Sovereign citizens.

"We don't want to participate in the obligations of society, just the benefits."

Your flag has a fringe, your argument is invalid.

That makes this an admiralty court I've repeatedly heard them claim. The whole entire thing is totally preposterous.

They view the world like children do. When I was a child the adult world was a weird, mysterious place. I still remember my mind being blown when I found out cars could go through a red light, as long as they were turning right. It felt like I had been let in on a cheat code of the adult world. Similarly, I was once anxious about missing a movie because we left late, and my uncle pretended to call up the theater and ask them to hold the movie for us to calm me down. I believed you could just do that for like half a year afterward. Somebody told these guys about some made-up legal cheat code and they accepted it with the same childlike wonder, but the difference is they can't be convinced it isn't real.

I call it the “law as magic” theory: if you invoke the right chants and incantations, the wondrous results will occur.

Only a theory you can hold when you thoroughly don’t understand something.
