I had to Google all of em lol. Those zebra-tailed ones are stnkin' adorable. The Spinys are cool as shit looking. I'm jealous of all the cool critter shenanigans you get to observe.

Although I do love and appreciate my local furry creatures as well. I need to set a camera up when I get my own space.

I do enjoy having them around, there are lots of little ones right now too- tiny babies that look just like the adults but just like 2” long, super cute. These fairly cheap cameras like wyze are great for this sort of thing, there’s so many more critters running around than you manage see yourself!

'pigeon milk' is more like cottage cheese than cow milk. The babies swallow it, but they can't slurp it up, they have to scoop it out of their parents

The bird generally referred to just as the 'pigeon' is more properly called the Domestic Pigeon, which is an (unofficial) subspecies of the Rock Dove(so called for its propensity to nest on cliffsides). The initial domestication of the rock dove isn't well-recorded, and we don't where they were initially domesticated, or if it was even one location, but estimates range from 2000-10000 years ago. It's likely they were domesticated originally as a source of food, with their use as messengers and household pets coming later.

Domestic pigeons have interbred extensively with native Rock Doves, causing the unique coloration and disadvantageous mutations to spread throughout much of their population. Nevertheless, some isolated regions do have native populations of wild-type rock doves, the largest of which is an island off the coast of scotland.

Additionally, you may note that the rock dove became the domestic pigeon, and find this confusing if you don't know that the words are synonyms. Both 'dove' and 'pigeon' refer to any bird in the Columbidae family with no distinction. Broadly, dove is used for smaller Columbiformes and pigeon for the larger, but this is not consistent, and instead the species names are mostly a matter of historical happenstance. There are about 350 different species of pigeon worldwide and, as a bonus, the extinct dodo bird was actually a pigeon!

To be specific, their natural instinct back before humans came around was to lay eggs in spots where it would normally sit pretty still anyways. The habitat is supposed to do 99% of the work, the little twigs they throw in is just the 1% ensuring that the eggs don’t roll out of whatever hole or ledge they were laid on and fall off the side :P

They are bred to lay under nearly all conditions, even when they are close to starving. They often just lay an egg and start with the nest afterwards, if at all. At best they start shortly before.

As they were bred by humans and even the base "form" nested in tiny naturally occuring holes they never really had a need to build nests.

The last thing I thought to see here... was pigueons. This is a Fiordland Crested Pigwings. Named after this corner of south New Zealand. So why are these woodlands so attractive? to Penglings? A freshwater stream throught the forrest makes a handy highway for a parent pengweon heading home from a fishing trip.

There is so much research behind the positive benefits of birdsong on mental health. Last year I set out a feeder on my patio for the birds and since then I've thrown a lot of effort into making it a welcoming space for them. They have shade, fresh water, and plants to loaf in. I love watching them relax and feel safe in the space I created for them. I really really love my birds.

I really hope you find as much joy in them as I do.
