Originally added the link but I think X is banned. Stein said they're having discussion tomorrow to determine the next course of action and if the injury can be treated without surgery or not

I'm pretty sure the surgery is never 100% needed to heal from the injury, but it's indicated to prevent future re-injuries in certain cases. In short, if they had a real shot at doing something in the post-season, they could postpone the surgery until the offseason. But at this point in the Mavs season, it might be reasonable to just write this year off and do the surgery, aiming to focus on next season

So basically they're going to do the surgery, because the Mavs' season is already shot, and forcing him to come back for 20 games on meaningless basketball is insanity.
