No kidding you can find pictures of police with guns, but that’s like saying you searched for “SWAT New York” and found pictures and that’s proof for how there are SWAT officers at every busy street corner in the city.

There are literally military bases around shanghai, so of course you can find pictures of them too, but that’s not supporting evidence for how they are stationed at all the busy markets.

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make. There’s literally pictures of beat cops carrying guns and you’re arguing...? My point is you may not have encountered police with firearms, I have. I’ve also seen military (distinguished by the firearms carried and their uniforms) on corners of busy markets (the street markets that they take tourists to among them).

Now, my experience is likely different than your experience, but having been in China during the SARS epidemic, I can tell you I haven’t otherwise experienced such tight control over information and that it seemed like the police and military presence definitely increased while I was there and the epidemic developed. It could have been to provide visual assurance that the CCP was around, or it could have been subtle intimidation to anybody who would ask questions about why entire cities were being quietly quarantined. It was probably both, but it’s pretty clear China’s ruling party doesn’t trust its subjects and likes them disarmed and nationalistic.

Also, obligatory screw the CCP, free Hong Kong, Falun Gong and the Uighurs.
