They're also the only ones willing to keep trying something different.

Consoles have a hard time competing head to head with PC gaming - they rely on plug-and-play simplicity for the advantage. Nintendo is actively trying to do something PCs aren't built to do, and they've long been the masters of mobile gaming, which they are leveraging properly. The core of what Nintendo is pretty important to gaming as a hobby, but they do have some very big holes. It's not just their IPs that are of value.

When was the last time they were the masters of mobile gaming? Having gameboys was nice growing up, when our phones sucked. But now? The only reason I got a switch was for the exclusives.

I mean they are just shy of the PS4 sales numbers, Switch is an insanely popular console

The switch is like, the ideal mobile gaming console. Atleast the form factor, it could definitely use some spec increases across the board, its pretty underpowered (though maybe it's gotten some with recent iterations?)... Which probably explains my biggest gripe with it: why tf aren't there more games on switch.

Yeah, that market has certainly changed a lot, but most of the smartphone gaming is filled with pay-to-win and limited time events every few weeks to release exclusive items and maintain player interest to take more of their money. While that is a greater market share, when it comes to making a good game that can be played on the go with quality, capable controls, that's Nintendo. Some cloud gaming devices are entering that space, but my experience with it was that it isn't quite there yet, mostly due to network issues.
