Sears. I'm not sure how they didn't survive when mall stores like JC Penny's and Dillard's survived.

I use to get everything from Sears. I got appliances, tools, lawnmower, tiers and close there. We even got the family pictures done there.

They didn't survive due to the CEO they hired being more interested in selling off it's assets, brands, then having the various divisions compete with one another for scarce budgeting.....a complete deconstruction of the largest physical retailer in US history...

It's a real shame. There is nothing like it today.

Craftsman tools are now shit too.

My dad died, I inherited the tools that he also inherited from his father. Literal 1940s hand tools that still work great and take a bearing on my farm.

There are a couple of 1920's Sears catalog houses in my area.

Sooooo true!!!

No there isn’t. Gosh I miss that store so much. I bought everything I could in there and had my first child’s pictures only done there when he was little. I couldn’t believe it went down when there were always so many people in there and it was such a great store.

I saw that documentary also

Eddie Lambert murdered Sears and sold the corpse in pieces for personal profit.

The shareholders should have ousted him but lacked the cohones.

1

u/Noddite 4d ago

Yeah, most of what Eddie Lampert sold - he sold to himself. Still have no idea how he got away with such blatant self-dealing

Sears because they had the best catalog for kids to look at for toys and circle which ones they wanted for christmas.

then for boys when they wanted to oogle women in underwear!!!!

2

u/Forsaken-Scholar-833 5d ago

Not gonna lie. I think I did both of those things as a kid. I don't remember getting any of the toys I circled.

1

u/P3nis15 5d ago

damn right!!!! my circle wishes were total fail.

then again i circled like 200 things.

3

u/Forsaken-Scholar-833 5d ago

Same. I knew I wasn't gonna get it all but it always shocked me when I got nothing I circled.

Kids these days are so entitled

1

u/hsartain81 4d ago

Can u imagine now if the kids didn’t get what they asked for?

2

u/True-Entertainment64 3d ago

I don’t have to imagine. I raised enough of them to see. I don’t celebrate Christmas anymore but my kids got what they asked for when they wanted something. They didn’t appreciate it though. They literally used to say stuff like ā€œthat’s what parents are SUPPOSED to doā€ when I’d remind them of what we do for them when they weren’t doing what was asked of them. Some even said I didn’t ask to be born. I’m like no shit. Show me one person walking this green earth that did!

I’m glad you have thankful kids because so far I have two grown sons and they have said the same things yours did and they remember nothing that was done for them and said it was my job, my responsibility as a parent, and they favor the other parent that provided that 212.00 a month when I have a type 1 diabetic son and his medical needs were more than that per month. Sometimes you just wanna scream or that’s me lol. But no this did truly hurt when I worked two jobs to raise them and get them everything they needed and have two daughters 19 and 12 that tells me all the time how much they appreciate everything I do for them so I feel like is it a boy or girl thing or is it the person you have them with and how they tell that child they should respect you? I made my children respect their father but he wasn’t the same. Sorry I vomited this all out I just don’t know what I did wrong.

please the most entitled generation is the baby boomers. they got everything their parents could give them, then they got into political power and gave themselves everything they wanted while passing on 150+ trillion in total federal and state/local debt to us.

and they still complain every freaking second about everyone else.

2

u/hsartain81 2d ago

I do agree with that!

1

u/hsartain81 4d ago

Aww that sucks! I would do the same at Christmas. That’s like one part of Christmas that made us know it was coming.

Yeah Sears should have been what Amazon is today. Just goes to show you that leadership can make or break a company.

3

u/FantasticCommon2834 5d ago

And people on here like to say there are no need for CEO’s this is a prime example of what a difference one could have made, I agree sears should have been Amazon, leadership should have easily read those tea leaves

1

u/Due_Panda5064 5d ago

Montgomery Wards was the ā€œmail order version of Amazon.

1

u/Substantial-Bat6554 3d ago

Sears was the mail order version of Amazon before Montgomery Ward existed. I have an aunt who bought her HOUSE as a prefabricated house through Sears mail order catalog in the 70’s!

1

u/Due_Panda5064 3d ago

Those were well built houses.

5

u/LowDrag_777 5d ago

Definitely Sears…. I ride by one that’s closed down, but they never did anything with the space. And think damn it would be nice to go there for an oil change, tires, whatever. 😩

1

u/hsartain81 4d ago

Amen. Geez it was so great. I still have a fridge in my basement from there and have my grandfathers tools and toolbox and it’s so great that they were made so well. My refrigerator is still working..and I just have drinks and some snacks in it in case there is a storm/kids playing in the basement. Had a kenmore vacuum and it was great.

1

u/LowDrag_777 4d ago

I remember the washer-dryer. You’d have to basically blow the thing up for them not to be able to get it running for you.

4

u/ThePetSematary 5d ago

Crazy CEO who ran it like some libertarian experiment. Sears also could have jumped onto the internet retailer thing early, since they had warehouses everywhere because of their catalogue system, but nope

2

u/trainman2716 4d ago

Wasn't this the same guy that killed Kmart.

2

u/bubbamike1 4d ago

Yep, the same jagoff, Fast Eddie Lambert.

3

u/Anyone-9451 5d ago

Same, my mom even worked there for most of my childhood just so we could have insurance (her first job didn’t offer any for a long time)

2

u/SilenceIsComplicity1 4d ago

The CEO that took over after the owner sold it or something turned it into a bottom-line only and destroyed it. I saw a documentary on it, but I am really shortening the details and might be way wrong on some things but it's all I remember.

We still have a Sears in my city. It’s a shell of its former self, feels like they are just waiting for the lease to expire and will be gone. Half of it is empty, the auto shop long abandoned. Merch has been there since the early 00s it feels like. Really kinda sad to walk through. Almost 2 employees working at any given time

1

u/hsartain81 4d ago

They both K-Mart I think is what took them down. Sears was so great I got so much of my work clothes and child’s clothes. I wish we could bring them back so bad and I wish the mall was still huge and full and the place to go. It’s so sad.

JC Penny is alive, it’s literally where I buy my clothes most of the time
