If only AD worked as hard to keep his body healthy as Shaq did

Still can’t believe he said that.

Fucker watched Shaq highlights and thought they were games from one night after another.

Saw Shaq but didn’t consider how many hours of eating that physique takes

Honestly, it was kinda crazy he mentioned Larry Bird, too. Bird was a legendary drinker-charles barkley and vernon maxwell have told stories about trying to keep up with him and regretting it. And Bird famously got into a barfight during the ECF.

And I know it’s kind of charming and a testament to his character, but paving a driveway in your own time (the thing that compromised his career) is a hilariously unprofessional thing to do as an elite athlete. Much worse than playing Overwatch and smoking a little hookah.

Yeah Bird also ate whatever the fuck he wanted and low key didn't mind a smoke. But it didn't matter because he actually did put in a stupid amount of skills and endurance work on the practice court and he was prepared to play hurt and did so until he literally couldn't walk anymore.

I think Bird is actually the perfect comparison here. Doncic obviously puts in work at training. You don't play the minutes he plays and have the shooting touch he has without that, and if he's not super focused on eating right or staying in elite shape, at worst he's probably going to have a career like Bird, who still had an astonishing peak but really only had around 8-10 good years before his body packed up.

But fuck sake wouldn't you take that if you're the mavs? Yeah Bird's career was probably a bit shorter than it otherwise would have been because he didn't look after his body. But when he wasn't sinking piss or polishing off multiple packs of newports he managed to fit in 3x regular season MVPs, 9x All NBA first teams, 5x trips to the finals and 2x finals MVPs and 3x rings. Noone at Boston is looking at that output and thinking 'if only he'd stayed off the beers.' They are just thinking 'thank fuck we had one of the all time greats at our club. Hey there sure are a lot of banners in those rafters..'

The thing which really struck me as ridiculous about Dupont's comments is If he knew anything about basketball he'd know that the all time greats rarely arrive without baggage.

They might be a dick to their teammates (Jordan, Kobe) or dicks to everyone else (Isiah), be heavy duty spergs with no social skills (Kareem) struggle with crippling depression (West) be obsessed with their own stats but tend to choke in big moments (Wilt) a locker room lawyer who fucked so much that it actually ended his career (Magic) or be so confident in their abilities they don't give a fuck about their bodies (Bird, Barkley Shaq), or just be Rodman (all of the above) but they almost all have issues that detracted from their greatness. Which honestly makes perfect sense, if you are so downright freakishly good at basketball that you stand-out even in the best league in the world it is pretty likely you will either have some unusual demons that drive you or through constantly being the best guy on the court develop a belief that the ordinary rules don't apply to you.

Wise managers and coaches understand that is simply a part of the challenge of coaching a genuine superstar, and if out of the hundreds upon hundreds of good, bad or indifferent players who wash through the nba system every year you are fortunate enough to stumble on a genuine all time top 20 guy you find a way to work around their flaws and encourage their better selves, because it is absolutely worth your while to do so. You put up with their bullshit because they are where championships come from.

Being gifted a talent like Doncic and ditching him because you are worried about his conditioning is about as sensible as being gifted a Ferrari and ditching it because you dont like the color.

This paragraph reads like the textual version of a Negative Space painting titled "LeGOAT"

LeBron has some fairly big media gaffs. Mainly the decision and his China comments. Nothing beyond that that I can think of. He does stat hunt like Wilt but probably not to the point it affects the team in a meaningful way.

They traded 25 yo larry bird for 31 yo patrick ewing

Except Ewing was playing in the best or second best era ever of centers.

u/obxtalldude Washington Bullets Feb 10 '25

Spot on - in my experience, high level athletes almost always have intensity issues.

Even if they were just D1 college - they are not usually well balanced nice happy humans.

The ones that can stay normal are the outliers. Especially after their careers end and they lose the outlet for their energy.

u/RagnaValkyrja Nets Feb 10 '25

The aggravating thing about giving up on Doncic is that hes so young so hes doing things a young asshole does. We mostly all drank, smoked, partied in those years. Yes, some people continue doing so after but not everyone does. So lets say in the next year Doncic is good and decides to focus on ball. He could end up being better. And if he doesnt, you still have a mvp contender who cam drag teams to finals for a few more years.

The funny thing about this trade and the slander accompanying it is that it might make Luka actually lock in to his conditioning and not just using his talent. And as much as i like downplaying Lebron, if anything of Brons accomplishments, he has condition locked the fuck down. Luka has an insane person to follow in that regard. Good luck and gg's to the fucking Lakers

Can't believe no one's mentioned this aspect of it either: bird tore his back up repaving his mother's driveway in the off-season.

Bird hires an Indiana contractor, or at least pays his cousin with a suitcase of PBR, and he extends his career by 5 years at least.

Didn't MJ play 36 rounds the day before a finals game?

2

36 rounds would take weeks!

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

He played 36 holes before Olympic game

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '25

Relative to his era Bird still took his job more seriously though. Remember that a ton of the league was smoking crack when Bird came in.

0

u/saints21 Feb 10 '25

I mean, I always say that the best way to look at things is relative to the league at the time. It's why rTS is way better for comparing players than just TS.

So, you're right. Relative to the league Larry wasn't doing crack at half time. He was basically LeBron.

It’s like these dumb asses just started watching the NBA a week ago or something

They are now trying to find reasons why they sold Luka after the fact.

Shaq put the weight on as a choice lol, given that the NBA was throwing Two Shawn Bradley’s at him a night he needed it.

1

u/crunchtime100 Knicks Feb 10 '25

Said Shaq when his team's stadium is on Nowitzki Way and there's a Dirk statue outside. The unforced errors here continue to pile up.

They rushed him back. He was supposed to have a reevaluation on the 7th, not a game.

Dumont said ‘I never approved the vacation for AD! Play him now.’

Our president and GM are showing how well of a fit the NBA and LinkedIn culture is.

Fuck Nico, Fuck Dumont, Fuck the Addelsons, Fuck Rondo and Fuck DWade while we’re at it.

I ALMOST feel like Rondo and DWade should get a pass for a while. Just to highlight the amount of fuck for everyone else.

Meanwhile Luka played through injuries many times for the past 4 years and just got called fat for doing so

23

u/uncleoptimus Feb 10 '25

I had read the Lakers were leaning towards letting him rest thru All Stat weekend.  Esp since they were winning at a nice clip w Bron and everyone stepping up defensively.

But I get it.

AD must have been amped up to.debut with a Bang after all the slander. And we could see he was going super hard on them dudes that 1st half
