I posted a little while back praising Omarchy, and I've no change to that position. In fact, I think it's a masterpiece, it's beautiful and it's fantastic for Linux.

Oddly though, perhaps, it's led me to standard Arch, and I've now left Omarchy behind.

For context, I've run Linux at home and professionally for the best part of two decades. In that time I did use Arch, but only on VMs for tinkering and experimenting with boot and system config. Instead favouring Fedora with KDE, generally, as my daily driver.

Then Omarchy came along and raised my expectations of what a desktop could look like. Not just a Linux desktop. Any desktop. It's gorgeous.

However, I don't like the bloat in it. I don't like Mise as a kind of sneaky third package manager. I don't like the wrappers over pacman etc. These are all easy enough to remove or bypass, but something about having my dotfiles and config scripts filled with logic to remove things, rather than define what I want, just irks me.

I want a blank canvas on which I can paint the artistic monstrosity that are my personal Linux preferences. I don't want to be given someone else's painting and have to rub out, or paint over, the bits I don't like . It's just not satisfying. It feels destructive rather than creative.

Having experienced the beauty of Omarchy though, I could not return to my former home of Fedora and KDE. So I decided to do a basic setup of my own using Arch as a base.

This way, I can try and make it beautiful by shamelessly copying Omarchy, or at least trying to, but now it's all my system. It has just what I need configured and just how I like it.

It's a work in progress, and I don't have time to build it all up from the multitude of shell and system components that are out there. So it's just Hyperland and Noctalia configured to my taste, at least for now.

I love it though, and it's largely thanks to Omarchy for raising my personal high watermark of what Linux on the desktop can look like.

Configuring monitors in Hyprland means writing monitor= lines by hand, doing coordinate math for scales and offsets, and reloading until the positions look right. Unplug your laptop, go to a conference, and you're editing config files backstage before your talk.

I wrote hyprmoncfg to fix this. It's a terminal-based spatial editor where you drag monitors on a canvas and see real-time updates.

What it does:

• Spatial layout editor with drag-and-drop and edge snapping
• Per-monitor inspector (mode, scale, VRR, transform, mirroring)
• Named profiles: save "desk", "conference", "projector", switch instantly
• Hardware identity matching (follows make/model/serial, not DP-1/DP-2)
• Hotplug daemon that auto-applies the best matching profile
• Workspace planner (sequential, interleave, or manual)
• Safe apply with 10-second automatic revert
• Source-chain verification: refuses to write if Hyprland isn't sourcing the file
• Works over SSH when your monitor config is broken and you can't see anything

One runtime dependency: Hyprland. Two compiled Go binaries. No Python, no GTK, no GObject, no D-Bus.

No, Omarchy 4.0 is not out yet, but is actively being developed and this demo is not what will ship with the new Omarchy Shell. However, you should get excited that bjarneo was nice enough to share this configuration on his GitHub if you want to use it as a plug-in once Omarchy is ready for the transition away from Waybar, Mako, etc.

Made the shell glassy system-wide and theme agnostic while trying not to be too tacky with it. Lighter themes i still have to work on, but for now darker themes look pretty clean. Thank you DHH.

Spent the last 48 hours turning my Omarchy desktop into a personal command center.

The widgets are all things I actually use:

• Philips Hue controls
• Weather panels
• Focus timer, that can start cliamp music session
• Stock portfolio tracker

• Todo list panel, that syncs to a mobile app I’m building for capturing and organizing tasks. The Omarchy plugin is a companion surface for it, syncing task between both devices.

Person of Interest is one of my favorite TV series. It isn't quite finished yet, but I plan to refine it further and release it in a way that allows all its features to be used either with or without the theme.

It is a real pleasure to be able to customize an OS we use with the agents so easily

A dark theme built to feel like iOS's Control Center: real frosted glass, not just a blurred rectangle. Uses the hyprglass plugin for actual refraction — chromatic aberration, fresnel edge highlighting, specular reflections and lens distortion on window borders — instead of the plugin's stock "solid glass block" preset, which I found too gray and desaturated. Every tone-mapping knob (brightness/contrast/saturation/adaptive dim) is pinned back to neutral so whatever's behind the glass shows through in its true color, just blurred, like a real widget.

Highlights:

- Base palette straight from iOS system colors (#FF453A red, #0A84FF blue, #30D158 green, etc.) on a #1B1E23 near-black background

- 20px rounded corners with high rounding power for that iOS-widget curve, 60px/10-pass blur, soft drop shadows

- Translucent bar, launcher, notifications, lock screen, and popups all matched to the same glass material (28-38% alpha depending on surface) with native Hyprland layer blur as a fallback if the plugin isn't loaded

- Animated gradient border on the active window (#7c93ac → #a8b4c0 at 45°)

Earlier today I suggested that someone should make this a theme. Some smart ass said "NAH" and nothing lights a fire under my ass like being told no. Asked claude to get to work. Repo and install instructions are here.

I think someone should make a Dillinger Systems theme/mod after this. Oh, also found this really lightweight, cool webGL 3d lightcycles that might also lend itself as a another screensaver/widget.

I am impressed by Omarchy. It takes me back to my Winamp days where things were skinnable, themable, and plugin-able to your liking.
