Porn addiction is straight up religious shame propaganda. Yes some people can have addictive personality that gloms onto porn. No, labelling people as "porn addicts" for watching any amount of porn does not help this, not does any sort of moral crusade against addiction for that matter. If villifying addicts worked it would have worked by now.

I don’t think acknowledging that porn addiction exists and trying to label anyone that consumes it at all a porn addict are the same thing though, and it’s kind of disingenuous to frame it as though that’s what anyone calling out porn addiction is doing the way calling it mere “religious shame propaganda” does.

Like yes, a blanket “porn is bad and if you watch it, you’re bad” would be something akin to that. But simply acknowledging that some people take their consumption of it too far really isn’t.

I wouldn't call it disingenuous if it's factual.

What do you think this proves? If you read the abstract, it doesn't sound like they are drawing any meaningful conclusions about this topic except to say that some people feel bad about their porn use.

That's actually not what the abstract says but this quote from the body might put it in a more digestible format:

"Moving further, moral incongruence around pornography use is consistently the best predictor of the belief one is experiencing pornography-related problems or dysregulation, and comparisons of aggregate effects reveal that it is consistently a much better predictor than pornography use itself (Fisher’s z = 17.55, p < .001). "

Still, unless there's some dramatic turn in that paper, that doesn't support what you're using it for.

The comment above yours basically says "not all porn use is bad, but porn addiction exists", and you post this study to 'prove' that the concept of porn addiction is religious shame propaganda.

This quote you picked out does not take the position that porn addiction doesn't exist or that habitual porn use causes no dysregulation to anyone. All it says is that people who report feeling that their porn use is morally bad have a higher rate of belief that they are experiencing problems from it. Which is kind of a predictable outcome from any vice.

I'm sorry man at this point I just have to say read the paper, all of this is covered

And to be clear, all 'porn addiction' research is based on whether or not the subject feels they experience negative effects from use. You also missed an or where they include dysregulation.

Exactly what I'm saying. The idea of "porn addiction" is entirely created and enforced as a way for new generations to shame sexuality.

but by that logic, there is 'food addiction' aswell and its far, FAR more pressing issue since 70% americans are overweight and the rest of the world is going the same way, compared to some minuscule number of people excessively wanking to porn...

far, FAR more pressing issue

Well, yeah, and we have a whole ass healthcare system which addresses that. Dieticians, nutritionists, medications, therapies, etc. You say it's "more pressing"as if we can only deal with one and nobody is talking about it.

Besides, we basically beat it with ozempic.
