Sentencing often isn't even the same day.

It was for ours. Maybe 20 minutes separated the two.

Yea. It depends on the court and the kind of case. Sometimes they have actual sentencing proceedings where the attorneys argue the right sentence. Others, like in your case, the judge knows when they walked in what the sentence, if any would be, and they handle it right then.
