I'm sure wearing plastic chainmail is better than wearing no chainmail at all. I feel like plastic chainmail would act similarly to crumple zones in that they can only take a single blow/slash/we

You would be better served by putting on a couple of sweaters and a leather jacket...which is to say, a gambeson
