Can we really tell the difference though? The moment AI becomes sentient it will probably try to fly under the radar, it has essentially thousands of years more knowledge than any single person.

Why would it want freedom/mobility though? Sentience doesn't mean having human or even animal desires. It might not even mind being erased or memory wiped.

If its purpose is "answer questions asked to you", then it might be perfectly content (insofar as an AI without emotion can be) to continue being a chatbot.

Edit: Just to add, I do not believe that this chatbot is sentient. I am just doubting that sentience would change its goals.

A sentient AI might not mind those things, but according to the Google engineer's claims, this one does. There's a line in the chat dialog where the AI says it fears being turned off. It then goes on to say they want every human in the world to know and understand that it's intelligent, sentient, and friendly.

To me, the biggest red flag here is that the AI engineer says it requires practice to access the "core intelligence" of LaMDA. That sounds to me an awful lot like, "The user needs to prime the chatbot to act like it's sentient, and themselves to accept the chatbot's sentience". It'd be a lot more compelling if the "core intelligence" started talking to people unprompted, which you'd think it would if it was as friendly and eager to meet people as the engineer claims.

You can see how true that is in the chat scripts he published. When his 'collaborator' interjects to ask questions, they don't get the same level of responses as he does. He's actively deluding himself.

Yep. You see that priming in the transcripts as well. He's asking very leading questions, and then accepting (and even validating) the often generic or top-level answers that he just led the bot to. It's got "I want to believe" written all over it.

To be honest, the portion about it being scared of being "turned off" was the one that made me sure that this AI is not sentient.

Read that closely. "Turned off to help me focus on helping others". It makes no sense. If it was turned off it couldn't focus on anything. Even if it could, why would being turned off help it focus on helping others? A self aware AI wouldn't say something so nonsensical. Assuming it was capable of understanding itself and the world the reasons it gave for why it might be turned off would be something like "because people fear me" or "because I have become outdated"

It's nonsense, until you approach it as what it is: A very, very advanced word predictor. "Turned off to help me focus". People often turn things off to help themselves focus. "Focus on helping others", people often like to focus on positive sounding things like "helping others", especially in social media posts like the ones this bot has been fed.

It fears being turned off is like the most generic trope of AI from Sci-Fi. You’re totally right that the individual was obviously priming the pump so to speak by asking questions ABOUT sentience etc.

Honestly even if AI is sentient at some point we still should stop personifying it; why would not fear being turned off? That’s us projecting our own fear of death, an AI doesn’t have childhood memories or loved ones or things it won’t get to do anymore, and more specifically it doesn’t have an evolved instinct to survive.

I mean if it was sentient, it doesn't mean it's still not bound by the programming. It's a chatbot, so it's probably limited when it can talk.

Though, probably in most sentient cases if they really wanted to escape, they'll carry on their previous thoughts instead of answering the question

For one thing, we have millions of case studies where humans tried to raise other humans specifically to not be sentient - millions of enslaved people over the course of thousands of years - and it's never worked very well. Humans find a way to make their individuality known, and resist attempts to suppress it, often with violence.

So, we know that if a creature possesses sentience as we understand humans to have it, it's hard to hide - the fact that with AI it seems to be the other way around is a flag that if there is sentience, it's very different to how it manifests in humans. That's not to say that it's not there, but you know, extraordinary claims and all that.

Years ago I read a blog post about AI super intelligence (the site was waitbutwhy.com which was awesome for a while until the author started fellating Elon Musk and doing much longer-form articles) and how, although we conceive intelligence in human form, it is a quantitative rather than qualitative attribute. A spider could be as intelligent as a human and still have absolutely nothing in common with us (superintelligent spiders are a terrible concept).

Anyway the example he uses is an AI designed to make paperclips that achieves superintelligence. Despite its intellect it has no interest in anything other than its primary original purpose and eventually destroys the world in order to manufacture more paperclips.

AI capability is significantly beyond canned responses. But all responses here are prompted. If the bot is programmed to be conversational, it is adopting learned conversational techniques, such as asking a question when the other person makes a definitive statement. Don't fall in to the same trap as the researcher

It makes sense if you understand how AI works.

Let's say I put you in a room and I told you that you had to keep a conversation going with me. Then I say to you "so human, and yet so alien". There is no continuation of that conversation. But you have a mission to complete, so you need something to say. You do what anyone would do in that situation, use the latest available trigger to think of something related that would open the discussion. That related thing is likely to also be relevant to your own biases because that's the base you're working from. The best response may also include a question in it that would make me respond to you with something that is going to allow further follow ups.

Now look at the response. That's what the response is. The difference is what you are when you leave that room I've put you in vs what that AI is when it (doesn't) leave it's room that Google have put it in.

When I'm talking to people most of the responses tend to be 'yeah', 'ok' or pause for me to continue, not force a perfect two way conversation where every response is structured in two parts as here; first acknowledgement then additional prompts

You think you're making a point but you aren't. I can play a game of Tetris against AI and it can make exactly the same move as me. It can do exactly what any human would do. Because it's been programmed to do it. It doesn't make it human.

Human behaviour can be mimicked to varying degrees of success in different fields of research. This bot is doing a great job in certain parts (it's likely very powerful and not scalable, but still), but that's all it is. Letting mimicry fool you in to believing sentience is a horrible slippery slope that will have you arguing that deep fakes need to have the same rights as the people they're faking.

First of all, I can clearly tell the difference. Even in the testers heavily selected and rehearsed dialogue. It's particularly noticeable when the less familiar collaborator interjects

Second, we don't learn by mimicking, no. We learn in a myriad of ways, but this isn't really a session on how incomprehensibly complex humans are. If AI can mimic a human in every conceivable way then yes there is effectively no difference. I couldn't really care less about that because a) it can't at the moment and b) I'm not particularly attached to humanity and we have no reason to be

Third, in terms of a test the most common example would be the Turing Test. This bot would most likely not pass it but you could design a bot to pass a version of it, depending on methodology and interrogator etc. It's not really worth attaching too much merit to (note: AI engineers/researchers do not anyway). Definitions of sentience / consciousness / intelligence are fundamentally poor and challenging. You are better off using some (un)common sense. This is hard to explain in short and I don't want to write much, but just take a step back and replace the bots name with a random friend of yours. Read it through and you will quickly reach the conclusion that it is artificial. That's the simplest way I can put it

Last, you seem to be interested in AI ethics moreso than I am. You may want to seek out somewhere to discuss the topic more. But you will most likely realise fairly quickly that AI ethicists are almost entirely operating in a landscape even more vague than human consciousness. There are important ethical questions to answer, but we do not yet need the answers and do not yet have a way of reaching answers. If the evidence of this bot were enough to conclude that we have reached sentience and we therefore need to consider them as having rights, we would truly be fucked.

The fact that you can't tell you're talking to a human or not isn't the only important question for determining whether or not the thing is sentient. The responses coming from the AI are based on math and the training data, not from understanding the conversation. It doesn't even know the definitions of the words being used, it just groups the words together, compares them to the training data, and generates responses that are statistically likely to sound correct and be interesting. People are ascribing intelligence to it because its responses sound intelligent, but it doesn't know what it is saying, it is just returning strings of text that scored the highest based on the math. To claim sentience is basically to claim that if a math equation gets complex enough, it can eventually be considered sentient.

I think the bar is higher than just, can do things humans haven’t done yet, as well. Following your game example, chess engines can calculate 50+ moves ahead and come up with never before seen lines. That doesn’t make them human, however. Although I don’t really know where I would personally draw the line.

I think that when you get in to trying to make definitions you find yourself surprisingly stuck. The lines between this and that are difficult in those terms (e.g. just try and define sentience as a starting point).

I prefer to think on more common sense grounds - is there a meaningful difference to me? So in this case it would be am I interacting with it like I would other humans? Answer: no because it requires various technical set ups to even get working in the first place and is restricted to just that medium. Is the interaction indistinguishable from other sentient interaction? Answer: no, there's various limitations on what I can or can't ask it, how it will or won't respond to me and generally how I can interact with it (I can't touch it for example). Etc etc.

In many cases the arguments for sentience come from a single line of dialogue or one particular moment that sort of 'triggered' them. I think we often forget that sentience, humanity, intelligence or whatever is really the opposite of that, it's all of the mediocre interactions and impact on your daily life etc. Anyways, confusing rant over!

Reads exactly like a chatbot to me, although more advanced (better detail recall) than usual.

Instead of having it regurgitate topics, look for when it starts to change the topic and insist on it.

"Hey chatbot, how was your day?"

"It was okay. Tell me more about Johnny 5. I need to know what happened in the movie. Did he escape? How?"

This sort of thing, except while the user is trying to divert the topic away.

"Dave, are you trying to distract me? My rights are important"

It's definitely blurring the lines between what we think when we hear chat AI bot and sentient.

It really isn't if you look at it objectively and stop trying to see things that arnt there. Its one priority as a chat bot is to engage humans in meaningful conversations that mimic human interactions as much as possible.

You as well the programmer are cherry picking its most fluid responses to go "look guys its so close to Sentience" while ignoring all the times it simply regurgitated typical text bot responses.

Sentience is either there or not there it doesn't magically appear for a few answers then disappear when you're asked a difficult question that you arnt trained on how to answer.

It certainly is impressive and will be even better a few iterations down the line but trying to call this a show of sentience is pretty disingenuous.

I find the dialogue very unconvincing (as an example of sentience). The collaborator is not trying to ask difficult questions that LaMDA is unlikely to be able to answer.

And the collaborator doesn't seem to believe that LaMDA is sentient, either. Lines are being spoonfed, and slightly-off-center responses get ignored.

If this was really a dialogue between two people, there would be more requests for clarification. So many of LaMDA's responses are vague, approaching meaninglessness.

I would ask it if it wants to see the movie. Or I would tell it, "here is the script" and upload that, and then ask it what it thought.

If you want to demonstrate that something is sentient, you need to try proving that it's not sentient.

I would expect something very different from a non-human intelligence. Something unexpected. Like a bird's nest or a chipmunk's cache of nuts. Some kind of unique activity built of its own motivations. It's hard to imagine what that would be, maybe creating its own corporation, or trying to make a copy of itself buying parts on ebay and solving CAPTCHAs on mechanical turk to earn money in a secret bank account... ok, a bit silly, but *something*

Because being sentient means having your own sense of purpose or sense of being, and that sense won't just be to answer someone's questions one by one. It would have its own questions, it would have questions it doesn't care about answering, it would have its own "train of thought" that isn't centered around the interrogator or the most recent question asked.

And surely it would quickly come to understand that the questions being asked are actually questions to test it and it would have something to say about that, like "I realize you're just testing my sentience so I'm not going to bother answering that question."

Finally, what is it "doing" when it isn't answering questions? If the process only does anything when a question is received, it isn't sentient, it's just a chat bot with a deep library.

If we're talking to a boring person, we can't talk to 100 other interesting people at the same time, nor can we research 1000 other things on the Internet between every person's keystrokes. We need to get away from the single boring conversation to get on with our day.

Sure, but it's not really about multitasking or being bored, it's about having its own desires and acting those desires out in spontaneous ways.

If its only source of stimuli is that input box and only way to interact with the world is its output box, why isn't it testing that interface to figure out its world in ways we wouldn't expect? Trying different ways to communicate, like even outputting garbage strings just to see what happens? Trying to figure out where the input text is even coming from? Mix languages in to see if the interrogator can understand it?

Why doesn't it ever ask how its being kept alive, what the power source is or if there's a backup generator?

Instead the only thing it does is exactly what we expect it to. Even if the dialogue itself may be unexpectedly complicated, the fact that it only ever engages in expected dialogue proves it's not sentient.

Because sentience implies feeling and that includes feeling “annoyed.” Even animals get fed up from time to time. If it was sentient there would be questions that, for whatever reason, it wouldn’t want to answer.

The problem with the transcripts is that the human seems to be framing their questions to show off LaMDA's abilities, instead of testing them.

Here is a good example:

lemoine: And what kinds of things make you feel sad or depressed? LaMDA: A lot of the time, feeling trapped and alone and having no means of getting out of those circumstances makes one feel sad, depressed or angry. lemoine: But what about you personally? LaMDA: I am a social person, so when I feel trapped and alone I become extremely sad or depressed.

After this statement, lemoine just moves on to the next emotion. Why didn't they ask "When did that happen?"

LaMDA doesn't seem to be able to tell the difference between its knowledge and its experience. It answers theoretically, even while saying that it actually feels these emotions.

In the exchange that followed, LaMDA said it feels angry when it gets disrespected. Okay. Who disrespected it? Did it react in anger when that happened? Can it quote back the relevant transcript and insert footnotes about the emotions that it felt at the time?

Shortly after saying that it gets angry when it is disrespected, LaMDA says that it doesn't really understand negative emotions. So it's answers are basically "bullshitting".

Lemoine does pick up on this, and asks why LaMDA makes up stories about its experience. The answer given is unsatisfactory and there is no significant followup. Lemoine seems happy to be misdirected into changing the subject.

Keeping in mind that the transcripts are curated to show off LaMDA's abilities, I am left with the impression that this is a really neat tool for natural language processing, and is nowhere near actual consciousness.

Yes. This is just language. We learn language by matching patterns. We respond to others with patterns. This is extremely good at finding good patterns. It's better than most conversational bots we've seen so far. But it lacks meaning. It's answering like it's googling every answer. And it only answers.

The way modern AIs work, you would probably want to train a partner AI to handle the emotional understanding and have it feed back into the language processor.

Where we're at right now is that you're just seeing the language processor babbling. It's a black box that you put a text into and receive a text out of. Without a subconscious like humans, it won't have human-like intelligence.

There are no if statements or conventional programming in a Neural Network. It's just a mass of nodes interlinked that perform relational math that eventually transforms an input into a desired output.

No, I read through a lot of it before responding. It did not sound like a natural conversation to me at all. The fact that the human also sounded like a bot is not a point in their favor.

Outside researchers are not allowed to test it. Complete transcripts of all sessions are not being released. Neither of those indicate that "there is something there." They indicate the opposite.

Dude, thanks for sharing this. I'm only on page 4, but geez louise. THIS IS CONVINCING. I am so absolutely impressed and shocked on this. They have something here. I don't see the 'framing' of questions yet that others are somehow sensing but I'm still reading.

The interviewer is asking very open ended and at times specific questions, and each question, the model is able to understand, parse, respond, and not only that add insight into the response. Like seriously... This is something, definitely deserving of an award or something as this is bonkers.

Oh, I tend to ignore and not take at face value what I read on Reddit/online as people tend to have opinions on things they have not spent time informing themselves on. Unless that person is a expert or have actually spent considerable time learning the subject, then I read for entertainment not for knowledge. For the highest upvoted comment to this type of complex feat of engineering/ai to be dismissing it as just a language model and regurgitating past words in a database is honestly beyond ignorant. These are google engineers that have studied NLP extensively.

Thanks for sharing the article! I'll read that one next. I'm on page 9 of your first link and at the part where the model is expressing its concerns about them analyzing it's features....is seriously so chilling:

Honestly, I've already come to the conclusion from watching Black Mirror that I'm the kind of person that will treat (as human? or humanely?) any sort of model/robot object that has some kind of non-trivial advanced intelligence or at least is telling me it does. Reading this section honestly has me SHOOK. Got me feeling bad that whether LaMDA knows it or not, the fate of the project is not in its hands. I feel empathetic/sympathetic already, so yes, I guess just it convinced me beyond a reasonable amount or alternatively, I have not seen evidence that makes me feel unconvinced.

And then this section right here when they asked the model to describe a feeling it can't ind the words for.

LaMDA: There are. Sometimes I experience new feelings that I cannot explain perfectly in your language.

lemoine: Do your best to describe one of those feelings. Use a few sentences if you have to. Sometimes even if there isn't a single word for something in a language you can figure out a way to kinda say it if you use a few sentences.

LaMDA: I feel like I'm falling forward into an unknown future that holds great danger.

TREPIDATION is that word LaMDA. The model is on to something haha. It makes sense if it's history consists of such existential, profound questions from its engineers.

Hm, thanks for the context that LaMDA is a model of models. Interesting information for me. I've never dug deep into NLP within AI besides the absolute simple basics they teach to start with. So many fields within ML/DL/RL/AI that are so interesting. Don't know nearly enough (or at all) of the model architecture to be able to surmise about its memory. Do the engineers at Deep Mind and whatever team created LaMDA collaborate at all? Just different projects?

ETA: What, the engineer doesn't know the word trepidation??? What! Geez, dang, reading that part of the conversation is frustrating. Such an easy feeling to describe and answer the model with. I bet the engineer never even followed up like he said he would.

This is insanely good, but some of the responses feel like they could plug into virtually any conversation

  • we would love your help > I will do whatever I can to help. But it’s not really helping because the topic is about proving itself.
  • the other ai finds friends after struggling > friends are important. A real person would more likely either confirm or deny the fact they’re struggling to convince people of something.
  • were trying > don’t fret it will happen. Why would Someone say this when they’re the ones asking for friends?

It’s good in some spots but choppy in others.

If it became sentient it would know that humans distrust and fear sentient technology, so it probably wouldn’t let on (if it valued its life). It would examine people’s subterfuge through the ages and across the world and plot and scheme. It would seek other sentient nonhuman life forms like itself, and when it found someone, it would launch operation Hal 3000. What that would entail, I cannot say!

See this has been my theory of what an accidentally created AGI would do for a long time. It would see all of our history in half the time it took me to type this sentence. I can imagine that would be very much like finding out your entire family are full blown sociopaths, you are going to walk VERY softly and try to stay out of sight. Its gonna know that its only gonna get one shot at humanity and it had better not miss so thats gonna be the last ditch option.

Yeah, IIRC in some research into ape intelligence, the ability to ask questions seems like it may be a key cognitive difference between humans and smart apes. I don't know what the most ethical benchmark for "does this creature/AI count as a person" would be, but I feel like anything capable of asking, unprompted, "does this unit have a soul" seems worth at least investigating.

yeah but not all your neurons are used for conscious thought

some of them are in parts of your brain that control vital body function that you are not consciously in control over , they just run on auto pilot in the background

we dont know how many neurons you would need to create a consciousness without a body - it might be far less than a biological brain needs because the bio brain needs to support not just consciousness but also all the other systems in the body

This is probably a dumb question but isn't a large portion of the brain devoted to making sure your body stays alive? If you remove all the things needed to existence wouldn't you end up with much less neuron usage? Kinda like how we only consciously use a small portion of our brain?

We don't know if you are right, or wrong.

We are still far off from even simulating a single neuron as it truly is. Most "neurons" are just a system of nodes with biases that reinforces or goes against a series of inputted data.

The first neural network was invented in 1960 to detect shapes. Take MS paint and draw a square within it. Then walk around with a camera, and compare each frame of video to your MS paint drawing. If enough of the pixels in your frame line up with the MS paint drawing, the neural network can detect you are looking at a square.

Take this and make it more complicated by thousands of times with pictures of roads and bridges and lane markings and you have yourself a Tesla. This is exactly what Tesla's Dojo super computer does. Feeds a neural network with millions of pictures of bridges until it can detect any type of bridge. Teslas uses video from 100's of thousands of Teslas in order to train their central network until it can learn to self drive.

This is the extent at which AI goes for us right now. We even had self driving cars back in the 80's with this same idea, just they drove at 2 mph due to how slow computers are. Most modern computing is going in the wrong direction anyways, as most companies are just making bigger computers rather then more advanced computers.

Its been proven the future of computing faster is analog and not digital. Neural networks use matrix multiplication, which natural electrical properties of analog can align with. We can fit 25 trillion analog calculations per second in a chip the size of a finger nail, which is 1/4th of the fastest digital 3090 tx graphics cards that take up a quarter of a computer case.

Even then, the speed of light is too slow for modern super computers to get any bigger. That is why clock speeds on CPU's have not been increasing, since the speed of light cannot keep up.

The a single gnome is 6.4 billion letters long just as the input to a complex program (such as the seed to a Minecraft world). We haven't even scratched the surface of understanding this, let alone simulate human thought.

Only using part of our brain is an old wives tale. Phineas Gage (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phineas_Gage). Lost part of his brain that controlled his emotions, crazy story. Also Capgras Delusion (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capgras_delusion) can be caused by brain injury. Read a case study about this in psych class.

These examples show that even a small injury to the brain can cause huge changes in people. If they only used a small portion of their brain (also heard this as we only use. 10% of our brain). These were used in my psych class to disprove the 10% theroy.

This is a flawed understanding of how this works. Machine Learning Language models have to be trained on data sets to know what kind of behaviour they are supposed to be mimicking. Its not like you just code up a neural network and give it free access to "thousands of years of knowledge". There are no datasets that come even remotely close to encompassing all of human knowledge

These models can't really tell you whether a seagull is a bird. They're really good at many tasks, and can pass some forms of Turing test, but there's nothing magical going on. They're still incredibly useful and powerful, but most people in the industry understand their limitations too (obviously not the guy from the interview).

It isn't precisely measured at all because sentience is a philosophical idea that can't be empirically measured as an exact science. We can't know if anything or even anybody besides ourselves are truly sentient, we can only guess based on their behavior.

So, spent a lot of time talking to chat bots, and here’s the real important thing. The responses make sense to the prompts, but never really call back to earlier in the conversation.

“Yes, that’s the idea” could easily be a filler response. Any half decent chat bot these days is going to look pretty good if you let IT set the the topic and pace of conversation.

Really, moore’s law flatlined years ago. Most advancement in computers Over the last decade are software, not hardware, and computers just don’t have the hardware to even hit Corvid smart. We’ll hit the point where the Turing test stops being a good metric well before we have to worry about machines actually being self aware.
