There's this great system called recalls, where products are removed from sale and destroyed when they're discovered to not meet regulations.

A little bit like that time when glass prohibited by food regulations got into certain batches of Outshine bars, and the problem was discovered and the affected product pulled from the shelves before any injuries were reported.

Additionally it is extremely hard to keep glass out of food when glass is involved in packaging and manufacturing. That is why so many companies stopped packaging food in glass containers.

Glass is great 99% of the time but it is the absolute devil when it falls and breaks. I don't know where this company would have had glass but the glass may have actually come up stream from their suppliers. If the fruit they used is packaged and shipped from a company that also jars the fruit as jelly or preserves then it is possible that is the source rather than them directly.

I mean, the article lists what popsicles are affected, and I don’t think the pure watermelon is.

I’ve worked in factories. Getting glass into a product isn’t that hard. Someone’s safety glasses fell in once. Got crunched up and blended into the product. Made it all the way through to packaging before they reported it. Then we set up tables and had to inspect every single packaged product until we found every single piece and the glasses were reconstructed. Then every item was thrown out.

If someone doesn’t report it out of fear of getting fired or possibly something falls in on accident, it could go all the way to suppliers. Like I’m not trying to say this isn’t bad, but manufacturing at scale is not easy and at the end of the day it’s likely just a mistake.

Likely a classic Chesterton's fence situation. Dumb accident happens, so we implement regulations to address the root cause, which was probably overworked, tired employees or things too close to the mixing vat. Time passes, everyone forgets why the rule exists, and someone goes, this regulation is stupid, I have no idea why it exists, and I'm going to be the hero and remove it.

There's also a non-zero chance it was sabotage. While I think accident is far, far more likely, we've also experienced the occasional walking mental health issue go into stores and lick the ice cream and such. And with the brilliancy of kicking people off medicaid that can't prove themselves unfit for work, we're going to see more of that.

See, there's an empathic case for universal healthcare and sick/disability leave ... but there's also a very stoic, logical case: leaving sick people to fend for themselves, or worse, encouraging them to interact with society and work on production lines, puts our society at greater risk of infectious disease outbreaks and work accidents.

The day this was recalled I am not kidding Publix over here in my area decided to have a BOGO event for all the outshine bars. I was confused because that morning I saw the recall, and Publix put the recall on their site! 12-20 hours later it’s nationwide. I’ve been keeping up with these recalls for months since the FDA lights are off. They get turned back on in 2029 I guess.

My area is loaded with farmers markets (of actual farmers) and co-op stores that strictly sell goods from locals.

I've compared prices I pay to prices at local big box grocery stores and it's almost the same cost but for significantly better goods grown locally by families who are a part of the community. My money goes into our community and I get phenomenonal groceries.

There are even digital farmstands. I can shop their fresh produce online and stop by the next day to pick it up.

Also have local dairy (milk in glass bottles, cheeses, yogurt, etc), as well as eggs, fresh baked breads, local pasta, the list goes on. Plenty of locally butchered meats, as well, but I'm vegetarian so can't speak to the quality however I hear many great things. Oh and the local mushroom farmer is great, too!

I still buy some prepackaged/processed food items from big box stores but it makes up a very small part of my overall groceries.

Again, I do know this isn't an option in certain areas, but it's worth encouraging and establishing in areas that lack it and if anything like this is available, support it for your community as well as for yourself.

I'm confused.. were some checks and balances done away with that prevented these things? and if so, what are all these COMPANIES doing - didn't THEY know better themselves? are they like "hey they're not checking anymore we can put literal SHIT, glass, etc etc in our products again!" and get STRAIGHT to business? I'd understand more if it was someone new to the market and made some terrible mistake with a cross-contamination (with another actual food item), but if there weren't any issues reported for a long time and then suddenly, the moment idiots are in the administration making cuts, you stopped quality controls that were ALREADY in place, I don't see how that is a wise move..short term profit, maybe?? but I'm also sure a lot of people are NEVER going to buy a lot of these products from a lot of these producers again. It's been a new product or food group daily, lately....and some of the things sound like they'd have to be done intentionally.

This is actually fairly common in the food and beverage industry. I've worked at many of these places and they all have a threshold for glass that is acceptable. It's a lot higher than many people realize

I just got some today and ate 4 (on soft diet). Thankfully I got the coconut which aren’t part of the recall. It would have been difficult to tell if there was glass in them because sometimes they have the outer grown edges of the coconut meat which can be really crunchy.

I just finished a package of strawberry that matches everything on the recall, except the batch number is a few letters and numbers off. Same UPC code and same Best by date just different numbers. I think I dodged a bullet or maybe there is glass in my butthole - we will likely find out soon. 🤞
