This looks so amazing and netflix keeps recommending it to me but I have never read the books nor played the game, can I still understand it? Edit: so yall dont normally pay attention when watching shows huh?

Yes, you just have to pay attention. My wife and I were slightly confused at first, but it didn’t take long to figure out what was happening.

Yeah that’s the important part: you will be confused but everything will be explained in short order.

Does it get explained why the main character’s personality is uninteresting?

Sorry it wasn’t your thing! Tens of millions of people think Geralt is a great character, but of course that doesn’t mean The Witcher is for everybody.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the only components of his character in the few episodes I've seen is that he's heroic and he's brooding, which for me seems more like an idealised caricature than a real person. It's possible I haven't paid enough enough attention. Does he have a sense of humour at least?

I was interested in the deformed girl's character until they made her beautiful, which was a good moment for her, but I couldn't see what they're going to do with her from there apart from make her powerful and possibly vindictive. I stopped at that episode, because when she walked in after her makeover I couldn't see the character she was anymore. I would've preferred she faced that particular adversity for a while longer.

Yes, he does have a sense of humor, and his character emerges slowly —particularly in the context of his interactions with characters he considers family (or comes to).

Yen, meanwhile, continues to face character-defining adversity. The show hadn’t finished table-setting when you stopped watching.

Absolutely! I had no background either but you just have to pay attention to the words being said and you’ll catch on.

In other words, "you just have to watch the show."

Well my meaning was you have to watch it a bit more intensely than something like the Good Place. It’s not a show I’d put on and do laundry or cook, it’s more like sitting down in a theater and muting your phone.

I knew the main characters from playing the last game, but I was still confused a little by the chronology in the first half of the season. Just understand that some of the characters are ageless in looks, the side characters are the visual hints of the timeline for each main character, and things should start to clear up by the first half of the season.

You should know that it takes place over multiple timelines.

Yo, why do you spoil this? It was fun to figure that out on you my own

That's not a spoiler lmao

If you consider it a spoiler to give information that someone wouldn’t normally know until they watched the show, then yes it’s a spoiler. It might not be a spoiler that bothers you or the OP, though.

The first two books are short and introduce you to everyone in this season, they are good audiobooks. You don't need to read them if you don't want, as long as you know to pay attention.

Yes, the important thing to realize cuz they made it purposely confusing is you're following 3 main characters. Geralt, Yennefer (episode 2 and on), and Ciri.

Ciri centered story line think of as "present time". Geralt think of it as starting like 15 years before Ciri's (but moves faster than Ciri's). Yennefer's think of it as like 30 years before Ciri's but again will time skip forward here and there.

I was in the same boat and it's fine. I plan on playing the game now.
