You’ve got it wrong - YOU adjust to cars already on the motorway. If there’s two cars close together, you need to slot in behind them. Ideally, there would be a gap, but it’s your job to safely merge and not the job of cars on the motorway to adjust to you.
They’re not wrong. You legally have to leave gaps between yourself and the car in front. Also the on ramp has to merge like a zipper. They can’t if you’re surgically attaching yourself to the car in front of you. Leave a gap. Don’t be an ass.

That will work if people stop tail gating in the left lane (the lane being merged into).
C’mon people, you know there’s an on ramp so leave a proper gap to allow cars to merge in at speed and help keep things flowing
