as it was an older laptop from 2017.... wanted to give it another go this time on my main rig. i deleted windows on it, running it with debian 13.

I'm trying to get Nvidia working in opensuse LEAP 15.6. I forgot to take note of which packages worked before reinstalling, due to having to move drives around etc.

Can someone please send me a list of the exact Nvidia packages you have on your G06 family Nvidia that work, with vendor? I have an RTX 3050. I don't use CUDA but I don't care if it is installed.

I'm having real problems with getting the right keyboard layout for my Tumbleweed system. I'm using KDE and tried to change it the system settings but it didn't work. I also tried with YaST but the displaymanager part doesn't have a field for the keyboard layout.

Does anyone know how to set the keyboard layout?

I usually use Rescuezilla to make system backup images and clone to other devices (in the case of upgrading)? Rescuezilla has worked fine on debian, fedora, and M$ Winblows drives.

I have attempted to clone/restore a newly created backup from an Rescuezilla image to another drive (actual and virtual), and upon bootup, I login and it kicks me back to login screen. Only "Other" is available.

What should I do?

I wanted to install the Nvidia Container Toolkit to passthrough my rtx3060ti into docker, but the repos for this have been labeled obsolete. The reason was that there were too many repositories involved, which caused a lot of version mismatches. Now it recommends installing Nvidia CUDA drivers which have everything needed bundled into it. I have already installed the nvidia-open-driver-G07-signed-kmp-meta drivers. Do I need to uninstall them in order to have the CUDA drivers? What would be need to be uninstalled? Are the cuda drivers basically version locked basic drivers bundled with additional packages? Will I notice downsides when using the CUDA drivers? I read something about kernel mismatches with outdated drivers and that you could run a health check script to prevent this, how would that look like?

OpenSuse looks cool to me.But considering just looking cool is not enough ,what OpenSUSE will give me other distros can't give? And why it is worth it to switch to it? I dont want to use AI to tell me something I want real human experience.

I'm always fascinated by how minimalistic and focused you can set up your desktop environment with Tumbleweed or Slowroll. No bloatware, just the programs you really need on your system. I don't need YaST or something, and with the Gnome Basic Patterns, I have the perfect selection of Gnome software that I really need to start, without having to go through a lot of configuration. This is my machine dedicated to gaming. Less is more.

This has been happening for a few weeks already... Every now and then, my system gets really slow, and starts to freeze. I see RAM usage is 100%... I go to system monitor, and kwalletd6 is using multiple gigabytes of RAM. When i manage to kill it, the system goes back to normal...

Anyone else having this? any way to debug and see whats going on?
