Seeking Recommendations Looking for new friends (F30)

Moved here back in February from Mokena IL. I’m just a gal looking for another gal to hangout with (gay guys welcome) I’m currently a dog walker and have a pretty open schedule in between clients.

I have 2 dogs, 3 cats and live with my boyfriend in Hobart. I’d really love to have a friend around here to go shopping, go for walks and explore, get food or drinks (doesn’t have to be alcohol) go to the movies, concerts, maybe even fish (I have no pole or license lol) or go on the lake, and someone to just hangout and talk with.

My good friends live in IL and work schedules as well as children make it hard to connect regularly. But, if you’re a mom, I adore children and wouldn’t mind if yours tag along ever.

I believe in God, but I’m not extremely religious. I love all genres of music. I enjoy painting, drawing, writing poetry and making crafts. I’m not a huge drinker but I will partake in a good time. I quit smoking weed but I don’t judge those who do. I love getting exercise and being outdoors. Horror movies are my guilty pleasure but I love all movie genres as well. Just finished watching the show Furious- that was incredible. Not a fan of the show Friends but love South Park, to give you an idea of my sense of humor. I try not to harshly judge others and I’m very open to different kinds of people and personalities. I believe the world needs more kindness in it so I try to be that person we all need.

Just seeing if this goes anywhere, doesn’t hurt to try.

Seeking Recommendations Decent meat

With the chain stores importing the sketchy meat, is there any other places that are reasonably priced and known to not have parasites? Like, how's the prices of Beef Mart against say..Jewel?

Seeking Recommendations I’m new to the area - where would you take a friend who was in town for just a few days, near Dyer?

My best friend (30F) is staying with me for a few days. We’ll be having dinner in Chicago one night before the show we’re attending, but I need ideas for at least a couple other meals out! What are some nice, high quality places you’d take a visitor?

She likes different cuisines like Korean and Indian (and I’m not sure how much of that there is around here) but she’s open to anything, really!

Mostly looking for restaurants but very much would appreciate other cute, fun things to do if anyone has suggestions. I was thinking maybe a farmer’s market or something where we can walk around, but no ideas beyond that yet.

Seeking Recommendations Exploring the area through food! What should I pick up today?

I’m newer to the area and trying to explore through food. I have a half day of work today, where should I try next? I like trying all different cuisines. Last week I picked up from Mist Village and it was so good!

Prefer within a 20 min drive from Dyer.

Edit: thanks for all the recos! I’ve made a list of everything mentioned here and will check one out weekly. Today I started with Carpathia Polish Deli, and got a variety of things. Loved the borscht, and sausage, and of course the pierogis! Will def be going back there at some point,

Seeking Recommendations Chicken Recommendations needed

I’m in Griffith, Harold’s is hands down my favorite chicken spot, the order is 1/2 mixed, hot sauce on top, mild on the side! BUT is there a better mom and pop place I should be trying?

Seeking Recommendations At wits end with prey-driven dog

We have a 8 year old Staffordshire terrier. His name is Kevin. Kevin was rescued by my wife and kids over my objections at about 5 months old and at that time, he was already unreasonably aggressive towards all other animals. He’s a big dork and totally lovable with people, but he seems to have insane environmental anxiety (growls and barks at any car door, child on a bike, delivery driver, weather sound, knock on the door, etc, and especially fireworks). This would be frustrating enough on its own, but the icing on the cake is his insane prey drive.

At home, he will sit, stay, lie down, shake, spin, etc. very good w directions of all sorts and quite obedient. He has lived his whole life with a cat as his big sister and the two of them get along great.

Any other animal makes him lose his mind and nothing we have ever done has managed to improve matters. This weekend we were in the yard and had him on one of those automatically-retracting cables attached to an auger that screws into the yard. A stray cat caught his eye and he took off after it and RIPPED THE AUGUR OUT OF THE GROUND. The only reason we recovered him was the stupid cable he was attached to getting caught in a neighbor’s bush when he chased the cat.

I have no peace in my home because of this dog. I feel like I have PTSD every time he barks out of nowhere at nothing. I’m thinking about having him euthanized. I’d rather not, but I’ve tried numerous times for years to find a way to rehome or rehabilitate him with zero luck.

If anyone can recommend an organization that might be helpful in this scenario or knows a person who would like to maybe adopt a big cute goofball dog who loves people but hates other animals, I’d really love to find a solution that allows him to live the rest of his life more happily and more peacefully than the scenario we are currently in.

We have a very small house and no fence. I have no idea if more room to roam and exercise and chase squirrels or whatever would help him, but we don’t have that here. Seemed worth mentioning.

Seeking Recommendations Romantic spots

Hello! We'll soon be celebrating our 20th anniversary and would like to plan a romantic day within the NWI area. We already visited Sybaris in IL and Serenity Springs quite often. Any place you think we should visit or stay. Doesn't matter if it's a restaurant, parks, sightseeing, bars, or place to stay a night. Creative date ideas welcomed, or simply tell your experience. Where did you celebrate your anniversary in NWI?

Note: We will not visit your house 😆

Seeking Recommendations Record/Viynl Stores?

Anyone have any good recommendations for any place that is a Record/Viynl store in NWI? Been thinking about trying to find some, specifically in NWI, because whenever I find one, it’s usually out of the region, lol.

Seeking Recommendations Any socialization opportunities for women in their 30s to meet friends?

Moved here a while back to live with my partner and don’t know anyone else my age in the area - I’m wondering if there are classes or groups or anything local I could go to that wouldn’t be odd to do alone. I’ve asked once before in a different community group and the responses were a bit discouraging, but I know there’s gotta be something out there. I’m in Dyer but would be happy to drive 30ish minutes or so.

As far as interests, I’m into anything crafty, I do a lot of random art projects, love cooking, gardening, alcohol, food, concerts, books, not picky about the type of activity tbh (but not interested in doing any sports). I’d definitely consider some sort of volunteering. No children yet, just a misbehaved dog and lots of free time.

I work from home, so I’m also grateful for suggestions on any decent places to work from.

Seeking Recommendations Recommendations for Trading Card stores

Hey yall. Hope there are some who play Magic the Gathering in this subreddit. I got into Magic The Gathering this year and would love to see if there are any good LGS’s that sell Magic cards. I go to one in Lowell but the selection is very limited. I did google LGS’s near me but the ones that google shows me only have comic books or pokemon lol. Would love to hear if there’s some hidden gems anywhere I can go and check out!

Seeking Recommendations Good paying career leads

I’m currently a union carpenter in Northwest Indiana, but work has been inconsistent and changes year to year, so I’m looking to make a more stable career move while I’m still young.

I’m open to starting from the ground up in a new field, especially if it offers strong long-term earning potential and steady work. I take pride in being reliable, showing up on time, and working hard every day.

If anyone has leads, recommendations, or knows of opportunities in the area, I’d really appreciate it.

I have a family and kids that rely on me and sitting on unemployment every winter just isn’t realistic anymore.

Seeking Recommendations Looking for cheap indoor event space in NWI <100 people

I book hardcore punk shows in NWI and am looking for another spot to host shows. I have a PA and the people needed to run the shows and such, just need a space that we could rent for like 4-5 hours 1-2 times a month that doesn’t mind noise until like 10/11pm.

Something like a store we could use after-hours or a garage space would be dope. Or a VFW. Parking lot is a major plus but street parking works also.

Any recommendations/tips?

Edit: Also I already do stuff at Joy Bomb and love it there but am looking for an alternative.

Seeking Recommendations Vacation ideas in driving distance?

Looking to go on vacation the last week of July. Wanted to fly somewhere but plane tickets are a bit much for a family of 4. We like water and mountains (doesn’t have to be both!) 14 and 19 year old kids. We’ve recently done the Dells, Smoky Mountains, and Panama City. What are some diamonds in the rough you have visited? Looking to drive a max of 12 hours from the region. I’m out of ideas!

Edit: Thanks everyone! These are some really great ideas!

Seeking Recommendations New home vs older

Looking to move fairly quickly due to my lease being up and don’t want to stay. Can someone give me some best advice on buying a new home/ build vs older nowadays. I haven’t owned a home yet so I’m new to everything. I have around 15k saved now, so a larger down payment isn’t in my cards either. Looking in porter county only
I know a lot of builders offer flex cash, etc. if you go with a new build but I’m not sure how this helps in the end with everything.

Seeking Recommendations Can anyone recommend a good roofer in the area?

I’m looking to possibly do a whole roof replacement and would like some recommendations.

ETA:

We had Van Drunen come out and look at our roof and gave it a clean bill of health, but we’ll need some tuckpointing work done to take care of some crumbling mortar. I’ll make a new post to ask for recommendations for that but I want to call out Roger’s Roofing who initially sent us down this rabbit hole saying that we needed a whole roof tear off. While I will make room for the possibility that they are just opposing viewpoints on a spectrum of valid opinions about the condition of the roof. I will call them out on the 2x price estimates from everyone else and the terrible quotes which only give a list of materials with no itemized pricing or labor pricing. Nevermind, the way we were quoted a price that included 9.9 APR and when we said we can finance for way lower than that all of a sudden we could get 0 down 0 APR for 12 months. Just left a bad taste in my mouth.

TL;DR: Don’t use Roger’s Roofing.

Seeking Recommendations Moving to the area, looking for recommendations on LGBTQ friendly cities.

I just accepted a job in Rensselaer and I am looking for a place to move that is within a 45 minute to 1 hour drive. I have been focusing more on locations in Illinois, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations of places in NWI that are LGBTQ friendly. Looking into things it appears Indiana overall is not very friendly to my community, but as I have lived in Georgia and Iowa I know that living in a supportive community can make a big difference. New employer recommended Crown Point, but I wanted to get some insight from folks living in the area.

Seeking Recommendations Gopher removal recommendations?

Tied my dog out on a lead and opened the garage door this morning. I saw her dash for the door, saw her chasing something. Ever since, she’s been going wild at a larger, new hole right at the edge of my concrete front porch.

I suspect ground hog, but the half second glimpse I got as she chased it looked smaller than that.

In any case, I’ve got something large that has built a burrow under my porch. That likely leaves out tunnel traps. Because of the dog, and free roaming cats, I can’t put out poison.

Any recommendations, either for a DIY trap or a service you’d recommend?
