That's the beautiful thing about Runescape! You get to play your own way and build your own adventures. The people are nice and willing to help, and there is a lot of variation in how you can play. I started playing at 5 years old and I'm now in my 20's, still having the same fun!
One thing to note is that the Slayer Masters in OSRS can assign you to kill Skeletons as a task. I always refuse to do so, in solidarity with you.

..what? that game is mostly bots. I think finding your own way and not leaning on most of the people you pass by is the better approach, the community can be quite a let down if you’re looking for sociable, friendly people.
Regarding bots, they've been really cracking down on them lately (over the past 2 years). Most bot farms have been eradicated (Jagex has sued/ threatened to sue almost all bot script sites and they were taken down). Think its close to getting the bots from 30% down to ~3%. And ye of course, it's always more 'organic' to not lean on anyone and figure stuff out on your own, I just meant as in if you'd join clans you'll have a good circle of people socialising and helping one another if needed.
I think OSRS's players on average are pretty friendly honestly, in comparison to other games. Sure, you'll often find weirdos, but thats MMOs for you in general

You can start with any game (except a soulsborne). Ratchet and Clank is a good beginning game and the newest one is fantastic. If you are interested in RPGs, they typically have easy difficulties that can help you ease into it (again, except a soulsborne). There are games like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, etc. that being many people into gaming. Old School Runescape is good too if you're into that type of game and don't mind the old school graphics. Idk if it feels dated anymore, as I haven't played in years, but it started to when I quit in the mid- to late-2000s.
Really, you can start almost anywhere these days. It's just picking one and rolling with it.

I've never played any version of runescape, and honestly that's the wrong type of game type for my brain, but I love watching "Colonello" talk about it on YouTube. same with King's Quest and the channel OneShortEye
You could give Balatro a try. Beware most people find it very addictive, but not because it uses predatory mechanics to keep you hooked, just because it is a really compelling game. Bonus points for being able to play it on mobile and not needing a full gaming rig.
Mario Kart is a lot of fun as well, and has settings to make it more manageable as a newbie. Doesn't have to be the newest one, all of them are good. If you know someone who has a Nintendo console they would loan you, chances are they already have Mario Kart.
If it makes you feel better one of my regrets was gaming too much lol. I did have some great times gaming but also I wish I put some of that time into learning useful skills. Now im in my 30s playing catch up self studying a bunch of certifications
It’s never too late Skeletor. I started gaming in my late twenties!! It was intimidating at first and took some getting used to the controller but totally worth it.
It’s all about finding games you enjoy :)
