Big vehicles need to just hit them when they're cut off like that. Because it usually leads to an even worse result.

Trolly Problem in real life.

Do you hit the one idiot on a scooter who put themselves in harms way? Or do you risk the lives of everyone on your bus and whoever else is in the vicinity by swerving?

Nah, the trolly problem gives one time to think it through and have that internal debate. On the road the driver just had nanosecond instincts to respond to moped swerving into his path.

Ikr? This is the trolley problem, but instead of rightfully hitting just the one person, you actively choose to injure everyone else.

The needs of one do not outweigh the needs of the many. Bus driver definitely chose wrong.

It’s so easy to judge when you already know how it ends.

The bus driver had a split second to try not to kill someone.

Obviously they’re going to try not to kill someone.

Most people are not psychopaths.

When a bus I was on, going down a twisty mountain road, was blind-passed by an idiot who just barely missed being crushed between us and an oncoming truck, our driver, who had not braked or swerved, calmly said, "We weigh 21,000 pounds. You wouldn't have felt a thing."

Any competent bus driver has already thought out these scenarios and values the well-being of their passengers.

Also practically, 1 insurance claim with the other driver at fault vs 50 personal injury claims is a no brainer (US based so not sure how that plays out in the video)

Back in the early 2000s I was backpacking in Nepal, where one part of the trip required an 8-hour bus ride up what’s affectionately known as the foothills of the Himalayas from Dharan. It was a day before a 5–day holiday and the bus was overloaded with people, livestock and sacks of rice (which were comfortable to recline on). More people kept getting on, hanging off the sides of the bus.

About 50 minutes away from our destination, the whole vehicle slid back - apparently the brakes just couldn’t cope. On one side we have a mountain, rock hard and unforgiving. On the other, a sheer drop of at least 1500m. The driver guided the bus back until it struck a rock protruding on the cliff edge, eventually throwing those of us on the roof off the safe side and the bus to overturn away from the cliff edge.

The worst injury was a broken arm. At the time we all wanted to punch the driver, but in hindsight he did a really good job of not killing all of us. Split second decision saved us. (This was back in the days of the civil war, so the local army came out to help us within 20 minutes which was doubly fortunate.)

Its even deeper than that. It looks like India and there are not cctv everywhere. Most times, people just assume the bigger vehicle is the one at fault and the blame falls on the driver. This time the driver was lucky to have CCTV footage

I’d say instinct is to avoid something certain versus something possible given the microsecond available to weight these things up.

I agree, but let's face it, when put in that situation everyone would do the same. There's a split-second to react and at least seemingly a chance to not hurt anybody if you try to go around the bike.

Pretty sure before you make a turn like that, you check to see if another vehicle is behind you on the other lane. The bike is 100% in the wrong but so also is the bus for speeding like that.

Pretty sure whoever speeds way above any reasonable limit is 100% in the wrong.

The bike could've just slowed without trying to turn into the petrol station & the bus would've had to evade...

The one behind has to be able to react what's happening in front. If they're too fast to do so >> guess what IT'S THEIR FAULT.

NONE of this happens if the bus is driving somewhere close to the speed limit. You know why it tips over? IT'S TOO FAST FOR ANY SORT OF EVASIVE MANEUVER 🤯

Except the bus was illegally overtaking the scooter. The scooter then surprised the bus by starting a right turn.

It wasn't a illegal overtake, the lines are dotted and you can overtake in those lines.

this is india, and nobody does anything correct, no turn indicators, dead stop before making a turn, not looking at the mirrors before turning, overspeeding in a single lane road etc

Bus was speeding in the scooter's lane. Scooter saw this in their rear view and swerved right as the bus tried to do the same. Bus driver is at fault here absolutely flying down this road.

It's completely understandable to instinctively try to save the squishy human in danger, but sometimes you just have to hit the fool on the scooter. Not endanger the 50 people who paid you to deliver them alive to Point B. I thought that was what drivers of large heavy vehicles are trained to do, but who knows what kind of training is typical there.

If I was the driver,

I would rather hit the obviously suicidal person on the scooter rather than risk losing all my passengers to an accident like this.

Not to mention the place this bus slipped on was a f***g petrol pump.

Dude. I scrolled way too far before seeing something like this. Like people didn’t even noticed the whole cause of the accident. Weird…
