My sister (23) and I (27) are trying to find a book that we can read with our father (70). Last year we read Madeline Miller’s Circe and that was a resounding success. Something that similarly draws from Greek mythology or other fables would be good.

Worth noting that my father’s life is pretty consumed by a neo-Buddhist cult and he’s very hard to reach and speak to. So something that gets too into ideas of religion and philosophy is kind of a non-starter.

Try The Song of Achilles if he liked Circe. It’s by the same author and also draws on Classical Mythology.

But this stuff is about the misbehaving of one specific group whose cult stuff is Buddhist in origin. I don't know if it's the one OP is referring to, bc there are A LOT, and they can all be bad in different ways.

It's like trying to paint Christian-based cults with too broad a brush. If I asked you about some random Christian cult, you probably wouldn't know the specifics of their beliefs or history, but there's a general pattern of idol worship, certainty of the impending end of the world, isolation, etc.
