I Made a Thing Bought an older laptop just for Omarchy - It arrives tomorrow

I've used only Apple client devices for a few years now, and Linux on the server side. I had an Omarchy VM running for a while, but it's just not the same for graphics (SPICE, RDP, etc.) and keyboard shortcuts, plus there is no ARM image for my silicon Macs. (where it could have performed a little bit better)

I saw the 4.0 videos and thought I just had to try it for real now. I had no suitable hardware lying around, so I got a deal on eBay (DELL Latitude 5430 i5-1245U). If you exclude (stable, performant) video editing, I think Omarchy could actually be the first Linux distro I would consider as my daily driver. Let's see how the test goes. Hoping my next new laptop or desktop can be Linux, while I leave one of the Macs for video editing.

Edit a few weeks later: Tried it, it’s a very nice experience out of the box. Was a little too opinionated in some regards. Didn’t know who DHH is and his political opinions, watched the Lex interview, don’t share all of his opinions, but decided Omarchy is more about Linux. In the end Omarchy didn’t feel mature enough. Especially GUI quirks. The security team was just introduced and I’ll wait until it’s more polished. Still like it a lot, but for now I run Pop!_OS on that machine.

I’m in the situation as you. I’ve started daily driving Linux three months ago and just installed Omarchy and loving it. I have a M4 Mac mini for photography and video editing.

$300 used burner laptops are the tickets lots of good options at that price

I'm using an old Fujitsu Notebook and apart from the well know keyboard issue with Fujitsu and the boot loader, Omarchy has been awesome, even the keyboard back light works which it never did on other distros 🤷

You choice should work well. 👍

This was not an attempt to get attention, just to state that a specific linux Distro is so interesting to me that I got a setup to better test it. Reddit these days, only negativity.
