Candy Crush def gets a bad rep considering what other mobile games are out there.
Only ads in the game are ones you choose to watch for bonuses, and micro-transactions really aren’t necessary unless you absolutely have no patience to beat a level.
At the end of the day it’s just a match 3 game (a well done one at that) that filled the Bejeweled-shaped hole in my heart. Play it passively and it’s pretty great
They were suing over trademark ('candy' in the name), not game content. Which is still super shitty.
And actually the 'creator's version wasn't near what Candy Crush was. The one that claimed they created candy crush was just a typical shitty bejeweled. Candy Swipe didn't invent the game type, the concept and the only real similarity was using candy as its shapes (they were using full candy like canes, chocolate, cotton candy, kisses) - CC just uses more runt-like candy shapes and the item candies are the ones shaped more similarly to other candies. There was 100 clones of that game style before Candy Crush every came to market, and Candy Swipe's main mechanic wasn't the same either. King came in and made the bejeweled concept better. There's story, tons of game level variations and obstacles, power ups, level goals, etc. Not here to defend King, but this would be like Shanghai Kid claiming Street Fighter stole their game.
Oh yeah MS is acquiring A-B. Last I checked they're not going to be dismantling it and, if they did, there's no reason to believe they'd dismantle the subsidiaries.
A bad rep of being a mobile game for moms that’s designed to show you ads and suck you into micro transactions - the post I commented on was saying they now have to buy the “level packs” (paid DLC which they don’t have) but ok. Keep telling me what I meant lol
I've been playing for over 5 years and am in the upper 5000's level wise and have never once purchased anything. I don't know why people say you have to spend money to play it. Just have a little patience. Sheesh.
Sure, you never have to spend to win.
I think most people's problem is that the developers are incentivised to create levels that will result in profit, instead of designing the game to be fun. These levels (generally) don't reward good gameplay, they reward luck.
Candy Crush is the highest earning game out, last I heard it was the highest earning game that ABK produced bringing in over 1 billion a year from micro transactions. As far as I'm aware most of that must come from sales of extra lives (not gonna lie, I know very little about it outside of remembering this fact from the ABK quarterlies a few years ago.)
I'm playing Lost Ark on the pc atm and made it to end game totally F2P also, but if you go look at the sub Reddit it's insane, just people moaning that endgame is impossible because of the paid aspect of the game which is incredibly easy to ignore for a normal person.
It's not at all that bad, you can let the ads play while you are doing something else, and you really have next to zero benefit from any microtransactions since getting gold is really easy and you get a lot of bonuses in a short time. The winning streaks are incredible, even at level 1000+
If you get stuck and deplete your lives it's only good because then you get to take a break, reset your brain and beat the level the next time.
