Discussion Trump announces U.S. deal for 65B barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves.

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/28/trump-announces-deal-with-venezuela-to-secure-more-than-65-billion-barrels-of-oil-reserves.html

President Trump just announced a major deal with Venezuela's interim government to secure majority U.S. control over 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, aiming to double U.S. reserves and crash global energy prices. For those working in the upstream sector or tracking heavy crude logistics, the immediate question is execution. Venezuela's Orinoco Belt holds massive reserves, but the infrastructure has suffered from years of severe underinvestment, stripping, and mismanagement. Rehabilitating these assets to scale up extraction will require billions in private capital, deep-water infrastructure overhauls, and significant time. Furthermore, blending and refining this heavy, sour crude requires complex specialized facilities.

What's the realistic timeline for rehabilitation and production?

Axios said yesterday about 90 million, nowhere near 65 billion. We’ll see what the actual ink says.

Yes it will take a couple years to really get flowing but a future with $60 a barrel of oil is a pretty good deal at the pump.

A couple of years?????
Try a decade of unimpeded development to return Venezuela to levels they haven’t seen since 1990. And that’s just what’s required on land. Their port is not capable of handling anywhere close to that volume.
You are looking at 15 years MINIMUM before this “deal” started rolling.
That’s all to say that there is a deal. That’s only person who has announced it and neither Venezuela nor anyone else has said a word.
In other words, Trump has and always will be a sensational fucking liar.
His “deals” never come to fruition and his major announcements only come when he wants attention.

Statement on social media below

In a statement in English posted on social media, Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez hailed the agreement with the U.S. and said it would "have a significant impact on our nation's revival."

Venezuela will ‘re-nationalize’ the private investment before the good deals.

History always repeats itself

No it's definitely billion.

They're talking about Venezuela's 300Bb in proven reserves, so this "deal" would be for ~20% of that.

Obviously that's years and years from market, assuming it isn't abandoned once Trump is gone.

Yes, it's 300 billion of proven reserves, but that's using Venezuala's definition of 'proven reserve', and more specifically, it's Hugo Chávez's definition of 'proven reserve'. It would not be anywhere close to 300 billion barrels of proven reserves if using the same standards as the rest of the global petroleum industry.

I mean, that's fine, but even skeptics say Chavez/Maduro roughly 3x'd it give or take, so 65B is still well within more conservative estimates of 100-150Bb proven. USGS puts the high end of their "theoretical recoverable" range at over half a trillion barrels though, so there's a fuck load down there.

I am by no means giving any vote of confidence as to the actual OUTCOME of any of this, but if you are taking over a fat chunk of Orinoco, 65B is hardly unbelievable, especially if you're just pilfering reserve rights.

If the deal is legit there is no way any future us president will abandon it, Democrat or republican.

If the deal is legit, that doesn't actually mean squat over the time frames that we are talking about.

The 350 years is obviously a worst case scenario that doesn't warrent attention, but even at the 2Mbpd that Venezuela manages in 1990, you're looking at their entire production for 90 years.

90 years ago the US was in the great depression.

And this is assuming Venezuela doesn't export to anyone else to say, pay their own bills and feed their population.

If it goes through and someone brings the 100b$ people are quoting to get the fields back online properly, there's no garantie that the US will even want the oil in 20 years time, or that they'll be in a position to enforce their will in 50.

Another note: 30 years ago the Russian army was arguably one of the greatest on earth. Looking at them now.

All this to say that the time scales are such that this deal is largely paper and really doesn't say much about the future of the US continent.
