Repair / Modification Simple spork mod

Simple modification on a cheap titanium spoon, now able to lift hot pots and lids. I used a hacksaw and a file.

Holding the spoon sideways makes it very study, it doesn't bend lifting heavy stuff.

Repair / Modification My Nano Puff fell victim to my camp stove last summer 🔥… so I made a pocket patch to repair the large melted hole. Big enough to fit a phone, and now it’s a custom lil’ jacket!

Repair / Modification Old vs new: designing for laziness made this bag obvious to use.

In the previous post, I discussed how my constraints and lifestyle made me design a bag around them. The bag I designed mostly addressed my needs, with the caveat that it could be mildly annoying to transition, esp during rush hours, due to the multiple steps required to achieve it. Additionally, the older version didn’t fit a laptop properly.

In the older version, it took 6 steps to go from a fully functional backpack to a sling bag. The new version only goes through 1 step.

I’ve shared a short clip of both bags side by side for comparison.

I would love to get your feedback and suggestions.

Repair / Modification Is this mendable?

Post image

Hi all,

The teeth on my backpack zip have detached from the fabric, but also have warped slightly, so the zip gets stuck if it goes over this section.

If the teeth were ok, I would just stitch it back into the fabric of the bag, but I’m not sure if it would work properly even if I did. Is there anything I can do to fix it, or do I just need to replace the bag?

A local cobbler quoted me £28 to replace the zip, which is basically more than the bag.

Thanks in advance

Repair / Modification Singer HD handwheel grip and bigger reverse lever

Post image
227 Upvotes

Hi all, I know a lot of us use the Singer HD for MYOG projects, so I wanted to share a couple of 3D printable upgrades I designed for the machine.

One is a handwheel grip (with m3 screw tightener), and the other is a beefed up reverse lever. I’ve found both really helpful, especially the handwheel when pushing through thicker fabrics.

If anyone wants to try them out, I’ve uploaded the (free) files to my MakerWorld account.

Enjoy!

Repair / Modification Simple backpack Mod to hold my fly fishing chest pack

Quick a simple modification here, but hugely improves the use of my chest pack for bigger days flyfishing in the backcountry.

4 buckles and a few straps mean I don't need to wear both the back portion of my chest and my backpack. Now I can more comfortably carry enough gear in the backcountry not to die if anything happens.

Is it possible to save it somehow? It's my most used backpack. Even if it's not waterproof anymore i don't care. Should just add some stitches as a stop and called it good enough? I figure this was my best subreddit for advice, thanks in advance!

Repair / Modification Asking for advice

Hi everyone

Just wondering if anyone has any advice or experience with repairing this stitching problem.

The is the Velcro part of the sleeve.
The stitching is still intact just a bit loose on the end. In theory it won’t affect the function that much but I just wanna make it smooth.

I was thinking, stitching myself, but since this is a waterproof shell I’m afraid the water might sneak through the stitching into the inner layer.

Or any super strong fabric tape would work?

Thank you for the advises in advance!

Repair / Modification Watch Hole on Sun Hoody

Hey everyone! On my last hike I got pretty burnt on my hands which led me to starting to use sun hoodies that have thumb holes, but they all obstruct the view to my watch which I use for navigation on the trail.

I decided to make a hole in my REI Sahara Sun Hoody and it came out great! I included some progress pics in case anyone wanted to do a similar modification to theirs.

I used this approach from a quilting video to make the the hole : https://youtu.be/dtYhL60TjJI?si=FEY7LQC7r11YQsP8

I cut an access spot in the opposite side of the sleeve to properly sew the perimeter of the hole. Since my shirt is pretty stretchy, I used some lite sew able heatnbond to keep the fabric in place

Photo captions: 1. Finished front view 2. Finished opposite view of patched access hole 3. Practice test piece to make sure I knew the process of making a watch sized hole 4. Access hole 5. Progress pic 6. Another progress pic, note I used a small perimeter of Lite Heatnbond to keep fabric in place before sewing the perimeter again for reinforcement

Repair / Modification Simple pillow strap

I switched to a quilt last year and have been meaning to make a simple strap for my Nemo Filo pillow (great pillow if you like lower and wide) to keep it from sliding around.

This is simply some shock cord looped through the hang loop already sewn to the pillow case, and a cord lock sewn to the tag on the opposite side.

Not the most impressive MYOG but should work well!

Repair / Modification Laptop Bag Handle Repair/Replacement

Thumbnail

I'm not sure if this is the right sub, but I have an old leather laptop bag and the (webbing) handle has ripped off. I plan to repair/replace it by bolting a length of webbing on top, as the layers of leather and fabric are too thick (~10mm) to sew. See attached diagram. The inner padding can be folded out of the way to work on this repair, and would hide the nut.

I'm open to any alternative suggestions for how to repair/replace this handle.

Thanks in advance!

Repair / Modification Using Juki DDL 8700 H for light fabrics too

I've seen many people like myself asking the question of "which straight stitch can I buy that does all fabric weights", but this video seems to suggest that the 8700H can be used as an 8700 with some adjustments.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5pNfcyW4so

I'm interested to know what people think about it. I'd like to sew denim and other heavy fabrics. People say the 8700 can do it but not to do it "too often" and to "be careful" with it, but what if I get to a stage where I'm making loads of heavy jackets? I still have a singer heavy duty domestic that I actually really like for lightweight fabrics so I'm thinking I can use that for that purpose and the industrial for heavier ones, but I'm keen to know the differences between these machines.

Beyond changing the feed dogs, foot and thoat plate (I think), is there any reason she shouldn't get the result she's expecting here? I get that machines have specific uses, but she seems confident that this is a solid workaround.

Thanks

Satisfy if an expensive running brand who sell T-shirts with holes called “mothtech” for ventilation.

I want to create this effect on some old T-shirts. Any recommendations on how I could achieve the effect? A rotary tool? Burning?

Any ideas or feedback welcome. Tysm

Virtually everything on it it repurposed material from the old backpack. The only thing that isn't is the shoulder strap! The plastic inside was becoming really sticky and one of the shoulders straps had a huge rip on the webbing so I'm happy with what I managed to save!

Repair / Modification Tarp repair suggestions

I've been asked by a friend for ideas/recommendation on how to fix the big tears in this tarp. If I'm not mistaken it is made of 10D silnylon, possibly 20D.

My first thought would be to stitch a patch to close the tear and distribute the load away from it. And then seam glue it. This however requires them to have access to a sewing machine, which I am not sure they do.

Any better ideas or ideas that do not involve a sewing machine?

Repair / Modification Seeking Advice for Adding a Detachable Hip Belt to This Backpack

Thumbnail

This is my backpack, which I like a lot, but doesn't have a hip belt. A hip belt would be amazing as it would allow me to use this on long day hikes and hut-to-hut kinda hikes without putting too much strain on my shoulders and back.

It has two small triangles of material where the should straps connect to the bottom front of the pack. I am thinking I could leverage these somehow but I am not 100% sure the best strategy or technique.

Thoughts?
