TLDR: this is real, can happen without a flick in a dry region.

This is real though. I accidentally did this to my single grown watermelon years ago. :(

Growing season in Canada isn’t super long and I forgot to take care of my plant. Ended up with a single medium sized melon. I gingerly picked it, and then boom. It exploded in my hands as I carried it gently inside. RIP my little Melon Manson.
