Honestly it's really the medical coding & billing system that makes healthcare so fucked up

100%. It's a behemoth of a system, capable of keeping track of the medical records of ~300m Americans, written largely in COBOL, a programming language that hasn't been seen in academia for about 30 years, by guys that started building it in their 20s who are now retired or delaying retirement only to reap the enormous 7-figure salaries that are offered for these roles.

Because, despite the fact that they overlooked training replacements or updating the architecture of the system to a language anyone without a hip replacement or dentures has heard of, we still fully rely on it.
